I'll be interviewing Bernie Sanders in about 5 hours. Any good questions?

woah wtf

Ask him how feels about a federal job guarantee, especially after CAP just made it one of their new policies. I imagine it's not too different from his idea of a new WPA but I'd be interested to hear what he thinks on it anyways.

I was actually going to ask about whether he'd prefer the basic income or a federal job guarantee! It's a dividing line between 'new' and 'old' socialism and I wanted to see what side of the line he falls on. Great minds think alike, though.

I just spend about 20 minutes in the #MarchForTruth hashtag and there are so many fucking morons talking about emails and Benghazi and DNC murders and George Soros.

No faster way to extinguish your optimism than come face to face with even one of these people.

"People."

I honestly believe most of them are bots, tbh.

Is your interview going to be posted anywhere online?

Probably. I'm not the one doing that, though. He's giving a talk and a small group of people get to do a Q&A session. I have three questions allocated.

A comforting thought, sure, but I can't just shrug and say "well, they're probably fake accounts." It's too convenient of an exit from my anxiety.

Also, Crab, would you ask Bernie Sanders what role he plans to take in ensuing elections on both a state and federal level? The new era of politics seems to cross state lines like never before. Special elections for house seats are maintaining national attention and people like me now make recurring donations to political figures all over the country. I feel there is a great opportunity for somebody like Bernie Sanders to push purple states back left by becoming a player in their campaigns.

Maybe something about isolationism's value not just in terms of local economies, but in terms of trade acting as a boost to international peacekeeping.

Can do. I had a similar question but I like this way of asking it more, so thanks!

There's an interesting question somewhere here, but it needs refining, I think.

This is actually a good question

Ask him which of his 3 houses he prefers.

The serious question I would ask him is how much does he think a politician's positions and role should change in response to not only a changing nation, but also the arc of their own career.

Honestly trade is the issue I disagree with him the most on but my suggestions on that topic would be more direct like "given that the current manufacturing economy in the US is experiencing something like a 30 year high point, do you maintain that international trade is the primary driver of manufacturing job losses within the US? The US hardly seems noncompetitive in manufacturing if its industry is doing so well"

But that's probably more involved and more abrasive than would fly in an interview

Where will we be able to see/read the interview? Can you say without jeopardizing your identity? I don't know if that's even a concern, but I assume you err on the side of caution.

gotta write another fanfic for us

I had a big one I was going to post when Trump lost the election. After that didn't happen, it kind of made me sick and I asked for my Hair Mouse tag to be removed. I sort of regret that. It felt right at the time, but truthfully, I was proud to have had it. It was the first time my writing had ever gotten me "recognition", however small.

I will complete and release what I was working on. But I need to see power shift back left first. Until then, it doesn't feel like the right time for such dark comedy. I have a hard time making light of Trump right now because he dramatically endangers so many people.

When things are a little better, Hair Mouse will return in a big way. I'm actually really proud of that story. I have a lot written that I didn't fully share here and have other ideas and material to work with.

It's nice that you remember that, though. I often wonder how many people do.

Serious suggestion: "Do you worry that opposition to free trade deals, which play an important part in the economies of several countries we consider allies, could have larger diplomatic implications? That the United States does not want to "play ball" on the global stage, so to speak?"

My guess is that he'll argue that MNCs are actually damaging to many developing economies and the turtle model followed by South Korea and Taiwan is a more advantageous model, meaning the US can within reason protect their workers without damaging foreign relations, but I can try.

What's the turtle model? (you never did make an Economics |OT|)

Sure, and honestly its your interview, if you have a slightly different trade angle you'd like to try I'm really curious to see what it would be and how it would turn out

Does "turtle model" refer to using protectionist policies until an industry is sufficiently large enough to be competitive on the global market? I know a bit about South Korean development but I've never heard the term before.

"Confederate Flags are now popping up all over rural areas in the United States, even in Union States like Michigan, West Virginia, and Iowa. The UK just voted to leave the EU on a campaign primarily based on Xenophobia, w/ both major parties refusing to oppose the results of referendum. In both countries, we're seeing young people radicalized and a resurgence of blatant white supremacists, anti-antisemitism, and worse.

In the UK, we've seen Labour bow to the Brexit referendum rather than oppose it. In the US, we've seen Trump voters upset that "their" benefits would be cut, instead of just "those people's." How would you respond to those who fear that a more rural-heavy coalition would lead to the same sorts of exclusionary compromises that excluded Black people from the New Deal?"

Christ, that Macron. That man really seems to know when to go for other leaders' jugular. He's just ready to leap at every international scandal and take advantage of it, grabbing headlines after every Trump roast.

He's barely been president for 3 fucking weeks. Trump fucking wishes he had that kind of instinct with his international image.

As that number goes down more, things are going to get nuts.

It's gonna be bad, people.

Yeah. I think as Trump continues to see that he'll never be liked by more than half the country, he'll just keep doubling down more and more on the base. Stuff that happened because of worries about image like Sessions recusing himself may not happen.

I remember too! <3 Looking forward to see what you write next, your style is so engrossing to read.

How does he defend using demonstrably false revenue projections to pay for his free college plan?

Does he still believe that southern Democrats are less important as voters than people from new england?

When does he anticipate finally upending the establishment organizations which stood in his way, such as planned Parenthood?

Why did he waste three months running a dead end campaign he couldn't possibly win?

Does he consider abortion rights a more acceptable issue for Democrats to compromise on than other issues?

Does he regret selling out the labor and environmental movements to score points with America's anti-trade minority?

Do you think future Democratic candidates should follow your model of relying on the regressive payroll tax for new revenues?

The questions I would want to ask at least. YMMV

Also his opinion on Antifa and if he knows what the alt right is.

kirblar's question is good too. What does he think can be done to solidify democratic socialism as a popular concept in the US and how does he feel people in his wing can bridge the gap with minorities and others concerned about civil rights who have doubts about his focus?
