Easily my favorite show this season. I am glad we finally got to see Kazama play. I was wondering just how good he would be, and I was not disappointed. Now I wonder what will become of Peco and Smile, and the team itself since they're two stars lost.

I cannot stress how much I love the music. Is the OP out yet?

Full OP should be out June 4.

That's being generous. Parts of the last few episodes looked cheap, parts of this episode looked awful. They still delivered where it counts though, that dragon.

Yeah, maybe I was being generous.

It's hard for me to differentiate between what's the intended style of the series and what's cutting corners on the animation front. Regardless, the fight between Kong and Kazama is definitely a highlight of the series for me.

Episode 5

I think this is the first time they did a recap at the beginning and even had some flashbacks to the previous episode. Oh well, at least they weren't too long, but still gotta fill some time when you are running behind on schedule. Akuma's outburst was pretty well done.

Ping Pong 5

I just want everyone to be happy and play ping pong for fun.

Is that too much to ask? :(

As much as he's a dick I actually pity Peco. He seems like one of those high school star jocks who couldn't make the pros and see 20 years later as an old fat slob. When you see him, in your mind, you know he kind of deserves it, but you can't help but pity him as well. Since he was so naturally talented in the beginning, once he faces defeat, he unravels so quickly and you see how maladjusted and mentally weak he really was. Same for Akuma , only he had no talent.

Dang, Smile went in hard.
I feel like I missed something, he was just losing to China, and now this.

Poor Akuma and Peco.

What, that ugly crayon dragon was hideous.. unnecessary addition too because making Kazama's sheer of domination feel so filmsy, its way dumbed down compared to the manga approach with just few effective and elegant page.

Its failure attempt than the robot hero scene in eps 2 IMO, with how badly the scene drawn and not as effective it used as metaphorical device(try to portray Kazama as dominating presence, showing cartoonish dragon in cue, lol)

If you are talking about Smile losing to Wenge. He gave up once he pitied him. By no means did Kong actually beat Smile in terms of skill.

Anyway, I really enjoyed the character development that happened in episode 5. I already enjoyed this show, but this episode is the one that has gotten me to love it

5 - Where Did I Go Wrong

Peco got pretty hot, if he could ditch the smoking then would be near Wenge tier for me. Still the message behind this episode was pretty powerful though unfortunate for a few characters. Best episode yet.

Wenge tearing up on the train scene :(

So how long is it normally until the blurays come out? I want to watch the show as it was planned to look, but if it's going to take forever I might watch it as it airs.

I'm sure they will. What I want more is for it to get a Blu-Ray release in North America, but it's pretty doubtful.

Yeah with this being a sports show and made by Yuasa it's probably gonna end up like Tatami Galaxy. Picked up for streaming by Funi but no BD/DVD release

Yeah, there seems to be a jump. But I also think maybe the focal point of that change is Smile watching Kazama play and seeing how just wide the gap is. When you see that the opponent out there is just so way ahead of your fellow players, maybe it is his kindness to just put them down earlier.

Episode 5

Seeing the mechanisms and support structures behind Kaio is pretty interesting. It's a completely different environment for the team and that creates completely different type of people. Sakuma's downfall is a direct result of that system, and there's really nothing he could have done about it. His personality didn't allow himself to admit what seemed obvious to everyone else. The visual allusion to eyesight is pretty on point, because it's precisely that he couldn't "see" what was there. The pacing and direction is really pretty fantastic, since episodes just go by really quick.

Peco didn't show much emotion in the episode, but watching Akuma being beat like that while he was being done to the same previously in the competition must have compounded his helplessness tenfold. And isn't that the worst thing about Smile's kindness? Having essentially your best bud leading you on for so long without knowing it then when you realize it he's already too far away.

Welp, pack it up.

Shounen is done.

Matsumoto called it out on the hard work bullshit.

Loving how Wenge is turning out to be one of the most humanized characters of the show, standing somewhere inbetween Smile's sheer mechanicalness and his rare moments of compassion, seemingly having a more complex nature than most of the characters shown so far. Perhaps he heralds still greater moments for the other characters, but it will be hard to beat him
gently accepting his inevitable loss against Kazama with even a smile, his remembrances of his mother and his leaving, or even of his first effort to speak japanese.
Loving everything about this show, but Wenge has quickly become my favorite part of it.

Skimmed through some of the Manga, I think the anime added in a ton of great characterization.

Could not have said it better myself. He's quickly become a favorite amongst a ton of great characters.

Great episode. Great show, so far it's the best this season has to offer.

Don't sleep on Haikyuu though, a lot more conventional, but the execution is so good it's impossible not to admire it.

Baby Steps is criminally underrated.

Damn, Smile ending careers left and right.

Yeah it irked me too. Seems like Smile had a 180° shift in his attitude to playing during timeskip. And yet there was little to suggest such a change at the end of previous episode. Maybe they will expand on it later.

Yeah, I was actually going to comment on that. There's definetenly an idea that, no matter who you are, as long as you work as hard you can you will do well. Not here though. Smile is just a Table Tennis playing god and if you lack natural talent he will end you.

And most of those get thrown into the gutter when it turns out our plucky underdog has one thing he does really well.

Or like, Hinata, who is a volleyball savant, but inexperienced and short.

Is he even really technically accomplished as a volleyball player? I thought he rode almost entirely on his athleticism.

He jumps good. Apparently that's enough to not be shite at volleyball.

I think one of the great things about the scene at the end of the match is how
after Akuma goes through the standard sort of "why can't I beat you" rant, Smile just flat-out basically says "because you're not that great at ping pong"
. Like Haly said, a great subversion of what you might expect to hear in any other similar series.
