A magnitude 4.0 earthquake hit in Bárðarbunga volcano at around 11:00 am this morning. The earthquake was at a depth of 3 km, which is much shallower than most of the other earthquakes in the area in recent days. Two other earthquakes, of magnitude 3.8, also occurred in the volcano before midday, ruv.is reports.
According to the Iceland Met Office, the latest earthquakes do not necessarily mean that an eruption is imminent.
Seismic activity in the area has been ongoing since Saturday morning. The immediate area has been evacuated and roads closed.
