Play PSP on TV! (omgwtf?!)

Team Xtender: PSP On Your TV Incredible Accessory W.I.P

The folks at Team Xtender have given us a heads up on their debut and quite simply amazing project for the PSP - the PSP to TV accessory. Not only will this upcoming product allow you to play your PSP games directly on the big screen (TV), but rather more remarkably it will allow you utilize the superior method of a PS2 controller! It also supports functions such as auto fire and best of all this is suitable for all gamers as it requires absolutely NO soldering. They have completed the schematics as well as the mould renders for production, of which they have given us to share with you all.

this one ... i dunno what to think yet except laugh at the pics ... maybe when i wake up ...

A POX on Sony for not including a TV Out in the PSP! At one point they were supposed to but then decided against it. I mean lets get real here most PSP owners play it at home and when you are at home the option to hook it up to the big screen would be quite enjoyable. That thing looks quite cumbersome though but if it allows the PS2 controller then it might not be a problem.

I would rather Sony make an official add-on however.

Sounds like a step in the right direction. People trying to get screen captures or just those who want to play games like Wipeout Pure on the big screen might be interested in this. i'm hoping in vain that they'll offer S-video support, because screenshots/videos through composite could look worse than digicam shots.

What are you on about? I hardly ever play mine at home, it's a portable :D

I've got an Xbox/PS2/GC when I want to play games at home.

Connecting your PSP to a TV sounds a bit lame, although the resolution is similar to the PSOne, so the games won't look that bad.

I'd be totally down for that, just so I could play with a PS2 controller.

I wonder if you could play with the PSP screen + controller.

That'd be ideal for me.

Doesn't that sorta.. defeat the whole purpose of the thing?
sort of like how the GB Player defeated the purpose of the GBA?

edit: oh, i see that ground is already been covered. give me a call if you need me ;P

Not for me. I never owned a SNES during its heyday. Owning the GBP was like getting brand new 2D console games all the time.

This PSP thing is pretty worthless though. The best part about it would probably be emulators.

I dont have a PSP so i dont know what ports are there, were this "tvplayer" sits on the PSP?

Are there any really?... No soldering, means there should be either magic or some ports for this on the PSP.

Good for you.

Yes, and the fact that there's a plethora of movie titles available for PSP... Why not?

...because there's a better (and sometimes cheaper) movie format to use with your television?

Well that's true if you're speaking on a personal level, but if you're looking from a purely logical standpoint, the PSP adapter would make more sense than the GB Player... But I can understand where you're coming from as well. But why didn't you ever have a SNES? Why not just get the real thing if that's what you're looking for? But that's for another thread...

Not if you like taking your movies on the go, AND watch them at home... There's no better option.

GBP makes much more sense, because if you don't own a GBA you can still play gba games on the ngc. Jeez, just buy a PS2 and DVDs, it's cheaper and better (quality and software wise).

True. Well I can see it this way as well. I never really thought of it like that... I always assume if you have GBA game, you have a portable Nintendo machine. But yeah I could see people doing that.

I didnt get a SNES because my parents didnt want me addicted to games (that worked out real well), so they got me a Game Boy instead.

I still fail to see how the PSP thing would make more logical sense than the GBP. PSP is supposed to offer current-gen graphics and gameplay on a handheld. It's like playing the Sonic Game Gear games on television. And for the movies... Well DVDs.

For the GBP, you can't really find console equivalents of GBA games out there anymore (save for the two new 2D Zeldas that came out this gen), so viewing them on a television screen would make sense.

EDIT: What ejdonk said.

Quality of the game lineup aside, I don't see why anyone would claim that somehow this device (assuming it worked flawlessly) would be worse than the GameBoy player.

GameBoy Player:
+Plays GBA games on a TV with a controller
+Still plays multiplayer with other connected GBA devices
-Requires a GameCube
-Pretty bleh border
-Pretty dramatic pixel blow-up

This Thing for PSP:
+Plays UMD movies. Suddenly UMD movies wouldn't be a COMPLETE waste of money. You could play them on other devices, and even rip them to your PVR with ease.
+Plays PSP games, meaning instead of buying two copies of a multi-platform console game that comes to PSP (e.g. Madden), could be only purchased once and still be enjoyed on a TV or portably.
+Also would keep multiplayer functionality. I think.
-Most PSP games don't look as good as their console counterparts, especially Madden, which looks awful. Wouldn't quite solve the porting problem, as most ports to the PSP are worse, not equal.
-Probably pretty expensive
-No clue how the resolution would translate to a normal TV, though I imagine fine, with black bars above and below.

Looks pretty even to me. I like the ergonomics of the GBAs, so this was never a reason, but my hands can't stand the PSP's design, so this would be a must-buy for me if it did everything I wanted.

I travel a lot, so this is great for me. I am tired of carrying my PSTwo and its external power source or the behemothic Xbox just to connect it to some hotel's tiny TV.

I'd buy it in a second.

*shrug* I'd love to have the option of playing PSP games on a larger screen with a more comfortable, more durable controller. Then I can play a game comfortably at home and continue it on the road, something I really can't do too conveniently with a PS2. As far as I'm concerned, it's a useful item.

I liked to have the functionality for free in the nomad, but paying for it and carrying that monster around isnt really that great. And I think I prefer the PSP screen over a cheap and small hotel tv

The UMDs are recorded at the same resolution as DVDs.

That doesn't mean anything. What's the bitrate? It's completely impossible for a UMD to hold a DVD-quality movie. I can record movies at any resolution you like, but that's not what determines video quality.

And on the real subject here, that's awesome! I've been waiting for this device. I do most of my gaming at home, and welcomed the Super Game Boy and the Game Boy Player both with open arms. I hate portables, because portable games look, sound, and play better on a home setup (some DS games excluded). The GBA Player got me to buy more GBA games, and if this thing is decent, I'll be buying more PSP games...maybe even a few UMD movies that are good for travelling, since I'll be able to watch them on TV at home.

You are forgetting that DVDs use old and busted MPEG2 and UMD uses the new hotness, MPEG4.*

MPEG2 is far from busted, but it is older and less aggressive compression standard. All the new sexy video compression codecs like DviX, XViD, WM9, H.264 etc are all based on MPEG4. MPEG4 gives you similar quality output at about the third of the file size compared to MPEG2.

Completely impossible if it used MPEG-2, yes. But UMDs use MPEG-4 AVC, also known as H.264. This codec provides better quality even than MPEG-4 SP, and given that MPEG-4 SP already offers significant space savings over MPEG-2, I don't see it as being impossible to have a DVD quality movie on a 1.8Gb UMD. Remember that these things don't have any extras - all they contain is the movie and nothing else.

The hate is strong in this thread :lol
