'Aviator' trio eye 'Angel' for Warners

"The Aviator" team of Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio and screenwriter John Logan are in early negotiations to develop a remake of Akira Kurosawa's 1948 classic "Drunken Angel" for Warner Bros. Pictures.

Scorsese and DiCaprio next collaborate on "The Departed," which is about to begin filming.[...] Beyond that, Scorsese will next direct a big-screen adaptation of Japanese author Shusaku Endo's book "Silence."

Though I don't know what it is with Scorsese's habit of looking at Asian films and thinking that they ought to be remade with Leonardo DiCaprio as the star, at least this news is better than the unsubstantiated Internet rumor that won't die:

Screen legend Robert DeNiro has reunited with iconic director Martin Scorsese to work on a sequel to their classic movie "Taxi Driver" reports Contact Music.

The Oscar-winning actor, who starred as disturbed Vietnam veteran Travis Bickle in the 1976 film, has confirmed the movie veterans are mulling over script ideas for a follow-up to the gritty original.

I think it's just his interest. I remembering hearing that Scorsese was looking at another Kursosawa film to remake (Stray Dog or maybe High and Low.)

That Taxi Driver rumor is ridiculous, however. The very existance of a sequel would pretty much destroy the mystery of the first film's ending.

Drunken Angel doesn't really need a remake, but I'm interested to see what Scorsese can do with it. It'll be interesting to see who plays the drunken doctor (Takashi Shimura in the original film).

What I do have a problem with is Spielberg and Hanks possibly remaking Ikiru--just leave the original movie alone, come up with your own artistic statement!
