PlayStation Store 01/29/13 - Let’s Fish: Hooked On (Vita) | GTA: Vice City

For anyone who got bayonetta via PSN:
How does the game play compared to the disc ver.+install patch? Is the framerate good?

Likewise with the ZoE Collection, how is it compared to the disc ver., any improvements on performance, etc?

A Ni no Kuni dynamic theme for Plus, nice. Was that added this week or has that been there for a while? (EU)

Dokuro download says its the trial version. There's no unlock key, just one 350 mb download

What?

Probably just what they named the installer.

I'm kinda tempted by Samurai Warriors 2, as it was by far my favourite game in the series, but I'm pretty wary of PS2 Classics. I don't rate the chances of them coming to PS4 particularly high, as I can't imagine it'll be easy work.

No when installed and booted it says trial version. Trophies also dont show up in the Trophy app.

dOESN't the PS3 just emulate the PS2 games? Pretty sure the PS4 can do that...down the line...1 year after its release...when it goes on a price drop...and Sony use PS2 emulation to desperatly get people to buy a PS4.

At any rate, keep in mind that it's a PAL game so it'll be 50 Hz. Best to see if it has a 60 Hz option via google or such.

Oh, I thought you just meant the download. That sucks but I guess it wouldn't be an SCEE update without a colossal fuckup. They'll probably fix it in a day or two.

We don't know how exactly they're running the PS2 games. But even presuming they're purely running on an emulator, I'm not going to just blindly have faith in them for reasons you've pointed out and others. I'm pretty annoyed that even one year after release, there are still plenty of PSP games that aren't Vita compatible (let alone the PS1 games that aren't).

And I'm pretty sure the Dynasty/Samurai Warriors games were all optimised for 50Hz, so that really doesn't matter.

Wait how does optimizing for 50 Hz even work? Doesn't 50 Hz result in a game runing slower?

It depends how it was designed.
Most modern games don't tend to rely on the frame being a fixed period of time, which is why you can run Pc games at 75hz or whatever else your display supports.

Observe this FPS comparison applet:

http://frames-per-second.appspot.com/

The bottom ball moves at half the framerate of the top, yet at any given moment in time it is in the same horizontal position. The bottom ball has been "optimised" by moving in double pixel increments. (The faster FPS ball will seem to lead it a bit but that's because it is being updated more often).

It's it the same for optimised PAL games. And don't forget, it's not all downsides, the resolution difference is significant (assuming it is not just black borders)

If it's like the iOS/Android release, then they will have dropped both Michael Jackson songs, Wow, Bark at the Moon, Looking for the Perfect Beat, and Rockit. There might be more, but I remember those being the ones that definitely didn't make it over.

Has this been confirmed? It would be a bummer to play the game without those tracks.

Just because there's less frames doesn't mean it has to run slower.

Unoptimised 50Hz games as the ones like FFX, KH1 or DMC1 on PS2, where they're displaying the exact same frames as the 60Hz version but at a slower rate. A normal second of 60 frames is split up, so that only 50 frames would be displayed in that second and the remaining 10 would overlap into the next one. This goes on and on and on, ultimately resulting in the game running 16-17% slower than it would normally.

Optimising them for 50Hz means that there's no overlapping frames at all. If you compared the first and last frames of a second to the 60Hz version, they'd be exactly the same, the only difference is the number of frames between them. There's less frames between them but there's no slowdown, the amount of progression is exactly the same.

As for how they do this, as Graphics Horse pointed out, it depends how the games were designed. A lot of older games were designed to run at a specific framerate and any variance would fuck things up (animations, triggers, etc.). As far as I'm aware, the most common way of optimising those kind of games was simply to delete every sixth frame. It wasn't a very pretty solution but I guess it got the job done. Nowadays, most game engines are designed to take varying framerates into account, so optimising them is incredibly easy.

So yeah, I don't really care about 50Hz/60Hz differences so long as the game actually runs properly.

Is that theme actually mentioned anywhere on the store update or did someone just notice that it was there and free for PS+? Annoying that they add stuff without notifying us. :/

It wasn't mentioned in the Store update and the Plus updates haven't given out any information about free themes or avatars since the start of the IGC I think. So yeah, either someone notices in the Store or nobody knows a thing.

Bought Vice City last night (too many glasses of wine).

Dat bloooom! But i'm enjoying it so far. But maaan i keep moving the left stick to look around... :')

I see that Knytt Underground is on sale, but I haven't heard a peep about this game at all.

Has anyone here bought it, and if yes, how is it it?

It's amazing. Get through the first two chapters, which are basically tutorials, and the game completely opens up. There's some really great level design and platforming in it.

So I assume Dokuro's fixed now? I'm not touching it until I know for sure. Having to ring up Sony to get a discount on their own fuckup is so laughably stupid. Fucking SCEE.

I gave some initial impressions here, but as said above it really (REALLY) opens up in chapter 3 so give it to that point at least. It's like a Metroidvania, but it gives you virtually no information on what to do/where to go at all.

Need to get back to it actually.

Thought so, thanks. Irks me though, I pay my monies and I don't want to miss anything.

Curious it is mentioned on the Plus update blog post but not on the Store one.

I just finished it (damn those challenges), and yes, it's pretty good. The characters/writing is terrible but the platforming is fun.

Anyone else having trouble in recent weeks buying anything on the Playstation Store? It has forgotten my card information and refuses to accept it. I've confirmed with my bank that all of my info is correct.

The Playstation forums reveal that I'm not the only one with this problem. Anyone here have this or have a solution?
