Pope Francis launches Franciscus Instagram account | World news | The Guardian

Despite once claiming to be a technological dinosaur, Pope Francis has expanded his social media presence by joining Instagram, launching the new account with a picture of himself knelt in worship alongside the caption “pray for me”.

Using the moniker Franciscus, the pope has joined the photo-sharing app to mark the third anniversary of his inauguration as the leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics. He is already a well-established social media user, tweeting regularly under the handle @Pontifex to more than 27 million followers across several accounts in different languages.

The pope tweeted news of his Instagram debut:

Pope's about to go viral, bitches. What are you going to do about it, Protestants, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Shintoists, Nihilists, Atheists, Jediists, Old & Seven-faced Godists, Lord of Lightists?!

Time to pray for papa!

Looking forward for his pictures wearing swimsuits on the beach, and his meals with several #hastags. Mostly the swimsuit ones, though.

Oh I thought he would be launching something to start ridding the Catholic Church of pedophiles and those that protect and hide them, but an Instagram account?

Cool.

I just wonder if Mary would have been on Facebook?

Honestly, it makes me think the Church is an industry and not a "House of God" anymore. They just need a fashion line.

God is the new iPhone everyone.

That's pretty much the Roman Catholic Church ever since the fall of Rome

Why, because they communicate though social media? Is the red cross an "industry" rather than a charitable organization because they use social media as well?
