I was wondering, here in the US what kind of music/who is popular in England and Japan. I like listening to different stuff, and I like to find out what kind of music other cultures listen to. So who is popular there?

Orange Range is the big artist right now in Japan. I don't really care for their music but their videos are entertaining.
What the f*ck does Orange Range mean, heh

DECK'ARD

The Amiga Brotherhood
Bollocks! There's loads of good British music about at the moment:

Kasabian, The Libertines, The Zutons, Goldfrapp

They've all crossed-over into the charts, and these bands should as well if there's any justice:

Client, Killcity, Scarlet Soho, The Soho Dolls, The Paddingtons

80's electro and guitar bands are on a real revival at the moment.

I have no idea actually. :p The entire band is a bit confusing.

"I listen to Japanese rock and those artists are rarely in the top 30 over there (except for Kishidan which I love) if ever... =/"

You listen to Dir en grey right? They make the top 30 quite a bit.

Even though they aren't exactly popular, Art-School, Bugy Craxone and Sparta Locals are really good. For more well known bands, Tokyo Jihen and Go!Go!7188 (my personal favorite) rock.

I hate DEG (only liked one song THE FINAL.) Tokyo Jihen is interesting even though I don't like Ringo's vocals. I don't like female vocals overall though so...

Go!Go!7188 is the best Japanese band ever that nobody knows. SolidSnakex, I've got your back from here on.

.........

It was talk like this that led me to purchase:

Go!go!7188 gyotaku

blegh...although I like some of the songs to various degrees, some songs just turned a part of me off-- the album never really cohesed into a memorable audial experience for me. Perhaps, with several more listens, i would've finally grown to appreciate it, or then again perhaps not.

Hmm...Japanese music is quite good, tho.

Personally, i'm partial to the first bands I discovered--x-japan, l'arc~en~ciel, lunasea,etc--but I'm appreciative of artists such as: bonnie pink, shiina ringo, the backhorn, the pillows, rip-sylme....i'll also throw yoko kanno, tokyo ska paradise orchestra, yuji ohno(can't help but love the lupin music), and various other japanese composers in the mix also.

Sadly, I still haven't heard an album I liked more than L'arc~en~Ciel's Tierra, and it's been freakin' years :(

My favorite Japanese artists are The Pillows, Go!Go!7188, and Hirasawa Susumu.

That being said I've been listening to the new Go!Go!7188 album "Ryuuzetsuran" for almost a week now and I gotta say the album is seriously weak. Personally before this album I'd rank them with Gyotaku being the best by far, Tategami being interesting but not really amazing, Dasoku Housou being a rough but good album.

Ryuuzetsuran just seems like a real mess of ideas. It sounds kinda like Tategami except more mainstream and pop losing a lot of their rough feel, yet not mainstream enough to be accepted by the main industry. The lyrics are also a wierd mix. You have a bunch of 'the world sucks, there is no color, the flowers cry' pessemistic songs, and then you have "Kunoichi" a song about being a female ninja written using ninja-era words. Then you have a goofy last song about growing up. I dunno, even within the songs themselves I'm feeling this "errrr...so what the hell are they actually saying?" kind of thing. Musically I don't think any of the songs really stick out much; Aoi Kiretsu their single off the album is probably the strongest song on it and that's not even saying much. There's like 3 slow songs but all of them are worse than the small selection of slow songs from their other albums. Meh, it's not a bad album and I really really want to like it because I am a pretty decent fan of the band but I think it's very mediocre and I feel like the band hit this perfect sound at the Gyotaku stage and as they grew up a bit and became more like a real band they started losing their charm and become worse.

I dunno, I'm seeing them in live in a small house like place that only holds 300 people max in 3 weeks so maybe their live takes on this new album will blow me away.

OTOH, I can't wait for the new Pillows album that comes out tomorrow. Their single "sono mirai wa ima" is really fucking good IMO. The single is better than the entire new Go!Go!7188 album. They've been on a great roll lately with Smile/Thank You my Twlight/Penalty Life (though Penalty Life is the weakest of the 3 IMO and TYMT is the strongest IMO). I think they've really shown that even though they've been releasing albums for 15 years they're still hitting their peak which is fucking awesome. Also they are AMAZING live, like wow just amazing. So yea I'm expecting great things from "Good Dreams".

"the backhorn"

Yikes, forgot all about them. Yamada Masashi's vocals are f'cking awesome. Since CASSHERN is coming to the US they'll probably get a few new fans here. They had the best song on that soundtrack even though its packed withalot of great songs. Requiem is just awesome though, especially the opening.

"Ryuuzetsuran just seems like a real mess of ideas."

It's much more experimental than their other albums, but I think it works. Some of their best songs are on it imo. Kanngae Goto (the one with vocs from Yuu and AKKO), Sennnichikou and Otona no Himitsu are all really top notch. I do agree though that Gyotaku is their best. C7 is still my favorite song by them.

"Listen to the new japanese stuff like Asian Kung-Fu Generation "

Check out Art-School. They sound alot like AKFG.

Some other good bands, The Brilliant Green (release a new album damnit!), Swinging Popsicle, advantage Lucy, Paris Match, Beret, Moi Dix Mois (if you want music that sounds like it was ripped out of CV) and Onmyouza. For singers/pop groups, Nakashima Mika, Fayray, Ringo Shiina (she's now formed Tokyo Jihen so her solo career is no more), Salyu (if you've seen All About Lily Chou-Chou, that's her singing the songs) and HALCALI. HALCALI is pop rap but its so good that you've gotta love it. Their videos are are the best.

Hyde is pretty good, his last album 666 was great.

Will always enjoy X Japan and Boom Boom Satellites are awesome too.

Can't really define what a culture likes through just scanning on the pop charts. I listen to a lot of UK bands as well as Japanese and Australian. Not really fond of US bands cause there was that whole stage where they all sounded like Creed and I wanted to bury myself. Granted there are some greats, Tool for example.

Well I'm not enjoying Dir en Grey either. Or Malice Mizer.
SSX, if Go!Go!7188 disappoints, well, I'll be upset.

Anyone know Porno Graffitti? Any other recommendations if I like them?

sprsk

Yeah, I've had Romantist Egoist & Worldillia on loop for the last few hours. I'm trying to get hold of the best of Reds/Blues for some of their older stuff.

DEG is just so random that it's really hard to suggest them to anyone. One second they'll put out something awesome like The Final or Mushi (their best song) and the next you've got Kyo going back to his yelling in saku. Malice Mizer is great though, just make sure you're listening to the Gackt era stuff which would be Voyage and Merveilles.

As for Porno Graffiti, try Lover Callots they're kind of similar.

SSX seems to have the best idea of what's popular here.

Here's what seems to be popular (I'm measuring by what I hear on the radio alot)

Orange Range
Hirai Ken
Hamasaki Ayumi (still gets alot of airtime)
Kreva (decent hip hop)
B'z
Nakashima Mika (nice voice)
Namie Amuro (kinda making a comeback)
Aiko
Pierrot

some others to tired to think anymore at the moment.
