One in four voters believe President Donald Trump's unsupported claim that millions of votes were illegally cast in the 2016 election, but more people believe that Trump benefited from any electoral malfeasance instead of Hillary Clinton.

A new POLITICO/Morning Consult survey showed that 25 percent of registered voters say they agree with Trump that millions of people improperly cast ballots last November. But if the election was subject to voter fraud, 35 percent say it's more likely any improper votes benefited Trump, and 30 percent say they benefited Clinton.

In the opening days of the Trump administration, the White House has signaled that it would open an investigation into voter fraud, even though there is scant evidence of widespread issues with the nation's electoral system.

Overall, the new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll — which was conducted Jan. 26 through Jan. 28 among 1,991 voters with a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percent — paints a mixed picture for the new president.

Trump's approval rating is ticking upward toward 50 percent: 49 percent of voters approve of how Trump is handling his job, and 41 percent disapprove. That is more positive than other polls; a 51-percent majority disapproves of Trump in the latest Gallup tracking poll. Even Trump's favorable rating — 49 percent favorable to 44 percent unfavorable — is a significant departure from other polls, which show Trump viewed more unfavorably.

Kyle Dropp, the Morning Consult co-founder and chief research officer notes that the poll was conducted online instead of Gallup's live-telephone method.

"There could be a mode effect at play like there was during the election," Dropp said, referring to the method by which poll respondents are interviewed. "Additionally, our poll does not yet take into account the reaction to the immigration ban announced this past weekend."

One centerpiece of Trump's nascent presidency — a border wall with Mexico — is reflected in the poll, but public opinion is nuanced.

When told the cost of the wall will be between $8 billion and $14 billion, 42 percent of those polled — a clear plurality — say it should not be built at all. Sixteen percent say it should only be built if Mexico pays, and 29 percent say they favor the project even if the U.S. pays.

Nearly half of the voters polled support a 20-percent tax on goods imported from Mexico to pay for the wall — a clear indication that the public is in favor of punitive measures against the nation's southern neighbor. But just 6 percent of voters say building the wall should be Trump's top priority, the third-worst ranking of any priority polled.

And after years of deep concerns about the nation's mounting debt, a 44-percent plurality says that Congress should consider policies even if they plunge the nation deeper into red ink. Fifty-eight percent say a massive infrastructure package — a top White House priority — will increase the debt, but 10 percent say its their top priority.

Neogaf really is a safe, liberal bubble. You feel surrounded by like-minded liberal folk, only to realize that you truly do not represent a mainstream opinion. Very scary. Democracy was a mistake.

Pretty much what I keep telling people. Yeah, there are a lot of people really angry and upset. But there are a lot of people who aren't. None the less, this doesn't mean we shouldn't fight. Do not give up hope.

Well, this is a poll among likely voters. Unfortunately, likely voters are older and more likely to be conservative. Very few liberal voter demographics vote reliably.

Nearly half of the voters polled support a 20-percent tax on goods imported from Mexico to pay for the wall

This is the real news here, and could accurately be replaced by, "Half of Americans have zero idea what a tax on goods would do to their own personal lives."

I always knew there was a certain amount of people, mostly old white people with nothing better to do, that would always vote Red literally no matter what (of course, there's a set of those for blue too). I always wondered what that percent was.

Looks like it's right about 26%, which is how many people voted for him of eligible voters too.

We can't let less than 60% of eligible voters vote ever again.

I can't believe people are this stupid. You'd think the "fiscal responsibility party" would be the one to know and point out, hey, consumers actually end up paying basically all taxes.

I hope I get to live to see a day where Trump's approval rating actually falls to a reasonable level (somewhere like 10%)

It's pretty sad. I figured people wouldn't realize the problem, given it requires thinking beyond hearing the words 'tax on Mexico', but it's still disappointing to see the percentage so high.

I will continue living in as blue of a state as I can (currently NY and NYC) until the day it turns red or the country becomes too intolerable to live in. I have been discussing with my girlfriend the possibility of moving to Canada should shit hit the fan here. She's on board.

So now I'm trying to enroll in an MS in statistics program to finish in two or three years. At the moment I have a BA in psychology and an MPA (Master of Public Administration) in inspection and oversight and I don't think I'd get very far with those degrees in Canada. Thinking a statistics master's would be more universal and appealing.

yeah democracy was a mistake because someone you disagree with was elected in your own unfair system where someone with the least votes wins, grow up

I mean...........you're proving his point? Though I think it was implied he was talking about America. That and an obvious weakness of all Democratic governments is how informed the voting public is.

You seriously didn't think his supporters were going to start using the regular news, reality, and facts to change their opinion on him after getting him this far?

1 in 4 is much lower than I expected honestly. 1 in 4 Americans believe the sun revolves around the Earth so I tend to use that as my baseline expectation in these types of polls.

I too use that as a baseline as how utterly unknowledgeable people are. Don't look at the numbers of people that don't know who we fought for Independence from, it's disheartening. Including the people that think it was Mexico or China.

Or the "how long does it take to go 60 miles at 60 miles per hour" questions on YouTube.

I'm not from the US though...
But democracy relies on an informed electorate. I think this cycle proved that the electorate at large can be conned and lied to, and form opinions based distortions of facts.

heh, that was exactly my first thought, too. But for that same reason, that's a stat that's ripe to plummet once we're paying out the ass for produce.

Piling on:

According to the 2010 study data, 58 percent of white Evangelical Christians believe that Christ will definitely or probably return to Earth by 2050; conversely, only about 27 percent of white mainline Protestants and 32 percent of Catholics felt certain of the “Second Advent.”

Forty-six percent of Americans believe in the creationist view that God created humans in their present form at one time within the last 10,000 years. The prevalence of this creationist view of the origin of humans is essentially unchanged from 30 years ago, when Gallup first asked the question. About a third of Americans believe that humans evolved, but with God's guidance; 15% say humans evolved, but that God had no part in the process.

Holy shit, you're right. Has his messaging worked so well that they don't listen to things like this unless it comes from Trump himself?!

Yeah really this isn't bad at all. Considering roughly half of voters voted for him, 50% of his supporters are against 2 of his big claims.

Does this poll really say that? More people who believe Trump's voter fraud claims also thinks it benefited him the most.

Is a quarter of people really a mainstream opinion? Refer to people that think the sun revolves around the Earth.
