Is Dark Souls 1 the best game this century? Ever?

Any parry tips? I’m not exactly new to the genre. But I’m at a certain leader in a camp EARLY on that’s got my ass stumped. Can’t recall his name. He’s not a “boss”. Just some dumb camp leader I’m guessing.

No idea what to do other than attempt after attempt
I think parry timing is around 200ms before hit does damage to you.

I own both. Definitely can’t say I’ve beaten either. I know. Shameful. Elden ring kinda just feels like open world DS. And that’s fine. Love its atmosphere and such too. But I’m just obsessed with DS actual world is all. Far far more than other souls games.

I admit I LOVE DS2 btw. Sorry
It‘s not just open world DS. Open world overthrew the entire concept of DS, after finishing ER two days ago I wouldn‘t compare them much tbh.

But ott, I‘d say DS1 is a mighy fine game. Don‘t know if it‘s the best of them all, as such a concept doesn‘t existnin my head, but from what I played it‘s the best game the studio has ever created and it‘s among many many other great games a few grades better than the average games and I don‘t mind it being in top games of all times lists.

Dark souls. Bought the game on launch of Xbox 360. 2011.

Booted it up. Gave it a few minutes. Shelved it. Was too intimidated

Fast forward to the remaster in 2018. That’s when the love affair began.

Between Prepare to die on pc, DSR on PC, Xbox, PS and Switch, I’ve logged maybe 300 hours

I’ve never finished NG+. I’ve not done all story lines. Not close. I’m still discovering new things.

The world and NPC’s and how interconnected it is, is still unmatched in my opinion. It’s open world but… NOT… but kinda. And it’s perfect.

Anyone like me? Didn’t give the game a chance when it came out and now it’s a GOAT contender? Nothing more satisfying for me than starting a fresh build and reaching Firelink Shrine for the first time. The music. Atmosphere.
Nah it's The Last of Us part 2.

Represent.

Represent(ative) of bad opinions
It's up there for sure, with the likes of Blooborne, Elden Ring and TW3, hard to pick one.

This is a bannable post lmao
Bloodborne, the most overrated game of all time.

Elden Ring, arguably the ugliest AAA game ever made. Open World slop

Almost had the holy trinity of From suckage there :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Now days on a fresh start, I can run through and hardly die. Am I “good”? Probably not. But I know the mechanics and what to do in order to not struggle. I’ll die in Mario platforms too. But now I’ve played Mario enough to know its mechanics as well. Same principle.

Dark souls isn’t a hard game. I do Not say that as some “boast”. I’m shit at games in general probably
Dark Souls is a hard game, it's just a hard game you're accustomed to playing and developed a skill for. I guarantee you're probably at least in the top 20% of gamers if you can beat dark souls without breaking a sweat.

Grab the average gamer, some fifa or Madden player, throw him into dark souls and watch him struggle. I have multiple Marvel Rivals accounts and I reached top 3% in all of them but I didn't do that instantly when I first played the game, it took developing a skill to do it. Now I can start a new account with a character I don't play like say Hela and can reach celestial rank before my account is even level 20. I couldn't do that when the game first came out, I had to get good to doit. Throw the average player into a fresh Hela account and watch them never reach celestial, it is what it is.

Depends on what break a sweat is. Will I die in DS? Absolutely lol 😂

But if I intentionally get super OP. Use summons for every remotely hard boss. I could breeze the game with few deaths. How many? Not sure. Maybe under 40 if I had to keep count. But really no idea.

That’s using every available mechanic to make myself super OP though and using summons whenever possible

What’s crazy is I’ve NEVER had issues with “archers of Anor Londo” and that’s a huge deal to many. Maybe luck? I just run and slash the one and it’s done. lol

It’s the best game since Metal Gear Solid 3, sure.

I love that world. It’s sort of the ultimate fantasy adventure game in my mind. Maybe a darker version of the experience I always wanted Zelda to be, before I’d end up jerking off in a water temple.

To me also yes. Something about the murky lonely atmosphere in it is unmatched, especially the OG version (non-remastered/demastered).
Yep. Prepare to die is one I’ve racked up 100 hours in. I enjoy the remaster as well.

But it’s definitely the atmosphere and loneliness and hopelessness and it’s brilliant

Repeating: Not even the best Fromsoft game. Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne both beat it clean. I can see an argument for Elden Ring being better.

Dark Souls' problems are as obvious as they are well-known - the second half of the game is a mess.

1) New Londo's ghosts are invulnerable unless you divine (or look up) the solution.
2) The Four Kings fog door run is godawful long.
3) The dragon asses in Lost Izalith are just a pain (and I played the improved version of the game with less aggro)
4) Bed of Chaos is a poorly designed boss with egregious hitboxes.
5) Tomb of the Giants effectively requires the player to build into being able to generate a light source or follow a questline to a specific end.

Off the top of my head.

1) the ghost ordeal was intentional. It’s why they have “transient curses” you can take to make them killable
2) 4 kings fog door ain’t that bad. I use the bonfire in the Darkroot garden or whatever that comes out at the front castle door by the valley of the drakes
3) legit never been attacked by the dragons in that area. Not once. Either version of the game
4) bed of chaos sucks. But hit boxes? It’s a one hit kill ordeal in 3 separate spots. Nothing to “fight”.
5) again. Intentional. It’s why they have the sunlight maggot hat and skull lantern

The first half, arguably.

But the game is too big and they ran out of budget.

Undead Burgh is the greatest video game zone ever.

Majula has my heart. ❤️ it’s truly heartbreakingly beautiful 🤩

Game is so underrated. I love DS2

Wild how it’s the black sheep to me.
ds2 is the best souls game. better than er for me too.
At least the OG one. SOTFS and DLC can be very "assy" like "haha we got you with that enemy gang bang around the corner!". Especially the dlc.

so while I personally like ds2 probably the most (maybe), dark souls 1 is still the best game of the century for me. Or at least most influential. It literally changed gaming after 2011. I couldn't get into anything else for months.

that varies depending on what games you enjoy

Souls types are both critically acclaimed and very popular with core gamers including on GAF but not a type of game I enjoy myself so it wouldn’t even make my own top games lists either this century or ever

It might not be “the” best game ever…but if it’s a game you love and enjoy and it’s “your” best game ever, then that’s all that matters … play what you enjoy

(Unless it’s licensed vaporware then I will judge a bit lol)

Fantastic game, obviously.
I prefer Dark Souls 3 though.
That's my favourite Dark Souls, even with the poise issues etc. I have probably finished it 7-8 times.

It is up there for me even if I'm not a hardcore Souls guy. It might have the best magical vibe out of maybe all games I've played. From the Taurus Demon jumping down, Firelink Shrine, getting attacked by a giant unbeatable mushroom, taking and elevator and realising how interconnected everything is.. and so forth. There are few gaming experiences that compare for me that I have had as an adult, where I was thrown into something that felt so original and mesmerizing. I wish gaming would strive for uniqueness more, but I suppose that involves investor risk taking..

It is a hard game. The first time we played it we knew it was hard. You've just played the crap out of it and are good at it now.

Silly to say otherwise.

I’d pay lots of cash to play demon souls. Never have. And no… not buying the PS3 version lol

Crystal lizards I never mess with as they give twinkling titanite. I never use it
Don't let the negativity surrounding the Demon Souls Remake dissuade you from getting a ps5 and that game. Even if the atmosphere isn't quite the same it's still great and holy moly it looks and feels so good.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Darksiders II, and Kingdoms of Amalur edge it out for me as far as action-RPG hybrids with a connected map. Their combat, loot, and builds are just more entertaining.

Kingdoms of Amular? Isn't it a single player mmo by design which means a lack of interesting level design? Lots of repetition etc?

Dark Souls on the other hand has some of the best level design in gaming history (well, the first 2/3rds anyway)

It was amazing experiencing the world before everything was figured out and sharing bits with the community as you found a new item, or a new area or covenant. The game had a sense of place and 'alive' to it, with all the ghosts of other players appearing here and there as you delved deeper into the abyss. The path from Firelink down to blighttown and effectively getting stuck down there without hope for a while felt like a nightmare, the harsh poison, the firelink keeper getting offed essentially leaving you stuck in that shit hole. The game felt like a real journey of self discipline to me, and the satisfaction of progress with rewards felt great. I can reel off so many things that made me think 'wow' during that first playthrough, like discovering anor londo for the first time, or getting the plague from those fucking frogs and having no idea how to get rid of it, dying in 1-2 hits until you figured it out...

I don't think it's the best game ever, but it is easily in the top 10, without question.

For games to marry atmosphere, mechanics, gameplay and lore together so perfectly is extremely rare. I never quite felt the magic again with the subsequent games, although I do love them as a whole.

I played DS 1-3 and while I like them I am def not thinking them as GOAT games. They give me a little anxiety. I fired up 1 and 3 recently and was breezing through them maybe I should give another shot.

Obviously depends on what types of games you like. It’s in my top 10 BUT I’m primarily a fighting game player. So for me, Street Fighter 3 comes before all else.

I know. But I REALLY want to play the true OG. Warts and all. Jank and all. Not some gorgeous reimagined version

Only fighting game that EVER called to me was 90’s Mortal Kombat and Tekken 3 PS1. Never really clicked with the good ole 1v1 fighting (oh and old school virtua fighter)
