Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney for DS

Wait, the new title was announced on April 1?! Maybe a mere coincidence...

Anyway, still no release date. :(
Is it out in Japan already?

Well, there are three GBA games in the series (which represent a full "story arc" within the games), but this DS remake isn't out in Japan for a while.

The name is fine to me. I'm glad they changed the name to something that would actually make sense to English speakers. (Capcom's forums list it by the G-S name still.)

Even if it is a remake of the first GBA game, I don't care. I always wanted to try these games and never thought I'd get the chance to play it in english. I will buy it with the hopes of convincing Capcom to bring more here. I'm glad they are taking a risk like this.

I wonder how the replay value will be, but the sheer novelty and lack of anything else on the market will more than counterbalance that for now.

My only other question is how Capcom will impliment the touchscreen in this version?

I guess we will find out later this year.

Replay value is nil, but the story's long.

As for the touchscreen, well, go read a preview and you'll see.

Maybe GAF stands for Gaming Advertisers Forum, because it seems like we've got some real marketing whiz-kids running amok in this thread.

"Gyakuten Saiban" has infinitely less mass appeal than Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. Makes complete sense to at least name it something in English, and related to the game's content.

I'm not sure if Nintendo's got a "Player's Choice" on their hands here but I welcome the fresh ideas

Two ideas:

1) Maybe some type of gavel-stylus to go with the theme and all, much like Namco and their Pac Pix (Spelling?) game.

2) Perhaps use the mic of the DS in the coutroom scenes. If you want to object or something, you can say it into the mic.

Sure, the last one may make you look kind of insane playing in public, but I'm just tossing out ideas off the top of my head.

I still think of "pet detective" when I see the title...

It sounds like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, or something. :p And what kid is going to want to play a game with "attorney" in the title? That's only a notch below "Accountant" on the "things kids never, ever want to associate themselves with" list.

Some people are too far out of touch with reality for their own good. Why not something simple like Courtroom Chaos or Disorder in the Court or Feel the Verdict: XY/XX or whatever? Surely there's a thousand better names they could've gone with than the one they chose. :p

sorry John beat me too it... =(

I haven't read all of this thread, but I'm gonna go out on a limb here and call shame on you all for not pointing out how awesome a Lionel Hutz lawyer game would be. I rest my case. Case closed.

It would be a great use of the Simpsons franchise. It better come with a free smoking chimp!

Too bad that dumb bitch had to ruin all. >:(

Would "Penal System: Touch!" have been too over the top?

heh... NICE. That reminds me of the old Brisco County Jr. quote...

Pete Hutter: I happen to be an expert in "penal lodging'...
Whip Morgan: HEY! I'm not into that!
Pete Hutter: I was referring to the jail cell...

This and Advance Wars are the two DS games I'm looking forward to most. I agree on the bad name, though.

Capcom should give out refrigerator magnets as swag to advertise this game. Nothing says lawyer like quick access to a 24 hour phone number for your sueage needs. :D

So...how does this play? From the images it just looks like some text adventure with a dash of Law and Order and shitty Japanese anime humour thrown in. Like, how much "interaction" do you have with the game... how deep is the gameplay?

BTW, on Capcom and game names - I heard the story from an ex-Capcom employee how they came up with the name for "Tech Romancer".

They were throwing names for the US version around and nobody liked any of the names. He thought he came up with some good ones but everyone crapped on his ideas too. So he got fed up after a while and came up with a Top 10 worst titles for this game and then read them off. The very last one on the list was "Tech Romancer". The rest is history.

Maybe someone should e-mail Atsushi Inaba and have him fire a quick e-mail to Capcom USA saying he hates the name and they should change it. :) Mention the suggested titles in this thread.

That doesn't make sense. If they were reading off a top ten WORST LIST they would've...

OH HEY LOOK IT'S A POKUTE!

Yeah, except all the suggested titles in this thread suck dick compared to the one Capcom has. Seriously, this is a damn good title. So screw all y'all!

Ok, first off, the humor is not "shitty", so go suck an egg!

Second off, the game has "detective" bits and "courtroom" bits. The "detective" sections (no English screenshots of these yet) are basically like Sierra adventures; you move a pointer around to examine stuff, pick up items, and select conversation choices when talking to people. In the "courtroom" bits you read testimony, choose when to object (and what evidence to present as proof of your objection), and sometimes also pick the conversation choice when Phoenix is trying to convince the judge of something.

The idea is to present evidence that contradicts the testimony of the prosecutor's witnesses. Keep it up and the plot will work such that Phoenix will not only exonerate his client, but usually also ferret out the real criminal among the prosecutor's witnesses.

If you "screw up" too many times in the courtroom bits, the game ends, so you'll want to save the game before spouting off objections willy-nilly.

So it's pretty interactive, yes.

No seriously, it must be a cultural thing because Japanese anime humour is truly awful. I knew right away this title contained that when I saw that stupid as shit "RIVER OF TEARS" in that one image, so don't bother preaching to me about it.

They did something like that for that CSI game which was horrible. I hope it's a little more complicated and contains a little less hand-holding. So it sounds like a text adventure+CSI, so I just hope they end up doing it right. I'll keep an eye on it.

I liked the CSI games :lol but I also played them after I was a fan of Gyakuten. Gyakuten is a much easier game than CSI and has (imo) a much more interesting plot, so there's that going for it.

And one river of tears turns you off an entire game? I hear 50 Cent's got a game coming -- maybe that's more up your alley! Ooooohhh!

The courtroom bits are AWESOME and contain some of the most original, addicting, fun gameplay that I've seen on a handheld.

The adventure parts are a little slowish and not as hot, though admittedly it's hard to stand up to the courtroom scenes.

Though I only played III so I don't have that much experience with the series. But the courtroom stuff is so GOOD I'd easily recommend it to anyone.

How can a game be easier than CSI? And that's not a "plus", that's a negative. I want a challenge, no hand-holding simplicity. And CSI was already so absurdly easy that it was a huge disappointment. :|

I think it's clear we have different priorities :P

No, shite anime humour turns me off to entire games. Big difference.

Definetly a bad name, but the courtroom scenes look absolutely great. I haven't seen much regarding the adventuring sequences but the courtroom portions should be able to support the game regardless of the adventure portinos.

I think it's clear that you're just a playa hatah! :lol

Seriously, just keep an eye on the game as it gets more coverage over E3/the summer. It's quite good!

Hmm, I would call this game "Courtroom Chaos"... kinda like the Japanese name, better than Phoenix Wright:Ace Attorney :P I'm actually fairly interested in this game, though I don't have much interest in law (especially not Japanese law). I hear it's got a good story.
