PlayStation VR Thread 2: Reloaded

Hubris VR:

devs in the thread saying it's pc footage but enhanced version running on PS5 will be like that. PS4 of course will look like your run-of-the-mill untextured indie without shadows - very few devs can pull what IOI achieved in Hitman.

anyway, looks good and even got some action, not a plain walking simulator or puzzles. You see something alike in this, Farpoint, Solus Project, Eden Tomorrow and Robinson the Journey? Yeah, VR games that really take you away on a journey to another planet. Never done better than NMS. wish them luck...

Btw, hopefully this trend of PS5 enhancements come to the likes of GTS and Ace Combat 7 and the full game is playable in VR. unlikely, but all I wanted...

this is the best psvr "podcast":

All the psvr core fans are there, me included. fanboyism to the max after this week. Good, because since PS5 reveal psvr's near future was looking pretty bleak, yet it's having its best year ever, kicked off with Hitman...

For GTS you can forget it, but we will have GT7 in VR, possibly at launch (with all the content available this time :messenger_pouting:). Ace Combat 7 in full VR would be amazing, but it would not be feasible as an enhanced game, since it would need to run on the PS4 as well, which can't even hold 60fps at sub 1080p in flat; it's also very demanding on the Pro, making it run loud despite only being 1080p60 in flat. What would be feasible is a rerelease for PSVR2. I hope we get that, along with the VR modes we missed for games like Project Cars and Assetto Corsa.

The PS4 was a good console for flat games, since it has a good GPU and RAM, running most at 1080p with beautiful graphics, but the very weak CPU, even for 2013, meant they usually had to run at 30fps. It was never an ideal machine for VR and the fact we have a few great looking games like Hitman 3 is a merit to the developers. On the PS5, with it's good CPU, we are seeing most games run at 60fps, some at 120, so we can expect it to be a much more capable VR machine for it's generation than the PS4 was.

there's more psvr exclusives than I accounted for. This publication ranks them:

I agree Wipeout should be that high. I think it's very likely Hitman VR hits pc eventually - hopefully they finally add two hands tracked and translate that to Moves too...

Not including Driveclub VR because the online multiplayer no longer works is stupid, it has a perfectly functional career mode. And where is No Heroes Allowed VR? I wonder how many more exclusives slipped through their cracks now.

Grab your PS VR and Move controllers! A true, trailblazing made-for-VR action adventure is coming this summer! Fracked seamlessly combines fast paced, 1:1 run and cover gunplay with exhilarating free running, skiing and climbing that has never been seen before on VR.

the gameplay – it is fast, exhilarating, and accessible. Skiing, running, climbing, base jumping and ziplining are all possible and all happen seamlessly and fluidly. No on-rails gameplay and cinematic cutscenes here, everything is 1:1 and driven by the player’s controls, movements, and actions. Combat is unconstrained too, combining free movement for outflanking foes with 1:1 grabbable cover and tactile weapon reloading.

  • The game is getting PS5 enhancements! Those playing on PS5 can expect improved framerates, loading times and resolution. For those playing on PS4 and PS4 Pro, never fear, it looks incredible and plays the same.
  • We can assure you that it is a complete coincidence that the name sounds a lot like a popular/unpopular profanity.
We can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on it. Fracked will be launching this summer exclusively on PS VR. In the meantime, we’d love to hear what you think! Let us know in the comments below.

More info here:

Awesome. Now I just need that stupid adaptor to use my PSVR on my PS5.

dev of Mervils and Shadow Legend is a guest.

Shadow Legend is awesome, gets many things rights in terms of interactions and VR melee combat - it's like a nice preview into what Skyrim VR was supposed to be. And it's got some very decent levels, puzzles and even some vivid boss fights. But like most indies, it's over just as you're beginning to feel great - like, I got these awesome weapons (including a Kratos axe) and we don't get much chances to use them - though the memorable last boss fight did give me some good opportunities for varying them.

Well, his new scifi project is sadly not related, but they seem to be going for something with more exploration.

I have a feeling psvr2 will get a lot more support. On reddit lots of developers complained about the Move controllers, tracking system, and CPU. Even if sony just addresses those issues and everything else is a half step forward, it could lead to a wave of games from devs that otherwise wouldn't bother.
But I think we all know Sony will do more than a half step forward. I'm not expecting 4k 180fov but a large step up.

I’m not sure what the point of the PS5 camera is. The ps4 one with adapter does it all.
I'm hoping the PS5 camera will be usable with PSVR2 in the future, not for tracking, but to record/stream you while you're playing. If they somehow implement mixed reality VR functions into it, even better.

Are there any resolution/ light sensitivity differences between the two in terms of specifications?

Edit: Now saw that there is a resolution difference 720p to 1080p - hard to find specifications regarding aperture dimensions and sensor light specifications. The resolution difference in itself might make a difference for VR.

They’ve just announced the new controllers, and in turn confirmed inside out tracking on the headset. Facing the camera is a thing of the past gents.

Backwards compatibility with old psvr games makes me scratch my head. Not saying its impossible.
And why is that? I'm truly ignorant about the matter, not trying to be snarky here lol. I'm counting on being BC to play some PSVR 1 titles, like RE7, Astro, Farpoint and others. I thought BC was a giving, considering how many PSVR games they giving lately.

Psvr1 uses light based tracking and psvr2 looks to be inside and out, then you consider the additional patches just to get the analog support in.
Idk, I'm also not an expert but Move controller games working with inside and out controllers doesn't seem easy to convert.

Good thinking! Though I'm not an expert either, I think all the tracking stuff is being made by the system and not on a game basis. At least that's what I hope haha

As long as the new controllers have sufficient buttons it should be seamlessly BC. The hardware is abstracted through api’s

I'm more curious about how the psvr2 will understand a game based around light tracking without a patch.
I would say they could just translate the data in a insignificant amount of time... to something the PS4 VR understands... but then I remembered ordering a dongle for a PS4 camera when a perfectly decent 2 lense PS5 camera is on the shelf.

How it’s tracked is irrelevant, the game only cares about position which is fed to it from the system. What I want to know is if the DS5 is trackable by the headset so DS4 vr games come across seamlessly without needing the PS4 camera and a DS4.

Also what about the aim controller and my beloved Firewall Zero Hour?

Action buttons / analog sticks: The Left controller contains one analog stick, the triangle and square buttons, a “grip” button (L1), trigger button (L2) and Create button. The Right controller contains one analog stick, the cross and circle buttons, a “grip” button (R1), trigger button (R2) and Options button. The “grip” button can be used to pick up in-game objects, as one example.

All DSense buttons and analog accounted for. this has potential for use in non VR games. I hope developers experiment with this and offer modes that use it. like a flight stick in Ace Combat .

Any other ideas ?

Hm. There's a thread on psvr reddit now and most seem to think the opposite. I'm hoping you're right instead.

Not all buttons though, it lacks a d-pad for games that control best with a d-pad like Tetris Effect, but I guess the DualSense should work for those.

I'm playing Shadow Legend, trying to make it last. Very good game and we'll optimized for PSVR.

Small random anecdote: Back in E3 2017, before I had any real interest in VR I saw Moss' trailer for the first time. It was love at first sight and I wanted to play it so bad, but I was lamenting the fact that it was a VR-only game. Somehow at the end of the same year I ended up with my own PSVR. (no, it wasn't because of Moss or any game in particular, I don't even really remember, I think I just saw a chance and took it.)

Really want to dive into VR on my PS5, but I don't suppose there's much point in buying the old PSVR until the next gen version finally drops. I was hoping it would be this year but evidently not.
