Pokémon Go |OT 3| "No Officer, I'm a Passenger"

Dragonite and Gyarados are so easy to take down it's ridicolous.

Yeah those CP numbers always refrained me from battling gyms, until I found out how gym battling works, and now it's just too easy. Any Wigglytuff with a fairy type charge move can take out a Dragonite, as long as it's about half the CP of the Dragonite.

Electabuzz and Jolteon can easily waste a Gyarados or two. The only pokemon that can keep me from fighting a gym is Blissey. What a pain that one is, and only because of the time out. Does Niantic even playtest these things? Makes you wonder why there's a timer in the first place.

If it doesn't have high CP, it won't be in gyms. It's as simple as that. The moveset, weaknesses, and overall combat of Pokémon have negligible effect when it comes to placing.

This has been a big flaw of the game since day one. Many Pokémon will simply never be on defense. Blissey, Snorlax, Rhydon, Dragonite, Gyarados, and Tyranitar will continue to rule the game.

Or more precisely put: functionally every single player can obtain a high-level Vaporeon with relatively little effort. Having at least as much CP as Vaporeon becomes the baseline to get into gyms. Seven Pokemon fill that criteria: Vaporeon, Rhydon, Dragonite, Blissey, Snorlax, Tyranitar, Gyarados.

Everything else is entirely irrelevant as a defender in any reasonably competitive area. It's just not going to get a space in a gym; it will always be at the bottom then gets pushed out really easily when it hits the bottom spot of a lv10 gym.

That then shapes all of the other positions. The best prestigers are Machamp for Blissey, Snorlax, and Tyranitar, Piloswine for Dragonite, Lanturn against Gyarados, Meganium against Rhydon and Vaporeon. Ursaring, Magneton, and Victreebel are cheap replacements for Machamp, Lantern, and Meganium respectively because they're much easier to get more or less regardless of where you live, and so you can have them at a range of CPs to best get juice out of prestiging.

Attacking is pretty irrelevant, to be honest - any reasonably strong Pokemon with high CP will do what you want. If you're concerned with time, then you just want Machamp for Blissey, Snorlax, and Tyranitar, Jolteon for Gyarados, Exeggutor for Vaporeon, Vaporeon for Rhydon, and your slightly stronger Dragonite against their Dragonite. Ursaring and Victreebel are the easiest replacements for Machamp and Exeggutor, the others are pretty common.

If you are concerned about potion supply, then you want Cloyster for their Dragonite, Blissey, and Snorlax, Dragonite for their Vaporeon, Feraligatr for their Rhydon, Jolteon for their Gyarados, and Steelix for their Tyranitar. Vaporeon is the best common Feraligatr and Steelix replacement.

It can be useful to have Umbreon as an all-purpose prestiger, and Alakazam and Gengar as all-purpose fast attackers. There's a few Pokemon like Omastar that is better than Vaporeon as a potion-efficient attacker but not as good as the best such as Feraligatr which are worth it if you have them; but by the time you have most of them you'll normally have the best one so I've left them out. But really, the pool of usable Pokemon is vanishingly small.

omg how

I mean I live in a desert, I understand why I don't have a Gyarados yet but man lol. Also thanks to this thread I am no longer afraid of Blissey!

I used my Exeggutor and Charizard to take one down today, (Solar Beam/Overheat). I was also surprised at how easily my 19xx Lapras defeated a 3000+ Dragonite.

It's thanks to where I work. My work is next to a pond, so I get a few water sources there (+ Dratinis!). I also have been recently going to a local shopping area by my work which is a huge source of water Pokemon. So since like December I've really been going a little overboard with catching Magikarps. I have 4 Dragonites now due to this as well.

Heck, in November I had only 2 Gyarados. Funny that I now have 11 (I caught 2), with enough candy to already get my 12th.

after searching and being patient for a long while, finally got a larvitar with good iv (86%) and spent some precious candy to get it to tyranitar...

best moveset, very happy with this.

Accidentally transferred another one my best Pokemon which I forgot to favourite, a 90+ IV Tyrogue with Defense as best stat, at least it wasn't a Hitmontop. There needs to be a 24 hour limit or so to transfer them back from the Professor.

I would have thought this if pineapple berries didn't exist. I think I would get it past 3k in less than a month
Man wish I had mountain biomes. It's kind of ridiculous that two of the best Pokemon (Dragonite, Tyranitar) live in the same area. I think Chansey/Blissey is mountain/desert too?

yeah (I live in a hilly region of Los angeles)... when it was just gen 1 I would get chansey on almost a weekly basis at my house...not even searching they were just in nearby. the only thing for dragonite is to get dratini you have to go to the beach so I used to head out there every weekend. larvitar spawns "regularly" out here, as in they are not impossible to find and I walk around with a pupitar as a buddy.

Wish I got more Pinap berries. Here is my current makeup of berries:

Razz: 187
Nanab: 69
Pinap: 6...

Really wish I could trade them out. Really don't need Nanab berry that much. Usually better to use a Razz and wait for the Pokemon to calm down. I should start using both of those more often.

I just get rid of the other ones, also get rid of regular pokeballs, and regular potions since I only have 400 item space...Have to micromanage diligently.

Cloyster decimates Dragonite too and has such a low max CP, very easy to prestige....Underrated usefulness
Granbull also has been surprisingly useful to me with Bite and Play Rough.

Hatched a Mantine from a 10K egg...after catching one in the wild a few days before.

Randomly yesterday at comic con i spun a stop and got a Kings Rock! So that's the second item I've gotten since the initial launch ;-;
But it made for a shiny new Slowking.

Now that you said it: I really hope it won't take too long until they implement shinies into the game.

Why don't you delete those Nanab berries?

I'm living at the foot of some serious hills but I don't get any mountain biome action. Maybe I need to fidget around with the open Street map stuff.

But it does feel good to claim the gym right at the top of the hill, even if it's impossible to hold for long.

Granbull serves me well against a large variety of otherwise good defenders including Espeon,Exeggutor, and Dragonite...It's pretty versatile.

Weekend highlights:

Finally hatched my first Igglybuff while bar crawling in downtown on Friday. I spun a LOT of stops and still no evo items. Can't catch a break with these...

Went out Sunday and bagged a Pupitar and Hitmontop back to back, down the street from each other. The Tar line is now done and I saved myself having to hatch another Tyrogue.

Togepi
Ampharos
Politoed
Sunflora
Unown
Steelix
Shuckle
Heracross
Corsola
Kingdra
Porygon2

I've got a ton of 2k eggs, fingers crossed Togepi is one of them. Ampharos will be a while, Mareeps don't show up here often at all. Larvitars are more common. Shuckle does not exist here, waiting on a nest roation for him.

I'm gonna be down to Unown + evo item mons before I know it. There's been 3 confirmed Unowns in my area, 2 of which have shown up between 3 and 4 AM.

I wish you could trade in the evo items for coins or dust or something. I'm pretty quickly getting to the point where the evo items have almost no value for me. Given how rare they are, I don't think that would be abusable.

Got a second Kings Rock today so I now have a Politoad and 70 Johto Pokemon. Got it at 21h47, so that is within a 5m window of the one I got on Friday but it was from a stop far away from that one.

I managed to hatch a Mareep today, but I'm still drowning in Pineco eggs.

I haven't hatched a single Pineco lol, I actually want one because I've only found a single wild one and want a Forretress.

10km eggs since gen 2 have been 3 Larvitar, 2 Dratini, 1 Mareep and 1 Gligar.

Went to the park yesterday with 50 pinaps and 50 ultra balls and caught about 30 totodiles... none of them are above 80% though :-(

Tempted to just evolve a Feraligator anyway, are they of any use at all?
I never use any of the gen 1 starter evos.

Caught a misdreavus, 2k eggs are essentially worthless to me now. Anyway on 53 Jhoto pokemon and have also evolved my grimer to muk. The only non-regional exclusive pokemon I am missing from gen I is Dragonair, which I could get right now but saving up more candy to get dragonite since the dragonite that I caught had shit IVs.

He's another useless water type at the moment.

Honestly, IVs only matter for the big defenders as that will dictate how high their max cp will go. Attackers and prestigers just need to get to "good enough" cp. The difference between your 50% Vape and 100% Vape on offense is maybe 1 or 2 taps and a regular potion's worth of HP.

Yeah, hence why I've stopped worrying about IVs. If it's above 70% I'll evolve it.

IVs really only matter for the big defenders. And even then, a 60% IV Pokemon is still fine.

Case in point:
I have a 70% Dragonite at over 3000 cp and my highest CP Pokemon is a 3210 CP Dragonite that is only 200 cp above it and is only 3 levels higher too. So, there isn't much of a difference. It can be good to have, but it's not as important

Swampert's gonna be swole when he comes out. Believe in Mudkip!

I just pay attention to the appraisal, generally I'll hold onto anything "Wonder" or "Certainly caught my attention." I'm too lazy/nervous about logging in somewhere to get exact stats.

I don't really mind, I actually think it's stupid that we can't check IVs, always hated them in the mainline games and hate them here too. In fact they should offer an option to log in on an official site and be able to check all of your Pokémon and your stats.

Will PGNexus ever work again? Seems like they're not bothering :(

Sorry for the double post, this just in:

Trainers,

Pokémon GO is in the process of being updated to version 0.59.1 for Android and 1.29.1 for iOS devices. Below are some release notes and comments from our development team.
The 7-day ‘First PokéStop of the Day’ streak will now award a random Evolution item.
Minor text fixes.
—The Pokémon GO team

So basically they will be doing what should have been there in the first place lol.

Oh thank god. That way I don't actually have to figure out what the actual system is.

Caught a Pupitar. With one Larvitar hatched and this Pupitar caught I have 19 candies. Well on my way to a Tyranitar woo!

Walking a Mareep around right now for an Ampharos, have like 67 candies.

Cool. Should we start trashing our extras then? Got 3 Up-Grades and exactly zero Porygons lol.

If it's just screenshots that sounds safe, had no idea something like this existed. May check it out.
Poké Genie is pretty good. Like any calculator it has some limitations (you'll occasionally run into a Pokémon whose possible stats can't be narrowed down to a usable range, but it's pretty rare after you punch in the appraisals - usually it'll narrow down to the exact stats), but it's as fully featured as you could expect. If you upgrade to Pro you can automatically batch import screenshots, and both free and paid versions let you automatically delete all imported screenshots from your photo app. It also has moveset evaluation, merging of scans, and various other niceties.
