Considering all things Nintendo, this is pretty normal.

Major gameplay elements were removed and story alterations had to be made according to a previous interview. We haven't got a clear description of what was altered but there was probably a lot of gamepad functionality that got gutted considering how the UI and menus turned out. The beasts also felt like they were designed with having access to the gamepad for interacting with them.
