Playing my PS3 collection in 1080p/60fps on PC is an amazing experience

The PS3 generation was great, no doubt about it. It was a time when franchises got entire trilogies in the span of a single generation. It was a time when Western AAA wasn´t a complete dumpster fire. And despite the japanese devs having a rough time with the new HD era, they created some of the best games I´ve ever played. Simply put, I absolutely loved this generation and thus I have a pretty substantial PS3 collection that consists of both physical and digital games. But as much as I love this generation, going back to some of these games is very much headache inducing, and it´s even more difficult to play these old games when you are used to 60fps and 4K graphics on the PS5. Look, PS3 as a console is awesome, way ahead of its time with its multimedia features and Blu-Ray support, but as we all know the Cell architecture made it very difficult to develop for. And it shows. A lot of the games on PS3 runs like complete ass, with low framerates and resolution, screen tearing, bad image quality and stuttering.

When I got into PC gaming a couple of years ago I discovered that a lot of games on PS3 were also available on the Steam and GoG storefronts. It was also through PC that I discovered RPCS3, the famous PS3 emulator. This made me realize that there was a way to experience these old games in high definition and with smooth framerates, so I started to accumulate all of the games from my PS3 collection on the PC. And playing through them again is like a whole new experience. They all play and look so good it´s almost unreal. It´s a night and day difference compared to playing them on PS3.

So far I´ve tried out Alice: Madness Returns, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Dead Space, The Saboteur, Just Cause 2, Castle of Illusion, DuckTales remastered, Demon´s Souls, Spec Ops: The Line, Final Fantasy 13, Rayman Origins, Sleeping Dogs, Batman: Arkham Asylum and City, Drakengard 3, Trinity: Souls of Zill O´ll, and Deadly Premonition.

Some games are truly transformative on PC. Demon´s Souls for example, is very rough on PS3. Some of the levels, like Boletaria 2-1 and Valley of Defilement, are chugging along at barely 20 fps most of the time. It´s also very blurry and dark, and it just looks downright awful. And it´s a shame because Demon´s Souls is a very beautiful game with a cool art direction that sometimes get lost due to PS3 just being a shitty platform. But on PC, it´s no problem to achieve 1080p at 60fps and it´s just so good to play. Souls-games deserve to be played at 60 fps and Demon´s Souls especially, since it never got a proper remaster like the Dark Souls trilogy. Sure, you can play the gorgeous remake on PS5 but the original has a different flavor to it that the remake doesn´t really capture.

Drakengard 3 is another great example. It´s barely playable on PS3. It suffers from crashes and very low framerates plus it has annoying screen tearing. I never finished it on PS3 due to it being so awful technically. But on RPCS3 it not only looks great but it also plays great. I was not able to get it to 60fps because somehow it breaks the game but at a locked 30 it does play very smooth. I have also had a very good time with Lords of Shadow, Just Cause 2 and Dead Space. They look incredible still to this day and to be able to play at silky smooth framerates just enhances the experience ten fold. They have aged like fine wine. In the case of Lords of Shadow, it´s so far the only decent AAA Castlevania to this date. Even though it´s molded around the God of War blueprint, Mercury Steam manages to make it feel like a proper Castlevania. It´s fucking awesome to play and I hope the rumor about a new AAA Castlevania is real. We need a new contender to Lords of Shadow.

I plan to go through all of my collection if I can and have the means to it. I still have a lot of games left, like Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom, GTA 4 and many more. It´s so cool that I finally can play all of these games in the way they were intended to, without compromises and technical hiccups. The PS3 generation is one of the very best, with an amazing library of games and to see them in a new light like this, is a dream come true. They almost feel like completely new games.

If you have any similar experiences or tips on PS3 games that plays better on PC, please share them here so I can check them out.

Playing on PC has blurred the console generations for me, that i forgot Arkham Asylum and Sleeping Dogs are from PS3 gen. That means those games are unavailable on PS5 now right? That’s sad for console players

Sleeping Dogs and the Arkham-games got remasters on PS4, thus making them playable on PS5 through BC. Sleeping Dogs is 1080p at 60fps but the Arkham-games are capped at 30, which is a very weird decision to make. On PC they run at 60 with no issues. They look way better too, especially City. Honestly, the Return to Arkham collection is pretty shitty all around.

I've been doing the same thing and basically having the same experience. Feels like I'm playing the games closer to their creators original vision (if that makes sense). So far I've done mostly Skyrim and Dark Souls but I've played a bit of Castlevania LoS, Dead Space 2, DMC3, Aliens CM, Borderlands, Bioshock, DOA5. I'm playing all these maxed out on a 3050TI laptop GPU. I'm not sure what the weakest GPU is that will max these games out but you do not need a multi-thousand dollar desktop PC to have this experience. It's fucking incredible.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
Trying to play old games on consoles without modern port is just a mess. You really have to have the original working hardware and tinker with adapters and whats-not to make them work on modern TVs. The games are hard to find too and if you do, they often have expensive pricetag.

Like Way of the Samurai 4 cost US$56 on Play-Asia for PS3, but US$25 on Steam.

I just realized that this means I can play Hard Corps Uprising again without digging out my old PS3 Phat.

I hate that the PS3 gen is now considered "classic". Time has no mercy

Its the best generation imo, so im glad it gets its flowers nowadays. I guess its time to replay brutal legend.

Arkham Asylum is locked at 45 fps on One X, which is pretty good on Series X if you have a 120hz VRR screen, as it's then a pretty smooth 45fps mode

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I played through the first half of Eternal Sonata using PS3 emulation last year, and I agree - the fact that this game isn't just left to the sands of time is a testament to what they're doing with the emulator. The game holds up incredibly well still, I should probably finish it.

Did Sleeping Dogs get a 60fps patch on Playstation?
I know the Xbox version got FPS Boost, but that wasn't a patch. Would still be stuck at 30fps otherwise.

My first experience with RPCS3 has been with Demon's Souls and it has blown my mind. With save editor I recreated my main character and have picked up in the ng+4 cycle I had left off on the PS3.

Had no idea that PS3 emulation was a functional thing. How much bugs are there? I’d love to play Motorstorm. Is it playable?

I have the PS4-version but never played it. I've only played it on PC. I thought the game ran at 60 fps on PS4 but upon taking a closer look, it seems it runs in only 30 fps. Which of course, is complete bullshit. Thank god for PC.

PS3 emulation works very well if you have a capable PC but not all games are 100% functional. I don't know about Motorstorm since I haven't played it but of the games I have tested only Silent Hill Downpour and Infamous 2 have been a bad experience. Other games that require the sixaxis might also be unplayable, like Folklore. Everything else has worked like a charm. You do however, have to tinker a bit with settings to get the best performance. There are loads of guides on YouTube on how to set up RPCS3 properly.

Hell yeah! RPCS3 is one of the best emulators ever. I use it on handheld and the power draw is so insanely low given what it spits out. I am personally most amazed by RCPSN. Like the guys made a PSN alternative just like that. Tekken 5 DR (which is only available on PS3 PSN) and Killzone 2 are some games I have played online on RPCS3 and they played great. I also recommend Wipeout HD. Works really well on the emulator and is great racing game if you like Wipeout.

Also the best ways to play God of War 1,2, Ghost of Sparta and Chains of Olympus are through RPCS3. They work so much better on that emulator and look the best.

Most games look and run great. Wipeout HD for instance is amazing, at 4k 120hz it feels like the game came out yesterday. Shadow of the colossus is another good one. Lair still runs like shit though lol.

What might confuse some people is you have to play each game a while for shader compilation to finish and then everything becomes smooth. Before that you get terrible stuttering and weird graphics issues.

Sleeping dogs is sadly 30fps on ps4/5 port.
All Arkham games too but the first 2 have unique console remasters. Kinda controversial

Funnily enough I played my first emulated PS3 game last week, Ridge Racer 7. It's a relative oldie but boy was it a delightful experience to see it beautifully enhanced on my pc. Only problem now is the sheer amount of PS3 games that are going to be added to my already creaking PC & Switch backlog. It was a great gen, the PS360 era.

Yeah, Just tried to play some AC2 on PS5 today to find out that it runs at 30fps, so what did i do ? Booted on PC and boom 4k@60 all the way.

What kills consoles for me is having a powerfull hardware that you cant use fully If devs dont write 3 lines of codes.

RPCS3 really does breathe new life into these classic games. There is a 60 fps config for one of my all-time favorite PS3 games, Heavenly Sword. Such a great experience!

Heavenly Sword is definitely a game I need to revisit. I enjoyed it on PS3 but it was clear that it was held back by the technology of the time. One of Ninjas Theorys most underrated games.

I also find myself going back in time often these days. The crazy thing at the time --- I completely took it all for granted. Awesome games and media were just how it was, how could that ever change? I assumed PS1-3, Dreamcast type experiences would just continue on and on. I still try out new titles, just seldomly now. I never thought I would be going back to games 20 years old. That was unimaginable, it was crazy talk.

69% of games are in a playable state. Throw something at it and there's a good chance it works.

It was a great gen, but let down by hardware not up to the task of displaying these resolutions and framerates.

Emulation will definitely help getting a better experience out of these classic games.

I think RPCS3 is a fantastic emulator and Lossless Scaling works with it too so you can get 120fps (frame generated). I understand not everyone is a fan of frame gen, but I had a good enough time on Demon's Souls with it.

The progress on RPCS3 has been really good, and it's really only a handful of games left where I can't get the performance I want yet at 4k.

Last month found a cheap copy of Tales of Xillia at a thrift store, and had never gotten around to playing that game in the series. Looked up on my phone that the game is playable, and sure enough runs well.

Also a great way to play the Sly Cooper games, since The Sly Collection improves a number of visuals vs what you can even do on the PS2 versions with emulation.

For turn-based games I could see that being nice because there isn't really the downside of the input latency hit to care about.

I've found when the base framerate is 60fps it really isn't too bad. Demon's Souls was more than playable for me especially compared to the PS3 version.

The thing is you need the right sort of PC to get the best out of this, my 2014 PC I use would probably struggle, I have no issue with bringing out the PS3 from time to time, minimum issue no messing around with any config files, I remember trying to get Dolphin to work on the Xbox Series X, was a nightmare...in the end towards the back end of last-year I brought a Wii which was Gamecube compatible and I don't regret getting it...maybe in a few years I might check this out, but interesting to hear anyway how this is coming along seeing as Sony won't look to expand their backward compatibles catalogue anytime soon..

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
Yeah agree. Played Asura's Wrath via emulation and had a fantastic experience doing so at 4K/60fps.

Yeah games from the Ps3/360 generations hold up really well in both gameplay and visuals if you simply bring them up to modern resolution and performance standards.
Its a big reason why even this gen I think focusing on decent IQ at 60fps >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> better graphics.

Look at a game like Vanquish:

The setting is cool, it has a fun and fast paced combat that constantly keeps you engaged with cool animations and setpieces. The last thing I'm thinking while playing is "bb..but the texutures...and polygons...and reflections on the windows!!"
