I'm only on the 3rd ep, but the OP is great. Also, I really enjoy the rough animation. It gives way more personality than most clean animations to me, regardless if its a cut corner or artistic choice.

You know DeAndre Jordan actually got 10m per year in NBA. What am I supposed to be agreeing here?

That height doesn't matter as much as people think it does? Either way, if height doesn't matter that much, then Hinata has no significant disadvantages. If it does matter a lot, then Hinata has some sort of latent talent compensating for it.

Episode 6

I think this is the first episode that deviated a lot from the source material and the one with the most original content. At least it's fun to see what new things Yuasa wanted to add to the story although in a lot of the cases, I don't quite see the point except for all the focus on Wenge. This episode also reminded me, does Peco have his own theme for playing? Kazama and Smile have distinct ones, I think Wenge has one as well, but not sure about Peco yet.

why is this show so good? omfg

The parts with Wen-Ge were really good and he's just a really likable player. The subs for the Chinese parts were kinda off, but whatever. Was nice to see Wen-Ge's mom too.

Peco and Sakuma's talk was nice and it's good to see Peco wanting to get back into the game. How many episodes is this going to be again? 11 or 12?

11 episodes

Ping Pong The Animation Episode 6:

Sadly this was rather the dullard of an episode; I get what they were trying to accomplish but most of the character building felt like mere wheel spinning as new insights were lacking. Also, that karaoke segment is just pure cheese, spoiled and rotten cheese.
Things picked up a lot once we got to the altercation with Akuma and Peco, and the attempted suicide, strange to say but that kicked the characterization up several notches.
Also, those new shows are among the ugliest I have ever seen and I would not wish them on my worst enemy.

Yeah this episode took a step down on the pacing is pretty grim overall, but if you're invested in the characters it's still an engrossing episode. My favourite moment is probably Ota reading the ping pong book.

I really liked the episode. Nice to see Akuma back on his feet after the end of 5 and the whole Wenge stuff.

Man, the OST for this is pretty good too.

it's better that Peco's gonna gear back up to give it another shot because there's only so much they could do if he continued to get waste away.

robot sound effects were cool too.

Episode 7

Good episode. I'm starting to like more of Yuasa's little changes like Kazama and his cousin's story, and Peco's clones, although the Butterfly Joe aspect, I'm not a fan of what he did with it. The OST really need to come out already, so good.

Ping Pong The Animation Episode 7:

Now this is more like it, this is an episode that is firing on all cylinders and is showing me why it is maybe the best show of this season.

After 1-5, 6-7's pacing is much more slower, almost feels unnatural for the series.

But it's all good, still a great and engrossing episode, great juggling of all the characters too. I wonder if it'll go back to turbo speed again or it'll just be like this till the end.

Seeing more of the backstory between Kazama and his cousin really brings home how good the characterization is.

Also, that line where he says, there are no heroes. Awesome foreshadowing. Understandable why he's interested in Smile. They're similar but also fundamentally different. One has something to believe in after all.

Old post but rewatching some of the episodes, I think it's the music that plays in Episode 1 when he plays the random no-name at the beginning, and in Episode 7 when he's running up steps. It's a very up-beat, childlike tune that seems kind of fitting for him lol.

oh right I hear the track, could be although I wonder if he will get something new or different for when he starts playing seriously in the tournament

lol such quality

So I'm currently absolutely loving both this and Haikyuu, and now I would love to see more awesome sports anime. I'm pretty sure I haven't seen any, the closest thing I can consider that I really liked was Air Gear. Anyone have any good suggestions? Bonus points if it is something subtitled on Netflix (US)

Baby Step also from this season.

Episode 6-7

Finally caught up, what a ride. The transition into the second half of the story is pretty obvious, with a shift in tone and focus. The narrative power is still so strong though. It's really impressive how they can let the mentality of the individual characters set the mood and just unload with montages which visually deconstruct the psychology and relationships in a really elegant way. The emotions just feel so raw, so real, it's hard to not get drawn into the world these people inhabit, even though it is ultimately a self-destructive world fueled by fear, ego, pride, and hate. This really is the anti-shounen sports show.

Episode 8

Glad productions held up for this episode and hopefully for the rest of the tournament cause the matches are pretty hype. The whole deal with mats and shoes are pretty funny especially when it reminds me about how I would obsess about best equipments and gear before picking up some sports when I was a kid.

Ping Pong The Animation Episode 8:

I find it very amusing that for all of the unique style and differing approaching to things this series takes, it can never escape the fact that it is a sports anime and is still using a lot of tropes and motifs that sports anime have. Indeed we have a local tournament which is a set up for a national tournament, which is a storyline that is running in the much more shonen Ace No Diamond. Indeed there is also still quite a lot of detailed analysis about every single stroke being viewed by all the major players with added commentary, another sports staple. I suppose the point here is no matter how much Ping Pong tries to rebel it is still a part of the system.

Soooo hype. Kazama vs Hoshino will be amazing.

Edit: I hope Kong wins the team tournament or something, he needs a happy ending. :(

Wenge had so much swag, but not enough talent :(

Episode 8

That was pretty depressing to watch. I guess the entire point of the story is that there really isn't any joy in watching people win when you know that someone succeeding also means someone else's dreams and ambitions being crushed. In a sense I think the show increasingly validates Tsukimoto's original mentality where he wasn't really hungry for victory because he knew there were others hungrier than him who possibly needed it more. The music this week was off the charts too. Sooooo good.

Best episode.

And it really is funny how much better this show is than every other anime currently running.

The only other show I am following is Captain Earth and I will be the first to admit that show is generic mecha anime personified.

Mushishi is also pretty great. It's good enough that I can't decide whether I like Ping Pong or Mushishi better.

It's really amazing how great Yuasa can be when he gets good source material. Despite the animation being limited in some segments, the match between Peco and Wenge was incredible. Can't wait for the next episode!
