PHILADELPHIA - An outraged Mayor Michael Nutter lashed out after three 14-year-olds in his city were killed, calling the shooter "a dog," "idiot" and "a**hole." He also fumed at the dead boys' parents for not adequately supervising their children, saying that "their little butts" should have been in bed.

The mayor's on-camera remarks came after a 30-year-old stepfather opened fire on a car full of kids who came over to fistfight with his three stepsons Tuesday night, according to police, reported NBCPhiladelphia.com. A source told NBC Philadelphia that Axel Barreto confessed to firing shots at the car, killing three teenagers inside. He was arrested Wednesday night in a Bensalem, Pa., motel.

“Seven young people, somewhere between 14 and 16 years old, on a Tuesday night -- a school night -- are out in a car going to somewhere to have a fight with some other teenager. That is completely insane, it is irresponsible," he said. "Parents have to know where their children are and what they are doing.

“The least you can do is know where the hell your kids are, in the daytime, in the nighttime, or at any time during the week or on the weekends. That’s the minimum we should ask and expect from our parents. You want to have kids? Take care of them.”

The shooting resulted from an argument that originated on Facebook, reported NBCPhiladelphia.com. Nutter said he hoped this would serve as an example for other teens to avoid retaliatory acts. “It is not going to work out well for any of you," he said.

Without commenting on the story... I will say:

That is not insane, it happens all the goddamn time, probably every night in hundreds of cities. That doesn't make it right, but come on, this is not new.

NeoGAF's smiling token!
He might be upset but he is right. Parents need to know where there kids are not let them roam the streets freely. Especially not in Philly at night.

I'd say about 40% of parents in this world are fit to be parents.

That's a totally BS, made-up percentage but it feels like it's around there...

Meh, it's true. Control your kids.

Easy to say, not easy in application. Watching my horrible horrible younger siblings show me that, youth with lack of respect, that don't care if you punish or yell at them, really can't be controlled. Makes it even worse if they are still defiant after receiving a spanking.

Not much you can do after that..... short of giving kid up for adoption and then having the blame cast elsewhere.

In most communities people don't shoot 14 year old kids over Facebook bullshit. Don't pretend this is some unpreventable force of nature.

I wasn't talking about the external forces the kids provoked, I am talking about the act of controlling trouble making kids especially in areas which they try to tell you that spankings are abuse and worst case scenario.... even if kids are still defiant butt heads after being spanked.

levious

That throwing stick stunt of yours has boomeranged on us.
as much as you want to agree with what he said, that he said it so soon after these parents lost their children is the issue.

Articles like this are why politicians have to lie all the time.

It is a big harsh, though. I mean, these parents just lost their kids, some compassion would be expected...

How dare he say what everyone else is thinking like that, as a politician he should know to only speak empty bullshit.

When my little brother wants to be a rude little shit, i remind him that i will knock him the fuck out should he keep it up. The lippyness stops soon after.*

*he's 12.

I find it funny how Nutter upsets so many people. Someone tells it like it is and people are outraged. Political correctness leaves many people ill equipped to deal with the truth these days.

It's not like they were lost because of cancer or something. This was imminently preventable. I know dealing with a teenager is probably one of the hardest things anyone can do, but I completely agree with the mayor. A waste of life over something so trivial!

Misleading title, no surprise. Guy's right.
.

thread backfire? Facts is facts. If the little sommbitches are at home studying instead of raising ruckus, they're still alive today. doesn't excuse the step father from going insane on them, but if you don't put yourself in the position by threatening someone else's safety and livelihood, you probably don't get attacked.

...their parents may be somewhat relieved , im sorry to say , plenty of people today do not want their damn kids.

I'll never forget kansas...

This speech should be required viewing for every community dealing with violence.

Parents are responsible for that violence, not only the children, so I don't care that it's "too soon" to place blame on the parents of the dead kids. If you ask me, it's not soon enough.

Will drop pants for Sony.
Harsh but true.

I agree and even though these parents lost their kids maybe this might make them look after whatever kids they have left more closely. My mother was super strict I had to be in the house by 5pm even on a Saturday. I can't feel sorry for a parent who let their kids out at night on a school night doing god's know what.

I mean really, being out isn't a problem. The problem is being out and threatening bodily harm on another human. Nothing wrong with being out until the street lights come on or something.

It's 10'oclock woman, where the fuck is your seed at?

But yea, this guy is known for taking some pretty tough/honest positions on crime in Philly.

Obviously the position doesn't take into account just how horrible family situations are with many inner city black kids

If you read the article you will notice that the kids killed and the killer are hispanic. This also happened in a more suburban area and not the inner city.

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57357923/cops-pa-man-killed-3-teens-over-stepsons-feud/

(CBS/AP) PHILADELPHIA - Police say a Philadelphia man killed three teenagers in an ambush sparked by a feud involving his stepsons.

Investigators say 30-year-old Axel Barreto was arrested at a suburban motel Wednesday night, around the time one of his alleged victims was taken off life support.

Authorities say Barreto fired a dozen or more shots into a car loaded with seven teenagers late Tuesday after the boys arrived for a confrontation with his stepsons. Police say the planned fight stemmed from a dispute at school that then spilled on to Facebook.

Police identified the victims as Joshua Soto and Dante Lugo, both 14, and 16-year-old Javier Orlandi. Soto and Orlandi died late Tuesday.

Another 16-year-old who was behind the wheel was wounded in the neck. Despite being shot in the neck, the 16-year-old driver was able to drive the car to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, reports CBS3 in Philadelphia.

Just saying. Don't jump to conclusions.

I can wait for someone to do a bitchy op-ed in the Inquirer about like last time some people didn't want to hear the truth.

I was allowed to go to only 3 places: home, church and the library. Seriously my childhood kinda sucked.
