Pirates or Centuries?

I'm putting myself on a bit of a budget this christmas so i actually have some money to buy presents for other people, so I'm not going to buy heaps of games until the new year. I've already got a few Gamecube and GBA games I'll be buying this holiday season, so that limits what I'm getting for the PC.

I will be getting both Sid Meier's Pirates! and Rome: Total War (eventually), it's simply a question of which to get first... what's the better game?

Rome with the totalrealism mod is top notch, Pirates, although good is really only a graphical update to the original game.

rome is where it is at. trust me on it.

well i haven't played the original pirates anyway, so it'll be a completely fresh experience for me. despite that, it looks like rome is the one to go with... unless someone else thinks otherwise.

and totalrealism mod?

Biff presents Why you should get Rome: Sparta VS Thrace (56K forgive me)

My Spartans wait for the approaching Thracian army.

Thrace learns numbers don't matter when you have Spartans.

Pirates! is definately more of a laid-back, have fun kinda game. Rome TW is magnificent in presentation, polish and scope. It does, however, require more thought and activity in that it's, well, a strategic RTS game. I'd go with that first, unless you really want a more 'relaxing' game. Pirates! doesn't really require alot of mental activity, so to speak, beyond learning the mini games.

Edit; Biff, that Total realism mod looks pretty solid, thanks for the tip.
