In a nutshell: the reviewer came off as an asshole of sorts that doesn't like the games in the comp. He mentions nothing of the quality of any of the ports but goes so far to sum up the package as "quaint" and "digestible" but also threw "boregasm" in there.

What version?
Doesn't say specifically but in the header it mentions [Playstation2, Xbox, Gamecube, PC]. I think ultimately it didn't matter to the reviewer which version was played. :-\

Condemned is the cover story? What do they say about it? I'm interested in this title.
I only skimmed the mag but the feature looks pretty indepth and had screenshots I haven't seen before. It might be worth you looking for if you are interested in the game :D

Damn, Sly 3 9.5

Too many mixed reviews for this game. BTW, why do they release the same series 3 times in console's life? Going back to Mario days? lol

The ports are of a fine quality. It's the package that warrants a 5. I should know because I am the a-hole of sorts.

Why do people think the quality of a compilation's ports should determine its review score?

You're calling some of the greatest arcade racers of all time "boring?"

...justify. Now.

both castlevania and Trauma Center are out on the 4th of October, aren't they?

Disco Stu, I'm just calling it like I read it. It would've been nice for you to mention that in your review. You really didn't sound to enthused about the package as a whole and tried to come off clever about it. Reviewing the MAT3 was clearly a chore to you. I translated that as being an "asshole of sorts" because it seems you couldn't appreciate the nostalgic appeal the game would offer to the fans. Giving the game a 5 is fine. I have no issue with that but you did nothing to enlighten the fans of the port work of any of the games. That's very critical as you've surely read on these very forums and important to people interested in purchasing MAT3.

I think it's the 4th for castlevania, but I've seen different release dates for Trauma center. EB and gamestop says the 4th, but DS IGN says the 11th.

I understand fully what you're saying. The quality of the ports does matter in compilations.

Given limited space and the need to convey information about Treasures to both the hardcore fans and those who may not have been exposed to the titles in the first place, however, something had to give. Had the matter of the porting been more in my mind (say, if it was problematic), I would have been more likely to call attention to it. I'll strive to be more comprehensive in the future.

Maybe not score per se, but I think the bulk of the review text should address the quality of the ports. All of the games included in compilations were released years ago, and have already been widely reviewed and most likely played (and enjoyed) by the people who are interested in checking out the multi-game packs. So your job should shift from critiquing and explaining each game in the package to critiquing the package itself, the presentation and faithfulness to the source material.

p.s. - Rush 2049 DC alone mops the floor with every 7, 8, and 9 scoring game in the mag, Katamari included (and you know it pains me to say that). Y'all are insane. :(

Wow, Condemneds the cover story? I'll definately have to check this one out then as I've been waiting a while for some details on the game.

*ahem* Ninja Gaiden Black would like to see you outside, Mr. Conover.

Disco Stu writes for Play Magazine? Is there no one in games journalism that can escape Dave "Platformer" Halverson? ;)

I disagree.

If the bulk of a, say, Midway Arcade Treasures 3 review text concerns itself with a discussion of the quality of a game's ports, doesn't that mean the score is being gauged on Midway's ability to faitfully reproduce 6-10 year old arcade titles on PlayStation 2 and Xbox? And then, if the porting is perfect and a grade is being issued to represent that, why does the overall presentation matter?

I think I'd also argue that a lot of casual gamers purchase compilations, solely for the fact that they get a bunch of titles for a low price. This is just a hunch, mind you.

Anyway, I'm inclined to let review scores stand and not chime in -- but the discussion of how collections should be handled is kind of interesting.

Fair enough. And my apologies on the asshole comment. I genuinely like Play and read it every month (own every issue since #1).
