The police in Portland, Ore., arrested a person they say stole the backpack and wedding ring of Rick Best, one of the men who was fatally stabbed last week as he tried to intercede when a man screamed anti-Muslim insults at two women on a commuter train.

The police said on Twitter that an arrest was made on Friday, one day after announcing that they were seeking a suspect in the theft.

The suspect was identified as George Elwood Tschaggeny, 51. In a statement, the police said he was wearing Mr. Best’s wedding ring at the time of the arrest. The backpack was also found, but with some items missing, including a wallet.

Mr. Tschaggeny was booked into the Multnomah County jail and will be arraigned on Monday. He faces charges of theft, tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse.

On Thursday, the police released surveillance footage showing the suspect. They described him as a white male with blond, mullet-style hair, wearing a black Jordan Brand baseball cap and a black T-shirt with an image of Marilyn Monroe and an American flag.

MILWAUKIE, Ore. (AP) — Mourners remembered one of the men who was fatally stabbed trying to stop an anti-Muslim tirade against two teenage girls on a Portland light-rail train as a modern-day martyr and a hero who never stayed on the sidelines when others were in need.

At the funeral Monday of Ricky Best, 53, one of his teenage sons, Erik Best, said his father understood deeds were more important than words, according to The Oregonian/OregonLive (http://bit.ly/2sKPWha ). He said his father was a “child of God.”

Best, an Army veteran who worked for the city of Portland, also leaves behind a wife, two other teen sons and a 12-year-old daughter.

At Best’s funeral, the Rev. Rick Paperini used the word “martyr” to describe Best’s actions.

“It is a privilege to love,” Paperini said. “I think Ricky understood love this way. He saw it as an opportunity and a privilege, and that’s why he responded the way he did on the 26th of May, 2017.”

Archbishop Alexander K. Sample described the actions of those who stood up on that train as “an amazing demonstration of human love and dignity and respect for another.”

Sample said that he was “proud that a member of our own Catholic community here in the Portland area really witnessed to what it means to be a disciple of Jesus, to love another as we love ourselves as our Savior taught.”

And it just burns me up inside that all Trump could say about this incident was some remarks likely not even written by him himself, deliberately tweeted out from the POTUS account instead of his personal ones to not only do the bare minimum but deliberately minimize the amount of eyes on it. If he can't use an attack or incident like this to advance his personal agenda, he couldn't give the slightest fuck about such attacks and is not at all, in any way even the slightest bit interested in researching/taking steps to figure out how we can minimize and prevent attacks like this in the future, however we can, to make their deaths truly have some degree of meaning and to make sure that other families don't have to go through the same thing.

“I think it’s immensely immensely morally wrong and irresponsible how much money we have gotten as opposed to how much support, money, love, kindness that has been given to that little girl.”

Is that a white savior complex or is it recognition that you got slashed in the neck while helping others and people want to help your recovery? If it's so morally wrong, refuse the money or donate it to the girls or donate it to causes fighting prejudice.

Nevertheless, obviously an awesome dude. Very glad he survived.

Probably. There's a litany of other things that can follow here. Hopefully he'll lie under oath and have perjury tossed in there too.

You have to plea not guilty first, so your lawyer can start haggling the jail term for you.

The DA probably will still offer nothing and make it a show trail anyway.
