PlayStation Blog: PlayStation 4 Turns One

You must have missed the update that added a music player to the OS.
You mean the music player that only plays music off a USB stick? The one that doesn't actually play music on the PS4 and uses a shitty work around?

No, I didn't miss that terrible update.

This being 20 years makes me more hyped for their event in December. If they wanna get full nostalgia on us. This would be a perfect time for stuff like: a crash bandicoot reboot, ff7 remake, a new street fighter,...

Weird how people still cant find one tool in their living room that plays music and expect a console to do it. So, you got no pc, mp3 player, radio or usb stick?

eh, that's reaching a bit IMHO. the player works great actually and is very snappy.

What's wrong with playing music off a USB stick?

I'd like to know this too. Not much difference between plugging in a usb stick to play music off of compared to playing it off the HDD.

Same difference. It still plays music in the background while you play games and browse.

Shu reminds me of George Costanza in this pic, lol.

Strong first year in spite of some hiccups along the way. Hopefully they've learned from the problems that have come up and 2015 will be stronger for it.

What could that "been with us since the beginning mean"?

I've owned every single PlayStation console released (ps, ps2, psp, ps3, vita, ps4 & pstv), but how the hell would Sony even know?
Shit I can't even remember anything about playing killzone online other than trying to navigate the shitty ps2 online menus.

The PS4 only has two USB inputs. With the anemic battery life of the controller and MY Gold Headset, I happen to have both USB inputs filled most often.

Anemic? Thats a bit of a stretch. Just plug them in when your done. Also how long are people's average sessions?

Yea agree I do feel we will get an old franchise brought back and the re-announcement of the last guardian

He was speaking more generally than that. Don't worry.

PS1 happily resting upside down.

20 years, any Sony exec been there since the start ?

I know Shu has been there since the PS1 days, although I don't know if that's since the beginning of the PS era. Andy House has been with them for a long time I believe, as well as Kaz Hirai (although he's obviously gone up the ladder now).

Regardless of the USB input situation (have to play musical chairs in USB ports is laughable in 2014) as another user pointed out, literally EVERY other internet connected device I have has a native music player.

It's a barely acceptable work around that, seemingly, no other manufacturer on earth has.

But no, really, congrats to Sony and the PS4 for being a great place to play games, if not a great place for anything else.

Shu and House are pretty much part of the founders, they were part of the team even before PS1 launched. ( Shu was in 3rd-party relations back then )

Shawn Layden was also part of the very, very early years/starting points of SCE. Not well-documented as the others, so no idea when he joined in earnest.

Kaz joined SCE in 1995.

Cerny has been working with them since the begining as well. He was the first person in US to work on the PSX devkit, stuff of that nature. There are actually a lot of people who have been with the playstation from the beginning, or close enough to it

man 20 years coming up eh? Some amazing memories with the PS brand over the years.

Congrats on the extremely successful first year with the PS4

Good not great first year but that was expected. 2015 looking great (give me Bloodborne) and I can't wait for the event in Dec. Hopefully some good announcements!

A small question is the 13.5 million units sold directly to consumer? it says shipped worldwide! I remember sir Andrew House mentioned the words sold directly to consumer back at Gamescom.

I think it's been a pretty bad year from a consumer standpoint, however, almost everything I'm excited about next year is on PS4, and the majority of that is exclusive. Looking to start killing it any month now.

How would it be if Sony offered one free game(a digital download and it could be any PS4 game of your choice) to all PS4 gamers to celebrate the first anniversary? What do you say Gaf?

That was a quick year
It was a good year though

-bf4 was awesome war on a massive scale
-DC Universe online
-warframe
-the final Fantasy 14 betas that lead up to the game
-the destiny alpha & beta
- the P. T.
- countless free games from ps+ (though some I passed on because I didn't enjoy)
- PS Now (I enjoy renting games, Sue me)

These are games that interested me
I don't need big budget AAA exclusive games to win me over, I need game system I enjoy playing, and that's what Sony did, a majority of that list above, was free and did not cost me a dime.
