Did you ever check out the porn games in MAME? If so, you probably realized that the mahjong games are, well, mahjong, and that 99% of the rest of them are utter bullshit. The Gals Panic series, however, combined mild porn with actual fun gameplay and as such sticks out in the MAME collection of porn. The gameplay is pretty much Qix (or rather Qix II) straight up without much in the way of new ideas, sure, but still fun.

Unfortunately, the designers at Kaneko made the choice to make GP a credit-munching series. It's literally impossible, or at least takes an ungodly amount of skill, to survive for longer than a few minutes in Kaneko's version of the games.

This is where homebrew devs (I'm guessing?) D5 come in with their PC adaptation "Gal PaniX". It does GP better than the original devs ever did. The artwork is much better, whereas Kaneko's was mediocre at best. The music also rocks, as does the presentation with a decent amount of game modes (3) and many galleries (etc) to unlock by playing well. Best of all, though -- the game is actually playable. You have a very fair shot at making it not only through a few minutes, but a full run through the game.

So, to summarize:

Gals Panic == Boobies + Qix + fun + impossible + annoying
GalPaniX == Boobies + Qix + fun - impossible - annoying

And as a side note, I'm gonna point out that GalPaniX is nothing less than an orgy of references for shooter fans to pick up on. It's kind of an odd choice, but seeing as how Kaneko steered GP towards including shooter elements in Gals Panic 4 and up, I guess D5 just figured they'd go all out. The references are very clear tributes, and I've had a lot of fun spotting stuff from Gradius, R-Type, Battle Garegga, Cave games, Psyvariar, 194X, and many others I'm too tired to remember right now.

So yeah. It's actually a pretty fun puzzler, even if you're not in it for the cartoon panty shots, too.

The D5 guys also made a top-down run n' gun game, like Shock Troopers or Mercs, but it isn't finished yet. It has no music and needs some tweaks, but the idea is still pretty cool and worth checking out for a few minutes.

Download! (Click the three kanji link, right under the first "Gauntlet".)

hm. i have a pretty strong aversion to anime porn, but i'm curious to see what a battle garegga reference looks like.

i have an even stronger aversion to the sickly sweet anime nymphets who so often populate doujin games, but "shock troopers" is one of those magical keyphrases that'll get me to try anthing.

i'll download them both when i get home.

Sister Princess killed Takuya Fujima, so fuck all its spawn.

The Gal's Panic whosis looks like good goofy fun, tho.

Interesting...but why Sister Princess?

I've asked that question many a time. Anybody who can explain the appeal of that shit (unless it really is as simple as "Japanese dorks all want to mount anorexic cartoon 12-year-olds"), I'd love to hear.

I don't know why people say Gals Panic is tough... you just cut off the screen into halfs, then into quarters, and surround the monster. I finished two of the newer Gals Panic roms with all 99 and 100% ratings.

There's no nudity, though, so I think you'll make it out okay. The closest you get is some panty shot action, but you have to 100% a stage to get to the EX stage with that stuff.

Garegga reference is a ways in, though. Look for the boss monster with little yellow blob buddies, and wait for him to suck them all close to him in a formation. He's emulating Garegga's 2nd boss, it's pretty cute.

I have no idea what a Sister Princess is, and I'm sorry bjork, but you were born a Gals Panic deity if you claim the latter ones to be easy. The easiest GP is 4, by far, with S2 being extremely frustrating.

oh, i can actually see the garegga homage in that screenshot in the bottom right corner. invisibullets and all! actually a lot of those shots look like bullet patterns...i don't remember qix having any shooter elements.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think maybe the enemies in Qix II could fire shots at you. Maybe not. But, yeah, Gals Panic 4 and up all have a heavier shooter influence. It works pretty well, actually. Some patterns are annoyingly long and force you to just dodge for a little too long, but it's not too big of a deal.

I love how it kinda works like a shooter too, though. Kill enough enemies without dying and the gold star reward from each enemy will grow in size and points every time until the stars are huge and yield 10,000+. That's when you start looking for advanced patterns -- or, better yet, a thick laser -- to bomb and turn into huge points. Gotta love it!

"Gals Panic deity"

I like that. :)

My leet Qix technique: make one thin column up the middle of the screen, then make "branches" off that column on either side. Trap the Qix in one of the branches, then seal him in there and get like 98%.

I used to get mad loot on Worldwinner.com with their Qix ripoff, but after winning so many times I couldn't get anywhere NEAR the qualifying scores which lead me to believe that the site is a farce.

I'm having a bit of trouble in the missions at the moment. The second mission tells you to get "20,000 combos". What's the best way to do that? You can get some points towards it for trapping the smaller enemies and grabbing the jewels that go flying out. I've also noticed that you can get some combo points for skimming bullets. However, even if I spend the entire round doing that, I can never get even close to 20,000 before time runs out.

Same here, I'm definitely missing something on Mission 2. I'm doing the same stuff, but I can barely get a fourth of the required score. Also, when you say getting 100%, do you mean 100% field AND shadow, or just shadow? I can get 100% silhouette, but I have a hard time getting 100% field, too.

I don't think it's possible to get 100% field AND silhouette. When you draw a shape, it will always fill the area that the main enemy in the level isn't in (thus, if you box in the big enemy and there's none of the silhouette in there with him, you get an instant 100% silhouette). Thus, it would be impossible to clear 100% of both values, because the main enemy is always going to be on the field somewhere, and taking up space.

Haven't passed 2nd mission yet but got close a couple times. Basically what you do is trap the "Boss" down as soon as possible and just touch it along the edge that'll rack up point quickly.

I'm having huge trouble with it too. Max I can reach so far is about 8,000. RuGalz tip sounds pretty good, though, I'm gonna have to try that out tomorrow.

Mission mode has exclusive pix! Must be beaten!

Just silhouette. Getting 100% field is impossible, since you can't kill the boss.

You're right. That technique does work in Qix. I've always used a similar one myself.

Gals Panic, though, has enemies that try their best to fuck with you a lot more than they do in Qix. It's not as easy here.

Anyway, what's everyone's score in the normal mode? I'm rocking a steady 2.1 billion, with a 1 credit clear on my 2nd day of having the game. Still haven't managed the 1 life clear though. :(

Or getting the good ending, for that matter. I suppose you get it by getting straight 100% through your entire run and not losing a credit. I'm pretty close to that goal since I have know most of the easiest path to take through the game.

By the way... Has anyone figured out what the numbers in the "EXCONFIG" (it's under "GALLERY") mean? Not the playtime numbers, those are pretty easy to figure out. The colorful numbers that in my game say "0/4". What's all that about?

Yeah, didn't think you could get 100% field, but I thought I might've just been missing something.

I think the numbers under EXCONFIG are extra config options you can unlock that will appear in that menu. Of course, how to unlock them, I don't know.
