PlayStation VR Thread 2: Reloaded

Played more Hitman VR today. Hitman VR and Firewall are some of the first games in VR that are causing me some sickness so I'm doing small sessions as I get used to it. Already have the controls down in Hitman and it's extremely fun.

I have A Fisherman's Tale, The Persistence, Farpoint, Blood & Truth, and I Expect You To Die as well, but haven't played them yet.

So, it's really a full new game for I Expect you to Die 2:

cool undercover talk by the devs:

Am I understanding it right that this will be multiplayer about impostors and a single agent? Among Ass and TTT influencing game design big time perhaps... or just good old Spy x Spy comics? One agent against other?

Exciting times, the original was one of made-for-VR first great games.

No Man's Sky VR patch for PS5 is available. 12 gigs. I installed it and played for some hours.

The resolution is much improved, I can now read everything and see far into the distance. It is at least at the full PSVR resolution, if not more. Only some effects seem to be lower resolution, like the white outline when selecting objects or reflections on water. Things like terrain, animals and structures look as sharp as Pro enhanced games.

I encountered a crash on a planet, but other than that it run smoothly.

NMS patch

no Pro, no BUY

no, I'm not buying a PS5, waiting for an idiot adapter just to play old PS4 VR games that should have had better resolution in the first place. my psvr will die with my Pro and my Pro can handle more than the base PS4.

12GB just for this?

if (platform == PS5)
resolution = 1080
else
resolution = 480;

fuck no. Fuck HG and Sony.

Have never played a Hitman game (I think I tried a demo of one several years ago) and I have a PSVR & PS4 Pro. Looking through the last couple of pages in here, I don't see many reactions to the game yet - surprisingly. What is the skinny?

One thing that I aways found strange about this game is that it made my Pro run very loud, something that never happened with games that played the same as on PS4, like Bloodborne and Driveclub flat. So maybe it was stressing the hardware someway? It is very demanding on PC VR as well...

Apart from the resolution boost, the largest improvement of playing No Man's Sky on PS5 is the total lack of noise from the machine (silent even with next gen games, like Demon's Souls Remake); I suppose the Pro could be considered more immersive, since it simulated a spaceship taking off. The loading is a bit better too.

I think I expressed my opinions in the Hitman threads.

to put it mildly, it's the single most impressive game on psvr ever. Doesn't hurt it's also one hell of a good game series that never fell under my radar until its VR announcement.

but I'm still not quite playing it: they really need add an option to turn off that hideous camera grid. And don't tell me to change my camera setup - that works great for any other ds4 or Move game - just for this: I saw one streamer who was using the camera low and he indeed he had no grid, but then suddenly he pulled some motion that triggered the grid again and there it rested until the end of the stream

I'm waiting for an update with a fix because it's really annoying, distracting and immersion-breaking

otherwise, as stellar AF as possible on PS4 VR - heard it's pretty crisp even on og PS4

Top 3 for me on PSVR. Definitely worth it. Ultra immersive even though it looks pretty goofy in videos.

NMS is now "playable" on psvr

except it's crashing like crazy

perhaps the silent cooler just isn't enough :messenger_tears_of_joy: is the coil whine loud?

The people who have coil whine can only hear it in a silent room with the volume down. Playing the games normally it is totally impossible to hear, even a nobreak is louder.

Wow on the nms news. There is no reason PS5 boost cannot provide much needed rendering resources for VR games. Go PSVR!

yeah, go psvr and bring us the missing VR mode in Dirt Rally 2, Project Cars 1, 2, 3, World of Tanks, Elite Dangerous, The Forest etc etc etc

NOT GONNA HAPPEN. because Sony is restricting it to legacy PS4 tech and if it can't run on PS4, it just won't

That’s true, it needs to be feasible all the way down to regular PS4

I'm still really mad at Sony for not allowing psvr at the very least for nextgen racing games on PS5. which is why I'm not buying a PS5 while they have no actual nextgen VR to show. Buying one so that a game with PS2 graphics runs with the resolution they first promised on the original NMS PSVR trailer? no, don't BS me

But otoh, this legacy mode got me thinking: will psvr2 run psvr1 games at all? They're legacy PS4 games using dated tracking and old psvr devkits. I fear unless they remaster some of those games, if ever psvr2 grows really popular, a large part of the game crowd will never play some of these pioneering games...

In the same vein that PS5 is backwards compatible with PS4 games, I expect PSVR2 to be backwards compatible with PSVR1 games. Big mistake if they don't.

Of course I don't expect it to work the other way around (PSVR2 games working with PSVR1 headset), just like PS5 games don't work on PS4.

anyway, was thoroughly enjoying The Persistence until getting some bad performance in the final battle on communication deck, namely mission 3, or the battle with the gravitron. With all those corpses piling up, it began stuttering and eventually crashed. And the bad news is that there are several reports of this being a real unsolved issue.

guess one solution would be to turn off VR during this part...

too bad, such a great game. But while I was enjoying the graphics improvements it got after they implemented flat mode, I guess in this part it was too overtaxing. I wonder how this runs on switch...

Yeah, PSVR and the accessories will work forever on PS5.

The question is, can psvr2 and the new accessories absorb and make psvr1 and its accessories redundant? I.e will games relying on e.g. the move controls work with entirely new controller tech?

I’m optimistic that will be the case. Even the DS5 with its lights surrounding the touchpad seem geared to be traceable by an inside out helmet cam.

I had some insomnia and played some more just now. You can see that it is using the 1080p display much better now.

I played Ace Combat 7 after just to compare. That one has better graphics, but in terms of pure resolution it seems about the same to me.

thanks for the impressions, you've sold me on it - except the grid issue is giving me pause, so I will probably cool on it for awhile. Sounds like a must-play however.

I don't think it really needs much talking - RE7 and Hitman Trilogy are some of the few AAA PS4 games running fully in VR. all the other ports are either old games (Skyrim) or half-baked VR modes (GTS, Ace Combat 7)

the grid is not there if you change put your camera lower and have enough space - distracting, should be an option to turn off. But otherwise, you can work around it

anyway, while that camera grid lasts in Hitman 3, I keep going through my backlog, still into The Persistence.

last time I got a crash after the huge battle on deck 3, but to my surprise, when I finally got there again, there was no battle nor crashes, I just needed to went through a door to complete mission 3. Finally on engineering deck.

the more I play it, the more I love it. Far less frustrating than in the beginning...

Any news on a new headset for PS5?

What resolution do you think PSVR2 will have?
It should be either 1440p or 4K. I hope it's 4K. Even if the heavier games don't run natively, it would reduce the screedoor effect. I also expect it to be HDR; it's a great boost to image quality for no extra performance cost.

Anyone tried Star Wars Squardons on PS5 PSVR?

Any benefits? Is it actually decent?

Really itching to give it a go after watching Mandalorian.

Might sub to EA Play for the ten hour trial. How long is it?

No but I've heard several sites mention Squardrons got a big benefit from PS5 PSVR in terms of resolution.

The game employs dynamic resolution and is often below native even on Pro. On PS5 it runs at the maximum resolution all the time.

finally on PS5 psvr with its PS3 tech can handle games with PS3 graphics as it should

I wish more devs would be as competent as IOI.

Are you talking about Star Wars Squadrons? That game looks basically the same in flat and VR, only the resolution was lower, so it is unfair to say it looks like a PS3 title.

Also, graphics settings are only part of what makes games look nice, since you have to take into consideration performance and image quality. PS3 games often had terrible performance, sub 30fps, screen tear, low resolution and bad AA. Something like Skyrim looks and runs much better on PSVR than it ever did on PS3.

Anyway, went to finally get back to NMS and it started downloading the damn update, so I waited

as expected, zero effect on Pro. doesn't really matters much to me, I've wasted almost 100 hours on it blurry as is.

what really annoys me is the overloaded HUD, so I often turn it off. But when you do it and try to scan around, you see horrible black rectangles everywhere. And they're still there, after so long :messenger_tears_of_joy:

a nice discussion about underdog games on psvr - none bad games at all, just for whatever reasons never got the recognition they deserved.

people who started VR with Alyx should really go after those games, at least those not exclusive to psvr

No Man's Sky was updated, adding the option to adopt animals and bug fixes. I played for 2 hours and it seems the crashes that happened when entering planets are gone. I need to play more to see if it is completely stable now, but so far it is certainly much improved and I finally can enjoy the sharp visuals on PS5.

Good to hear about the next VR kit, looks like it won't be wireless though

I don't think what's been said rules out a wireless option.

There's no doubt this will be a HMD that will be plugged in, but a wireless option for low bandwidth games like Beat Saber etc. still a possibility.

No doubt Gan Turismo 7 will require it to be plugged in with the the cable :messenger_winking: :messenger_grinning:

I am definitely disappointed to hear that the new unit won't be wireless, but it is certainly not a deal-breaker for me. I'm more excited to hear some actual news from the top that they are acknowledging a follow-up is positively in development, more so than feeling upset that it lacks an important feature that I'd like. On the tech side, I can understand their decision (keeps cost down considerably to be wired, keeps display and processing tech higher than it might be otherwise) but I still am kinda bummed about that fact. Anyway I am eagerly looking forward to see what they actually have to show, hopefully by E3 this year (I'm not gonna get my hopes up!). Still loving VR and PSVR is overall my favorite platform for VR gaming.

They did increase the resolution for ps5? I would jump into that again if true because on PS4 pro it was atrocious.
