Playstation Live!

WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU?!

God damn, I had a PS2 pretty much from launch and ended up buying an Xbox for in part Halo 2 but mostly a PORT of Pro Evolution Soccer 4, because the Xbox version had online support. It's quite clear that while X360 is coming out first, PS3 is going to be noticably more powerful but when both consoles are out on the market Microsoft's online set-up is going to slay Sony once again.

How can Sony fail to do the math? 2m Xbox Live subscribers on their userbase would translate to how many subscriptions across the many millions of PS2s?! Announcing a console would be the perfect time to announce your Live-killing online infrastructure, but Sony has just completely glossed over online gaming as far as I've seen. Is there a Sony Online in the making, or is the PS3 just going to rely on RPGs and GTA?

I'd take that the ethernet connections clearly suggest the system is going online... They do have some sort of online system for the PS2, which is not really that good I say, but I think they will come up with something.

Just wait and see, that's all what we can do.

From Gamespot:

Sony also emphasized that the PlayStation 3 would have similar online connectivity and services as the next generation of Xbox Live. Calling it "an always on, always connected device," Chatani said the PS3 would be constantly in touch with a "PlayStation World" network "fundamentally based on a on community, communication commerce, and content." He said that subscribers could "exchange unique characters and items through the network," much like Microsoft's Xbox Live Marketplace.

Why wouldn't they be talking about this now is what I don't get; Microsoft made a big song and dance about Live! 2, but nothing tangible is coming from Sony.

didn't listen to the entire PC.... was there any talk of "playstation live" by Sony last night?

seems odd to go on and on about Bluray yet ignore online gaming.

probably because with the launch a year away, they have time to release more details (like fall and spring TGS, etc). MS pretty much has this and nothing else. Well, they could do fall TGS, but why would MS announce something in japan?

"Playstation World" is listed on several slides. I'm assuming that's the name of the "service."

Maybe it's far from complete and they don't have any pricing decided upon (perhaps XBL Silver threw a wrench in their plans, along with Nintendo's suppossed service).

Or, they may just want to parcel out the information. I really hope all 3 competitors compete with great services.

Sony is just trying not to blow its entire wad in one show. They have a later release date than Microsoft, they'll show it. Patience :)

They have plenty of time to detail stuff.

Compared to the basic demostration most were expecting, they pretty much blew their money shot all over the conference. PS3 was the focus of their entire press show and they didn't cover everything. In terms of specifics, the only really covered the tip of the iceberg. We have lots of specs and lots of screens to digest, nevermind the detailed questions everyone already has.

The good thing is that now that Sony has officially jizzed all over the place, they can use future press conferences and media shows (GDC, TGS, etc) to smoke a cigarette and outline the specifics. They could have just released a few specs, trotted up some developers who promise big things and then moved on to PSP and PS2 and more Powerpoint slides, which means we would have had to wait until the next show. No more "wait for TGS" promises. Now, most all NDAs have expired and Sony and devs can grant all sorts of interviews and answer tons of questions.

I think the fact is they are not complete with the plans and wanted to see what MS was going to do first. To be honest, it is going to be pretty hard to beat the new Live.

$20 says Sony Live will be a total mess for the first 6 months.

360 is gonna be the place to be for online, with all Xbox live had plus spectators, marketplace & an even more unified interface.

Im especially excited for Spectator mode, after the frenzy that was Halo 2 GAF vs. OA, and that was only waiting for the stats to update! Watching stuff like that is gonna be awesome.

Its not a 2005 product, nor even an early 2006 product by the sound of it. If they're not saying anything more concrete about online for PS3 by end of this year, then I'd start to worry. In the meantime, watching how they plan to evolve the PSP online strategy may be the best place to look for hints of what's to come.

But it wouldn't be hard to match it's key features. All Sony needs.

IMO they shouldn't even try.... build a solid foundation set 1.0, then next year add more... there's no reason to try to jump to straight competiting with XBL 2.0.

So after years of free online PS2 titles, they slap THIS in our faces.

Isnt the fact that it was free the reason people bought more PS2s?

This really is going to be a close battle this gen...

Alternate revenue streams to counter more expensive to produce console perhaps. They arent made of money. Besides £40 a year isnt that bad, I think £30 is fair but then £0 would be even better.
Keep blowing wad, jizzing and cumming analogies out of threads kthnxbye.
