He made Watchmen almost faithful to the source material, at least visually. He would totally try to be faithful to the manga.

I think even a modern adaptation of a straight up non-whitewashed Japanese-set Akira, while being faithful to the letter of the work, would lose the spirit (much like Ghost in the Shell). The themes were pretty specific to the time, and Japan is a slightly different place now.
I think an American Adaptation could be very fruitful if they had the balls to stick some actual themes of the time in there and make the cast diverse, immigrants ideally.
Here's your template: Attack the Block. Just re-imagine that movie where Moses (Boyega) is in the Kaneda role, and one of his buddies is Tetsuo.
Edit: Though better yet, go ahead and just watch/rewatch Attack the Block.
I'd rather full scale Bartkira.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but is this a fan-made image or did this actually happen on an episode of The Simpsons?

He says that it's just a rumor but that he'd want to adapt the manga, rather than the film, and that he'd cast young Asian unknowns.

Negotiations have broke down due to creative dinferences.
Stop trying to make anime films a thing.
It's tough for Hollywood studios to bring Japanese manga or anime to life in a way that connects with Western audiences. It hasn't been done successfully even once that I can think of.What about manga to live action? Akira is an awesome story that just happened to be in graphic novel form. If Akira was a book, would that make it ok to turn it into a movie? The success rate hasn't been high, same for game to movie adaptations, but you can't just throw a blanket over the whole thing and call it a bad idea.

I was thinking about a hypothetical Akira movie today starring John Boyega and Steven Yuen.

By the time Hollywood makes an AKIRA movie, Neo-Tokyo will have actually existed, and been destroyed 3 times.

Honestly, the original is not even that great of a film, it's just very visually impressive for its time.
