Is Dark Souls 1 the best game this century? Ever?

Not to scare you off, but the campaign is a 100 mission tutorial and it's not always obvious who you need to talk to in order to progress. there is an actual story and for what itis, it's actually pretty good. There is a small pocket of people who play online. If you need help finding folks to play with let me know, I can point you in adirection
I don't even know anything about the game beyond a few sentences I read online. maybe I'll check out a video first lol. rad to hear it still has an active online community.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Darksiders II, and Kingdoms of Amalur edge it out for me as far as action-RPG hybrids with a connected map. Their combat, loot, and builds are just more entertaining.

Nothing wrong with being gay. I support you my guy. Always.

You put Amalur up there with NG, Darksiders, and Dark Souls? Just asking cause I've never played it.
KoA excels in the adventure aspect and has some satisfying combat with some really unique skills that are situational and really fun to use. Just don't use the default sword past the tutorial as its move set sucks.

I feel like a sleezy clown
I’ve never beaten NG+ (apparently it has 7 NG+ btw)
Not completed remotely all NPC’s storyline
Not entered all covenants
Not completed all covenants

I feel like a newb after 300+ hours in total still

And THAT is why this game is so magical

Dark Souls III is the better game in every way.
Let me tell you something, folks, I’m sick and tired—absolutely fed up—of hearing these so-called "gamers" go on and on about how Dark Souls 3 is better than the first two. It’s beyond wild, okay? The original Dark Souls? A masterpiece, tremendous, nobody did it better. Dark Souls 2? Fantastic, a total winner, people loved it. And now you’ve got these elitists saying 3 is the greatest thing since sliced bread? Give me a break! I’ve played ‘em all, believe me, and I know quality when I see it—nobody knows gaming like I do. This obsession with 3? It’s nonsense, pure and simple, and I’m not gonna sit here and take it anymore!

I absolutely love it. The atmosphere is the best of any modern From game. Come at me.

(I will accept Demons Souls as the other best atmosphere)

Dark Souls III is the better game in every way.
Not in responsiveness as a kick takes forever to execute. Not in level design as Farron Keep's swamp almost makes people miss Blighttown. Not in covenants as the rewards are trash tier. Not in gear upgrades as more resource expenditures result in insignificant increases and armor isn't even upgradeable. The few issues in Dark Souls such as speed and lighting can be resolved with mods but DS3's issues are beyond fixing.

Don't know about best game of the century, but it's a godamm amazing game that's for sure. Genius gameplay loop, weird worldbuilding and extremely rewarding.

What time is it?
I float between Dark Souls (level design), Demon's Souls (kicked off the formula, Tower of Latria being an all-timer), and Bloodborne (favorite setting and most consistent throughout the runtime) as being my favorites. I wouldn't argue against any of those three...or well any of them for being someone's favorite. I do think those three have a lot less to nitpick than DS2 (this has been endlessly picked apart), DS3 (feels like a greatest hits album) or Elden Ring (too many issues to list).

For me, yes, still the best in term of gameplay loop, perfect for beginner and casual play. Still replayed DS1 more than other soulsborne.

It's on the short list with the other all-time greats. Incredible interconnected world. Huge number of memorable moments. Highly replayable. One of the most influential games ever, spawning a new genre and hundreds of pretenders that rarely ever approach its level. And it's influential not because it's an easy cash-grab formula, but because it is a zenith of game design.

The original Dark Souls up until and including Anor Londo (and its secret area) is one of the best games ever made. It's incredible how well the game flows.

I have a lot of love for the original, so I see where you're coming from OP.

As others have said, the 2nd half is not as refined as the 1st by quite a margin. This is evident in me having about 1000 hours across PS3 and PC but only having got to the last boss a handful of times. There's an excellent amount of freedom in the early game thanks to the incredible map design. You can do a surprising amount without having to ring the two bells.

DS was also the most fair in its design (haven't played BB). Punishing, but fair. Some of this has been lost in sequels where everything is a reaction to what came before to try and keep the difficulty up. ER is very cheap at times and it's because they keep finding new ways to punish experienced players. Dark Souls 1 was only interested in refining things from Demon's Souls, and they did that excellently.

For me definitely the best game of all time.

The atmosphere, world, level design, NPCs, storytelling, choice/consequences impact (no respec I love that), variety and uniqueness of weapons (without being flashy), slow and methodic combat...

This game clicked all the buttons for me. It actually made me love stuff I didn't think I'd like.
Each time I go back to it, even after several years, it's still magical each time.
Each you go back to Firelink and the music starts... I can't describe that feeling.

Dark Souls is a representation of "Simple is beautiful" which is something I love.

It's my number 1 and closely followed by Hollow Knight (which is the game that resemble the most Dark Souls for me).

Most influential of the past few gens, probably. If the last half of the game was properly finished and wasn't so weak, it could be in talks for GOAT, but as it stands, the experience falls apart towards the end.

SO TRUE !

I honestly hate how the "Souls game are challenging" philosophy has overcome the franchise and each new entry finds new ways to obliterate the player. As you said, it culminates in ER which, in my opinion, as some of the worst, most frustrating and annoying boss fights in the franchise.

I always saw Demon's Souls as a beta version of Dark Souls.
Dark Souls perfected the formula of Demon's Souls while still keeping the same feeling.

It’s probably the most influential but best? Nah. I prefer DS3 over DS1. Better weapons and the late game content isn’t jank.

Super Mario Bros. Is still far and away the best gigo game ever created, and if all tone.

I LOVED DS1, but I’d say Ds 3 ER weee better games just from FROM.

It’s the most influential game of the 2010s, bar absolutely none. Souls mechanics were shoehorned in pretty much anything that wasn’t open world, and now we even have open-world Souls.
If you ask me, it’s the best game in its series, and definitely in the top 5 games released since the 7th gen.

No game will ever have this crown from everyone. Any thread reference any game will have its naysayers. The fact that this game gets this kind of thread every once in a while is pretty telling.

Let me tell you, folks, Dark Souls 2 is fantastic, absolutely fantastic, and totally underrated—believe me. People say, "Oh, it’s not as good as the others," but they’re wrong, so wrong. It’s got the best world design—huge, beautiful, tremendous—Majula alone is like Mar-a-Lago of video games. The challenge? Unbelievable. It’s tough, but fair, like negotiating a great deal. And the DLCs? Top-notch, the best. Nobody talks about it enough, but I’m here to say it: Dark Souls 2 is a winner, a total gem, and I know gems, folks!

Lol, you sound like Trump. Not agree, couldn't finish it, tried it a lot of times. I thought it was a poor game, almost everything felt off. Didn't play the DLC's because it lost my interest before I even started them.

I’d say Skyrim, The Witcher 3, DeS/DaS and TOTK are the best games of the century so far and it’s pointless trying to pick between them.

We'll have to agree to disagree there. I've been a Soulsborne fan since DeS on the PS3 and I feel DSIII is the better of the Souls trilogy.
