Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum have the best OST

RSE's music reigns supreme now and always, but DPP's was still solid work. After that it fell off a cliff and hasn't recovered, remakes notwithstanding.

You say this right after someone posted the B2W2 Rival Battle masterpiece.

I'd say DPP had a certain feeling to its msuic that fit it's environment for sure, but if i were to rate them, Gen 3 > 1 > 2 > 4 > 5 > 6

I think it was just the age that I was when I played RSE, was the first time I actually got REALLY into pokemon. But even going back, I'd say that there's a certain atmosphere to RSE music that really fits into it's main story and legendary stories.

Examples:

The Regi-Cave music https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRz0f1zwMe0 - The music was kind of eerie, but gave you a sense that each cave had some secret it was holding. Bonus: It also made me go out of my way to go to a library and find out about braille haha

And then when you fight them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00fY1guhC_0 - It's not a very exciting or upbeat theme, but it sort of fits into the idea that they are very rigid golems.

The Legendary battle song is also pretty great: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HUaLZyBNeY - These are pokemon that rule the land, sea and air, and the small bits of stories in the game lead up to waking up these acient pokemon. I'd argue that the legendary songs in DPP sound very messy, where are this one has a theme that it follows pretty well.

Now, this last one probably isnt fair since it's only in ORAS, but the soaring theme definitely hit that feeling right on taget: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNoucJrsw9Y

But opinions and all :p

Best Pokemon soundtrack or best video game OST in general? I remember there being a couple tracks I liked from Diamond/pearl, but I can't remember which ones. However, Pokemon music in general makes me irk. I never liked it much.

Platinum is my favorite game of the series, didn't expect to play it this much even though I already played Diamond but damn.
The music, the atmosphere of the region... Everything was perfect.

I wouldn't say it's my #1 favorite (it's got tough competition after all), but it is definitely a beautiful OST. The night themes are the my favorites.

I remember turning on my Diamond game back in the day just to listen to the Pokemon Center theme at night. So relaxing.

I can't disagree, even if I prefer Gen 5's soundtrack myself (which had a very experimental soundtrack, but one that worked wonderfully).

The thing about Gen 4 and Sinnoh is that every part of it comes together perfectly. The music fits the region (those route themes, hhngggh), and the region fits the lore. When the region also happens to be (perhaps) the best Pokémon region to explore yet, then you have a very strong cohesive adventure (whose faults come mostly from technical issues rather than world design).

Personally DPPt is my least favourite generation in almost every aspect, including its soundtrack. I was not really a fan of most of the compositions nor the soundfont they went with. I do enjoy the Champion battle music, and the music against Dialga/Palkia, but not much else.

In my opinion BW/2 has the best soundtrack of the franchise due to the compositions themselves and the fact Game Freak tried new things with it (low health music, gym leader sending out final Pokémon etc).

Sinnoh has some amazing route music. Actually, I think Sinnoh has the best route music of the games.

I think Hoenn has the best town themes, though.

Johto has the best battle themes. Although Unova's are good as well.

I have a hard time judging Kanto because nostalgia gets in the way.

Sinnoh wins for best legendary theme though. Hands down.

I have a hard time judging gen 4 ost because it's not exactly fresh on my mind, but there are definitely some memorable tracks, like Giratina's theme from Platinum and Cynthia's theme with that amazing intro.

I usually have trouble choosing stuff like this and my opinion tends to vary a lot, but right now I'd say gen 5 has the best ost.
Some of my favorite tracks are:
Battle with team plasma
Route 10(the true best route them in the series :P)

and pretty much any theme related to N:
N's castle,
N's battle theme,
ending with the glorious N's castle bridge.

100% AGREE.

There's a feeling of sentimentality and longing that is not even present in other Pokémon games. Diamond/Pearl/Platinum felt the most like a journey. This is enforced by Day/Night music switches.

Man I really wish they still did Day/Night music switches. That did SO much to enhance the atmosphere.

DPPt music is indeed wonderful. If I really had to choose my favorite OST in the series I'd have to give the nod to BW2, but DPPt is behind it by only a hair. So many nice tracks I'll still listen to every now and again. Eterna Forest is a personal favorite.

XY were so disappointing in regards to soundtrack (and a lot of other things). Only Pokemon OST I don't like.

Disagree. I think Gen IV had one of the worst OST's in the series. It had few highlights and everything sounded really plain. It didn't help that the sound font they used wasn't really a good one. Like a small step up from GBA.

Gen V on the other hand? So many well composed tracks and it sounds amazing for the DS hardware. Best OST in the series to me.

While Diamond/Pearl/Platinum didn't impress me too much with its battle themes, the music for the world itself couldn't have been any better. All of the Route themes were just how they should be and are easily the best in the series, and the City/Town music never missed a beat either.

Diamond/Pearl/Platinum's world was a joy to explore and travel through.

Listen to this shit. Route 216.

Love Diamond/Pearl/Platinum's focus on jazz. At the postgame especially. Route 228 (Day and Night).

And I mentioned sentimentality in the world and music before as well. I think it's best exemplified by the Pokémon League music. You get to where your journey will end, and this is what you're greeted with (Day and Night).

This man speaks the truth. Also, Gen 5 has the best ending theme

Something something Gen 5.

But Gen 4 ain't bad, though like with Gen 3 I felt like its soundfont held it back a bit (though not so heavily as gen 3) and that when inevitable remakes surface for Sinnoh the soundtrack can be done greater justice.

Then again I thought that about Gen 3 and Omega Ruby underwhelmed in that regard, hopefully they can pick back up since I feel there's been a noticeable musical drop off since Gen 6 started in my opinion at least.

Just gonna let the anime get my hopes up for that revamped Gen 4 music...

If ORAS is any indication, I only see the remake making the music much worse. Certainly not looking forward to Game Freak's remake of DPPt. I think they've gotten considerably worse after BW2.

And you left out Twinleaf Town's theme from the anime. I feel like this encapsulates the feeling of Sinnoh perfectly.

Whoops, I knew there was another I meant to add, it's so pleasantly home like.

Yeah ORAS didn't do much for me at all on the remade music front, except for the Volcanic Ash route

Gen IV is probably my least played gen, but yeah, I think I rank more of its music pretty high when compared to other gens.

All pokemon games have a pretty strong soundtrack in general, but compared to the rest I think DPPt has the weakest. It certainly doesn't help that HGSS, one of the GOAT pokemon soundtracks, was from the same generation.

Here are the few songs from Sinnoh I do like though:
Lake Theme
Looker's Theme
Pokemon Center (night) <<<The chillest theme ever, they need to bring this back
Eterna Forest
Route 209
Team Galactic HQ
Route 216
Giratina Battle Theme
Lake Spirit Battle Theme

So I guess still a lot of songs I like, but that's pretty much it, everything else just okay or bad. With pretty much every other game in the series (except maybe XY), I feel like I could list almost the entire soundtrack as stuff I really like. Plus definitely not enough good battle themes in gen 4. :/

Edit: I completely forgot Mt. Coronet had a theme. Okay, that one's good too.

How can you not post the Game corner music?

♪ └༼ຈل͜ຈ༽┐♫ Dance Riot ♪ └༼ຈل͜ຈ༽┐♫

That's...surprising.

Gen 4's good tracks are the ones that are rarely used: Distortion World, Giratina Battle, Cynthia Encounter, PI Encounter, Rival Battle. The rest are about as painfully slow as the games themselves. Also not the biggest fan of the Frontier Brain remix, it just feels cluttered compared to its predecessor and successor.

Gen 5 however? Gen 5 has probably the highest amount of good tracks in the series and I love the music in 1 through 3.
Black City
Driftveil City
Nimbasa City
Aspertia City
Route 10
Team Plasma Battle
Castle Bridge (why is this used for ~25 steps)
Last Pokemon
N's Castle
Neo Team Plasma Battle
Team Plasma, Again
Colress Battle
Black/White Kyurem Battle
DENNIS 2: RETURN OF DENNIS
Route 23 (Well aware what song from what game this is based on)
PWT Final Battle
Ending

2 = 5 > 3 > 6 > 1 > 4 in my opinion.

I just couldn't stand the bass and instruments in Gen 4 but I don't think the music was bad. I really liked the music towards the end of the game, like the Cyrus battle theme, Dialga/Palkia music, and the other legendary music. I also just noticed Gen 4 was the only gen after 3 that didn't have a unique Elite 4 battle theme.

Gen 2 and Gen 5 have my favorite battle themes. A good mix of happy and dark music.

Definitely agree. I love how jazzy it is compared to the other Gens

Gen III is definitely my least favorite. ORAS made me realize that my issue with RSE's OST wasn't the GBA soundfont: It's that the compositions are fucking boring.
