Pokémon Go |OT 3| "No Officer, I'm a Passenger"

What a disaster. As someone who basically checked out on this game a few weeks ago, I was really looking forward to this weekend. Hype bubble burst yet again.

I hope they're smart enough to just release the planned legendary anyway. That was the main pull of this...the community is gonna have a meltdown otherwise.

Spent quite some time playing today, hope it made a difference for the global counters. Got a bit of candy to power up Vaporeon twice more, Flareon once, Donphan twice, Golem once and reached 300 Candy for a second Gyriados. Going to need a lot more because while the IV are high, it is a level 20 one.

I have no idea when the bonus will become active though, that is going to be interesting. Same for the legendary. I at least have a gigantic dose of healing material to fix up the victims.

I'm not even sure how you handle this kind of problem. They could have setup WiFi, but even then with that many people accessing simultaneously with non-stop data transmissions, that shit buckles fast. I mean, at my university, in one of the larger classes I'd have the WiFi would be virtually inaccessible if you weren't one of the first couple hundred on, and my school doesn't exactly have a poor net/wireless infrastructure. (Tens of?) Thousands of people on a relatively small number of nodes? Still gonna be pretty rough.

They've extended the event to cover a 2 miles radius surrounding Grant Park AND the event Pokemon will continue to spawn until Monday morning.

That ought to satisfy everyone, I'd hope.

Cell towers would help to boost signal strength.

Smaller signal repeaters, like the cell providers are doing now.

There are definitely things that you can do if you prepare properly. Stadiums and stuff have wifi networks and most hold much more than 20k people.

So, I feel Niantic is just a bunch of people who really don't get how the real world works, with all their decisions on events, gyms, etc. Go Fest really hasn't helped with my impression of them.

Right, but the difference is all of the tens of thousands of people aren't simultaneously transmitting data non-stop for hours. And even then, when I've gone to similarly sized concerts, the reception is still always shit.

I know there's more they can do, I just feel like the whole concept is kinda doomed to be shit to begin with.

So it actually worked out pretty well for everyone in attendance. Free Legendary, free $100 in-game money, and refunded ticket price. Plus I read Unown and Heracross spawned in the park. The only people who got screwed were those who paid for tickets on the secondary market. Do they even get the $20 back, or does that go to the scalpers who sold them their tickets?

They don't even have to catch it? How boring. Trying to prevent a riot I guess.

There is no way you could even try to catch it if you wanted to.

Here is my status update:

My family decided to make a Chicago weekend of this while thing. With my 6 year old and I going to GO fest.

My son and I went down my phone is on ATT couldn't log in couldn't check in.

We went back to the hotel, my wife is on T-mobile so I took her phone, went back checked in, tried to do a raid errors. I walked around hit some of the special pokestops. The special 2K eggs are apparently just any Pokémon inside. I caught a heracross. The park is an Abra nest so I had something to use my pinapps and ultra balls that I stocked up on leading up to GO fest.

Constant network errors and app crashes. Each lounge is a gym and has a special corresponding gym badge. I couldn't spin the instinct and mystic gyms because of the errors.

I headed out and saw a unown on the radar went and got it. I headed back to the hotel caught 5 more unown on the way back.

I just did a quilqva raid with 20 people we're desperate.

Over heard someone at the information booth handing out the Niantic support URL and telling people that if they checked in through the game they would get the $100 in coins. They would have to submit to Niantic about buying tickets from a third party.

Unless of course you spent thousands more on airfare and lodging.

Me, my wife and 2 kids took the train down have a hotel room and that's $350 right there but we were going to make it a Chicago weekend so it's OK.

I was talking to a couple who flew in from Florida last night and are leaving tomorrow morning. So two plane tickets and a two night stay. They were also on ATT, they said they had caught four Pokémon the brief times they were able to log in.

Got Heracross and Unown and Lugia will be coming so I guess I'm satisfied.
Unown are, like, common in that 2 mile radius around the park now so I'll probably load up on them before flying out tomorrow night!

So when Lugia starts appearing in raid battles will it be a limited time thing? I haven't done a raid battle(haven't been playing the game all that much recently), but I would sure like a crack at catching Lugia.

It really is disappointing how this whole thing turned out. Maybe Niantic should step back from big events like this and maybe push for more online focused events and maybe spread out location specific ones? I feel like there would need to be a lot more going on to warrant a "festival" for Pokémon Go

Yessssssss!!!

Yup. Bonuses are live. Increased spawns. Double everything. Reduced egg and buddy distances.

But it looks like only eggs incubated after the start of the event get the reduction. Got a 5km in from this morning that is now at 2.1km walked and it hadn't hatched.

I've only been loosely paying attention to the event details, being in country Australia and not seeing anything fun in the wild. I'm not complaining though because the shortened egg timers and double candy is still pretty nice. Can anyone tell me how long it's supposed to last for? A couple of posts suggest it's been extended but I'm not sure what 'Monday' will translate to here.

According to Kotaku the double candy & reduced egg timers etc should last until Monday, July 24, at 5:00 P.M. PDT
