Plume, who had over 1 billion connected devices in 2021, so who knows how much more now in 2022, has come out with a new report regarding the mindshare of video game companies/brands based on connected devices.
Arguably the most important finding in the report is that Steam is quickly gaining mindshare. It has entered with new popularity unlike from last years report which may be an indication that PC gaming adoption is growing much better than expected.
In terms of percentage Nintendo is at the top with 41.3%, followed by Microsoft at 38.2%, Sony at 19.7%, and newcomer Steam for 2022 at .6%
According to the report last year Microsoft and Nintendo were flipped, I suspect that change from first to second place may have been due to a dry year in terms of major releases at Microsoft but that's just speculation.
Another interesting thing from the report is gaming usage. Aside from Nintendo (600MB) user of the other consoles use on average more than 1.2GB per day.
However, Steam users top the data usage charts per user at 9.2GB which is a chasm sized discrepancy. That's a lot of data! It seems Steam has a lot more engagement going on despite it's current placement. The quote at the bottom of the article makes the implication that Steam could be a potential disrupter in the future breaking the current Triopoly.
Key findings from the report include:
“Our latest Plume IQ study reveals some fascinating changes, and possible disruption, in the game console market,” said David Huynh, Chief Product Officer at Plume. “In a reversal of our first study in April 2019, Nintendo now leads Microsoft in game console popularity, however, more notable is Steam’s entry into what has been a very established triopoly, with the new platform starting to take market share and its users topping the data usage charts.”
- Deployments of new game consoles are slowing: since the onset of the pandemic, there has been a slowdown in the number of game consoles from the leading brands introduced to Plume-powered homes. This may be due to component supply issues, but could also be related to the fact that few new game consoles have been introduced to refresh the market.
- Nintendo claims the top spot for popularity: when it comes to game console ownership, Nintendo (41.3 per cent) leads Microsoft (38.2 per cent), flipping their respective positions from Plume’s April 2019 study.
