Playing FF7 for the first time....

Doc Holliday

SPOILER: Columbus finds America
Ok so i decided to pick up ff7 for the first time in order to get ready for Advent Children...

My god i have lost a lot patience with RPG's :( not mention the fact that i'm a little older and no longer have any time to play. Rough start at first but like all other square rpgs, the god damn story and characters sucked me in. I just left midgar, and my question to you folks is..

You should go ahead and watch advent children or should plunge into a 40+ hour rpg with crappy ps1 graphics?

It's your choice. You might not understand Advent Children, but the plot of the movie isn't good anyway. Watch it primarily to admire the pretty graphics.

If the characters and story have 'sucked you in' and you're enjoying it, then just continue playing.

It's not worth playing through FF7 just for Advent Children. AC has no story whatsoever, and the links to the actual game are pretty freaking fragile. There was no point to the film, other than milk out money from FF7 fans.

It has lots of cool action scenes, though. :P

I wouldn't play through a 40 hour game that didn't heavily interest me for a movie. Especially a crappy one like Advent Children (or The Spirits Within).

Does advent children spoil ff7 to the point where one cant enjoy it? I know the big ff7 spoiler already
aeris bites the dust

I thought the Spirits Within was cool.

When the gaia theory stuff started happening though I knew it was gonna get panned. I could sense the scrunched up faces of people around me in the cinema. I particularly liked James Woods' character.

What did people want? Lots of monsters and summons?

Well, it spoils it in that it pretty much gives the run down on the entire ending of the game.

Advent Children barely makes much sense in its own right. It won't make a lick of sense if you haven't played through FF7.

What did people want? None of the Gaia bullshit that showed up in the film and action beyond slowly backing up while shooting at transparent (pretty) monsters. It was a Final Fantasy movie without a sword. WTF?

Honestly, though, after Advent Children I realize I don't want to watch a Final Fantasy movie.

Well, it spoils FF7's ending, but not too heavily(doesn't focus on details, but on the big picture). But uh seriously, AC is not a good movie. It's a good showcase of cool fight scenes. :P

Hell man, I am a FF fan and I cringed when they brought up the Gaia bullcrap. It's just too ridiculous for the movie(nevermind how it was presented). I would've wanted something completely different. FFTSW was an absolute waste of money and CG. You could replace all the characters and CG with real people and real sets the story/film wouldn't have been affected in any way. At least you can't say the same about AC. Yeah, I liked AC better, even if it is a non-film. :P

I still don't get how people think FF7 is not a good game. Honestly, is it because it has a huge following, and people are trying to act unique by hating a beloved rpg. I don't get it. If Xenogears was met with the same acclaim as FF7, suddenly people who loved Xenogears would bash it.

I didn´t like FF7 back when it was released. I simply can´t stand the slow pace, lack of entertaining exploring, long random fights and whatosever. I mean, gameplay-wise it was a lacking experience, at least for me. Not to say the Spanish translation was the lamest thing I´ve ever seen. Just to think one day I arrived to Tifa´s house (I think it was there) and someone told me "your party is up waiting for you". The Spanish translation was "Tu fiesta te espera arriba", fiesta meaning something like party-time instead the group of people that is with you. And I was like "WTF?". How could I enjoy a RPG with such a translation?

I was in the same predicament.

I started to play FFVII, but I didn't have the time to finish it, nor did I really feel like continuing on. In the end, I decided to read a plot summary of the game, along with character descriptions and I was pretty set. I think the main thing about the movie is the nostalgia factor. I enjoyed Advent Children, but not nearly to the same extent as most people who enjoyed FFVII at its release.

Just go ahead and watch the movie. It's a good watch regardless.

FF7 might not be a terrible game but its a very average RPG. I somewhat liked the Materia system but the ATB battle system was never all that good to begin with. Pretty much no dungeons either..Not to mention it had the worst soundtrack in an FF game ever. And it says something about the state of storytelling in games that people actually consider the convoluted and dumb story in FF7 good.

here's some advice:

spend ALL your time leveling aeriths, make sure u buy all the best equipment for her and that she is your highest level, trust me it pays off

i hope thats not a bannable offense

He already knows......

Anyway...for me Advent Children had extra worth because I played FFVII as a kid and I got emotionally attached to the characters. Without that, Advent Children is just a weird movie with cool action sequences. Play FFVII for what it is, not just for AC.

Bingo. I actually liked it until they left Midgar, then it pretty much loses its momentum entirely.

Also, popping it in a few months ago really drove home how godawful the music is. I like the actual compositions, but that MIDI is ear-fuckingly bad, even for 1997 MIDI.

If you're enjoying it, then keep at it. After watching Advent Children I'm going through the game for a second time (I only beat it once, way back in the day). It's actually a much better game than I remembered.

I just finished watching AC... I knew I was a FFVII fanboy but I'd forgotten how MUCH of a fanboy I was.... holy shit... yeah the movie is basically action sequence after action sequence after action sequence.. but so f'n what... all of the sequences are cool as f(ck, and it was cool seeing everybody again AND hearing the remixes of various FFVII compositions. I have no problem with this movie whatsoever.... If I wasn't feening for a FFVII remake before... I really, really, REALLY am now....

First time I got FF7 it took over a year for me to finish it (started over a lot and school). I'm playing through it again now, and I still like it. No other FF that I know of have so much game play. You end up doing a lot of stuff in this game: keeping in a marching line and not screwing up on the drill, a snowboarding mini game, very hard battles *emerald and ruby*, a play on a stage, the list goes on and on. Maybe I like it because it was my first rpg and I'm now going over good times I had with the game (been years). I'm just glad I like it.

Bingo.

Hey, FFVII is a fun game, but it's very unpolished and flawed, too. It's easily one of the worst FFs.

Oh come on, FFII, FFVIII, and FFXI are all much worse than FFVII.

I'm playing FFVII again as well, and if you can look past the utterly horrible graphics, there is a solid RPG there. Interesting environments, lots of optional quests, cool characters, and a great battle system.

Wow, well... I think there's a difference - a big one at that - between horrible graphics and outdated graphics. FF7 was beautiful for its time, and because of that, I don't think I'd ever consider the graphics to be "bad," no matter how far technology has come.

II, yes. VIII and XI, no.

Actually, from day one I thought the graphics were terrible. I don't care that the FMVS were great, or that even the battle scenes were decent, the absolute shit that amounted 90% of the game didn't make up for it.

That said, even with shit graphics, I still look past them and enjoy the game.

Oh. Well okay then, to each his own. :) What did you think of FF8 and 9 as far as visuals go?

VIII easily owns VII

In fact, VIII is the best "new-school" FF. Junction wasn't that great, but everything else was A+ quality.

My suggestion is to pick up a good strategy guide for FFVII so you get the story and most of the content of the game without having to actually figure out the puzzles and dungeons yourself (which were not the most enjoyable aspects of the game for me).

Once you can sort of mindlessly go through the game having fun killing stuff and levelling up without beating your head against the wall over it, you'll probably be able to put it away over a 3-4 days having gotten all there is to the story.

Please put FFVII to rest. No remake, no more of these ridiculous spinoffs.

By making all but 2 playable sidequests mandatory to beat the game?

Dude, here's sidequests in FFVIII:
The Queen of Cards
Card Club
just playing Triple triad in general
Getting all the Rare cards (PuPu, Fat chocobo, Angelo, Gilgamesh, MiniMog, Chocobo, Quezacotl, Shiva, Ifrit, Siren, Secret, Minotaur, Carbunkle, Diablos, Leviathan, Odin, Pandemona, Cerberus, Alexander, Phoenix, Bahamut, Doomtrain, Eden, Ward, Kiros, Laguna, Selphie, Quistis, Irvine, Zell, Rinoa, Edea, Seifer, Squall).
Getting all Quistis' Blue Magic.
Getting all the GFs (this goes along with next few ones)
Centra Ruins
Deep Sea Research Center
Ultimate & Omega Weapons
Upgrading your characters' weapons & limits (getting all the magazines and "junk" items).
Chocobo World.

You can consider the SeeD quizzes somewhat of a side quest as well.

Besides, Triple Triad is better than all other FF minigames combined. And you can include half of all FF sidequests in there, too.
