Some more story from AP.

I really don't get how verifying voter registrations is a bad thing.

Scenario:

Your voter registration says you're "Bill S. Preston Esq." and your driving license says "William S Preston Esq." and they use the driving license records to validate your voter reg.

They do not match identically and therefore your voter registration gets invalidated and you just lost your vote.

Sucks huh?

I'm sorry but who would register their nickname instead of their legal name?

It's like Richard writing down Dick.

Ouch.

I remember I couldn't get my driver's license yet because my name on my SS card didn't match my birth certificate (my SS card didn't have my middle initial). It's a common mistake but it was enough to delay my license a few weeks or so. I had to go to the SS office and get a new fuckin SS card, which took forever.

If they use the same kind of shit with voting, fuckin aye!

but hasn't early voting in Ohio started already?

I doubt there's enough time to inform everyone of the new "rules"

Some people do. That's just what happens with things like this.

And you would think it shouldn't matter, but nope...

I'm sure there'll be a process put in and they'll be run through just for blatant false ones, it's a Democrat commissioner and governor anyways.

Besides, we're not trusting Ohio to begin with.

watching Hannity and Colmes has been so entertaining recently. Hannity is so out of touch with what is really going on and is acting extra pissy.

GOP fear-mongering at work, kids.
So they decide to spring this 3 weeks before the election?

Well, hopefully Ohio won't be needed for a win anyway.

But their is no way to solve that. I can't relate because of my name but when ever I am filling out an official document I use my birth name.

I know it sucks but if you can't figure out how to fill your name on a legal document then you probably shouldn't vote.

Then again this wouldn't be a problem if their was same day registration.

wont this work for both Republican and Democrat voters though? So shit would tend to even out?

Except it's the Republicans that are going to suffer from the overwhelming numbers of new voters, therefore it's the Republicans who will be challenging every single registration they can. Less likely for the Democrats to do so, creating an inbalance.

Oh, and this is so very over. Unless something incredibly huge and shocking happens in three weeks, Colorado is now Obama's. After a non-gamechanging night tomorrow (for McCain), the RNC will try to bail out as many GOP House members and try to keep the Senate from turning into a Democrat supermajority.

At this point and with the Dems' and Obama's campaign ready with defensive measures at the polls with an army of lawyers, I don't think it matters what the GOP's slimy tactical war with democracy does. It's over as long as all the voter groups turn out big on Election Day. Pretty sure it's gonna be a record percentage after all is said and done.

This means it's going to be a slightly harder fight in that state, but it can and will be done. The monster ground game will still perform it's magic. It will still do what it needs to do.

When a fortress is being sieged, there are always a few casualties.

An important point, they may get away with trimming a few votes away with this, but they can't stop the inevitable. I'm looking forward to seeing people switch fixes from hopium to laughing gas :P

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/10/13/great.schlep/index.html

The Silverman video quickly became a Web sensation, garnering about 2 million hits in the two weeks since it was posted on thegreatschlep.com, organizers said. Thousands of people pledged to call their relatives in Florida and more than 100 people volunteered to pay their own way to travel to the Sunshine State to campaign for Obama among Jewish voters, Wallach said.

Bender saw the Silverman video on YouTube in Los Angeles, California, where he works as a writer. Despite the humor of Silverman's call to schlep, the video's message resonated with Bender because of the difficulty he faced convincing his own grandparents.

"I thought it was brilliant," Bender said.

He decided to go to Florida and try one more time.

When Bender recently returned to his grandparents' retirement community in Tamarac, Florida, near Fort Lauderdale, he was greeted with several surprises. Months of telephone conversations and his trip had paid off: His grandparents told him shortly after he arrived that they were going to support Obama.

The next surprise was that his schlep had generated interest around their retirement community. A lot of interest. So many other seniors wanted to hear about Obama that the venue for a meeting on the subject had to be changed from the Furst's living room to a ballroom in the community's clubhouse.

An hour before Bender started to make his case about Obama on Sunday, groups of senior citizens were staking out space in the ballroom. Soon there were more than 100 people and no more chairs.

Sporting an Obama T-shirt with Hebrew writing on it, retiree Morty Brill said, "The economy, the war, you think you can trust Republicans to fix them?"

If there were any people in the room with reservations about Barack Obama, they kept those doubts to themselves.

As Bender told the crowd that Obama was not a Muslim and that Obama was a staunch supporter of Israel, he was met with heads nodding in agreement throughout the room.

However, Bender felt the need to drive the point further. If Obama was elected, he said, then Bender would not worry so much about politics and "would have more time to find a nice Jewish girl to marry."
Whether Mike Bender's schlep really changed any minds is anyone's guess, but the applause from the crowd was deafening.

Schlepping <3

Me. I was licensed to drive as Frank - then the current administration wasted all your tax dollars on "Homeland Security" and Frank now needed to be validated as "Francis" even though nobody ever calls me that.

And once more with feeling for anyone who cares:

THE NUMBER OF "FAKE" VOTERS IS ALMOST NONEXISTENT.

It's a fantasy used by Republicans to scare fringe-case voters and minorities away from the polls. Or rather, to excuse the bullshit voter intimidation they do under the guise of that.

My birth certificate says "Steven". I'm not sure if my driver's license does, or if it just says "Steve". I know for sure some of my various records (official governmental ones, or things like utility/credit/bank accounts) are just as "Steve" and not "Steven".

No idea what my voter registration has me down as.

That's awesome. Thanks for posting that.

OK, so there is no possible way that the Ohio SoS office can perform the task appointed to them in the time alloted. So basically nothing changes, since the ruling doesn't apparently invalidate any registrations that are currently on the books, just mandates a program that checks said registrations.

At least that's what I am reading. No big deal, other than the fact that checking via DMV and SSA records isn't really a good verification method anyway.

Olbermann and Maddow may be the only two political pundits on television who're not afraid to say "voter" and "suppression" in the same sentence.

Both had good shows tonight where they debunked all the ACORN nonsense -- even reminding viewers of the U.S. Attorney Scandal and its connection to these bogus voter fraud charges.

Maddow also mentioned how the '04 Ohio vote was most likely stolen by the then Republican Secretary of State, Kenneth Sleazeball Blackwell.

Questioned ballot or do they only do that in my district. When I went to sign up for voter registration they fudged my last name so everything is identical to my photo id except that one letter in my last name is a d instead of a g. I've never gone to go get it fixed because I can just do a questioned ballot every time I vote :lol

Funny quote from Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) earlier this week:

“About quarter till 12 on election night, it’s gonna be Bill O’Reilly sitting there with Sean Hannity,” he said, drawing another cascade of jeers from the crowd at the mention of another popular conservative Fox host.

“No, no wait a sec, this is gonna be too much fun. You’re not gonna be booing ‘cause you know what’s coming next. So Hannity – they’re going through all these numbers and Barack’s won California, New York and Illinois and Michigan and Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and all these others. And, you know McCain wins Utah or something,” Brown said, drawing appreciative laughs and claps from the energized crowd.

“Then Hannity’s sitting there next to O’Reilly, and they’re looking at each other, and O’Reilly says, ‘You gonna do it?’ And Hannity says, ‘No.’ So O’Reilly – sweat’s coming, tears are coming down his cheeks – you can see ‘em on your flat screen. And O’Reilly says, ‘Well, Ohio went for Barack Obama. He’s gonna be president of the United States!”

Sherrod Brown truly is "one of us".

I'm looking forward to the myriad creative and awesome mixes of Fox News pundits, I really am.

I'm hoping someone manages to put one together with the Benny Hill Yakety Sax song, but I'm not sure if there's generally as much love for that song as there should be.

9 point spread for Obama as of now. Tomorrow will be important for McCain methinks.

I've had enough of the election muckraking bs, how about Obama wins and we call it an election? Meow.

Not as much as I'd have thought. YouTube seems to be infested with die-hard republicans.

Whenever I search for O'Reilly or Hannity, the first five or ten hits have titles like "WHINY LOOSER ALAN COLMES GETS OWNED BY HANNITY!!!!1!". It made searching for Hannity's more recent meltdowns somewhat more involved than it needed to be.
