PPP: Democrats Have Big Enthusiasm Edge for 2018

Wanted to start off your Thursday with some good news.

63% of Democrats say they're 'very excited' about voting in the 2018 election, compared to only 52% of Republicans who express that sentiment. When you look at the 2018 House picture just among the voters most excited about turning out next year, the lead for Democrats grows to 19 points at 57-38. Republican leaning voters are comparatively disengaged, with the GOP holding advantages only among voters who are 'somewhat excited' (48-40) and 'not that excited' (46-31).

One reason for the comparative lack of Republican excitement may be the continued unpopularity of Donald Trump. Only 43% of voters approve of the job he's doing to 50% who disapprove. The core promise of Trump's campaign was to 'Make America Great Again,' but only 35% of voters actually think he's accomplished that goal to 55% who think he hasn't.

Foreign policy has taken on a larger role in the national discussion in recent weeks and Trump's leadership on that front isn't inspiring a ton of confidence. 39% of voters think he will get the United States into World War III during his Presidency, to just 40% of voters who don't think he's going to have that effect. Trump has continued to attack the Obama administration's approach to foreign policy lately, but by a 51/39 spread voters think Obama had a better handle on foreign policy than Trump. And by a 51/43 split, voters would rather still have Obama than Trump as President overall.

Much more here.

I don't understand voters who only get excited when they lose. People take for granted all policy reform that takes place when their chosen officials are in office.

If the Dems are smart they'll push hard across the country in 2018, even in places where they have no shot, and put one or both of Biden/Bernie on the 2020 ticket.

The fact that 35% of voters think he's "Making America Great Again" terrifies me.

I'll always view the 30-35% of voters figure as the percent of reliably racist white people among voters. These people will sink with Trump to the very end.

Everyone else should be game for Democrats to appeal to in 2018/2020.

It's basic human psychology. You can't expect people to treat politics as the most or even one of the most important things in their life despite it objectively being one of the biggest factors in their quality of life. Much like climate change, the consequences aren't immediately apparent in obvious fashion so most people prioritize immediate issues in their life over far removed and slow developing problems.

biden has baggage that nobody really bothered with during 2016 and bernie will be old af

i agree they need to get someone more "personable" tho because apparently being incredibly prepared and qualified is a negative now

The psychology of it. People are prone to remembering the "misses," the things that they don't get, rather than all the things that they do.

getting embarrassed on every level this past election and missing a layup against one of the worst candidates in american history will do that

I mean, I know I'm pretty excited to go vote in 2018 and I'll be making sure my family will be as well

Will be interesting to see the turnout. Complaining about stuff and laughing at the Trump admin with gifs, memes or whatever does nothing. Get out and vote.

i am friends w/ someone from pa who leans very left but didn't vote

hope she's feeling enthused this time

People who lean very left are rarely enthused in the USA, the democrats are a centrist party on the global scale. Its why Bernie got so much play IMHO, he was an actual leftist candidate and he motivated a ton of people to be interested in politics who are normally disenfranchised because of having no left party. Democrats need to go hard left and motivate the millions who don't vote to get back seats in my opinion.

They also have a big 'embarassing loss' and 'infighting' edge

The infighting kills me. What's worse is that when I stumble into threads about republicans fighting amongst themselves, I always see people praising that shit happening, the letthemfight.gifs flooding in.

Yet the republicans most definitely say the same shit about us.

Yeah, it's a pity. You could have 16 years + of progress if you give them the power throughout. Just think what Obama could have done if he had what Trump has now and then possibly Hilary or whoever. Taking the win then ignoring everything doesn't work.

Enthusiasm edge is a thing?
Actually apart from say Michael Moore etc when it came to the regular narratives the one trend even political pundits were mentioning leading up to 2016 was enthusiasm . They said all signs go to Clinton except trump voters are more enthusiastic and the more enthusiastic side has invariably won ...

I don't know if I'm more baffled by the people (quite possibly the survey writers) who think that it's realistic to accomplish a goal of that lofty nature in four months... or the 35% of responders who think that he actually *has*.

I mean, if you're going to try to poll that segment of the right-wing viewpoint, surely you'd couch things in terms of "are on the right track towards..."?

But I think the underlying worry about that 35% is that it comes across as, well, hero-worship. I'd be interested in hearing their justification of that belief (I mean, it's easy for us to make assumptions about it, but I don't think those assumptions are the ones they'd state!), whether they can position it in terms that don't sound like extremist sycophancy.

All of the early contenders will be at the progressive CPAC next month - they're calling it the Ideas Conference. Booker, Warren, Murphy, Gillibrand, Steve Bullock, Kamala Harris, and my favorite Eric Garcetti will all be speaking.

Too little too late. these dumb mother fuckers should have been enthusiastic in 2016.

Good luck trying to get anything back in 2018 in a gerrymandered country.

Yeah, Jon Ossoff almost took the Georgia seat. A R 30+ district. Everyone needs to stop being so pessimistic.

But all these BIG wins Trump is claiming. I'd think the Republican enthusiasm would be through the roof! Fake news.
