Lol, thanks! Not saying I'm living the life, but I'm certainly enjoying mine at the mo. I'm self-employed, as a freelance Graphic Designer, Creative Advertiser, Web Developer, Photographer, and most recently, iPhone applications designer. Whatever I can get my mitts on really, but I like to mix things up all the time to keep myself challenged. I also invest in stocks and shares every now and again.
Ultimately, if my own thing doesn't kick off in the way I want it to, then I might do some contract Design work or work as a (perhaps senior) Graphic Designer at some firm. I have had job opportunities in the past, but nothing that is enticing enough for me to want to drop my current ambitions. I've never really been the type to revel in working for someone else, rather be my own boss, motivating and getting the most out of others working for or around me.

Hmm...you have to really know your stuff and constantly be adapting to new tech/design trends. When you're working for yourself, confidence and pitching ability is as important as the work itself. A huge portion of the job is being an expert salesmen. Knowing what to say and when to say it, enough to entice clients over and make them want, think, feel and love what you love or want them to love.
Also, I'd say contacts/connections are also a fundamental part of it. If you don't have good connects already (people within the industry, or who have widespread reach), you're going to hit a stumble block early on and find things dry up.
It's such an incredibly difficult thing to make it on your Jack Jones. But with a bit of luck, confidence, industry prominent friends and ability, you might be able to make it. I'm not really the person to ask, as I'm far from making it yet. I'm just trying real hard at the mo.
