I've been thinking that what we might actually be in store for is a announcement trailer at PSX during the day, and a gameplay reveal at the CC finals later that night.

What you described is exactly how SFV was handled - announcement at PSX, gameplay exhibition after CC Grand Finals. They even announced the USf4 port before they announced SFV.

And it's a little different in this case cause this isn't being announced at an Japanese event. Both CC and PSX are taking place in NorCal on a Saturday, and Marvel is a Western Focused series. Publishers prefer to give their games announcement stages where the most amount of people they can sell to are watching.

I think you could make it MCU focused but still take some liberties with some characters. Marvel might want to push MCU characters, but they're also currently pushing diverse/female characters in their current line of comics. I don't see any reason they couldn't do both in MvC4.

I admit though that the choices, at least on the Capcom side were somewhat chosen as being rivals. Akira from RS is kind of a counter point to Kamala (Ms. Marvel) and Pyron/Jedah just being a strong enough villain to stand along Loki. Also 6 Veterans for both Marvel and Capcom and 6 newcomers as well, at least if you would count Groot with Rocket as new.
