Pre-E3: The Matrix: Path of Neo

Okay I'll admit it, I'm impressed. Shiny Entertainment's The Matrix: Path of Neo looks absolutely fantastic. I'm talking "has the potential to go head-to-head visually with God of War" fantastic. And believe me, I know what you're thinking: after playing 2003's fun but obviously rushed Enter the Matrix, a brand new game from the exact same developer doesn't exactly leap out at you -- but trust me, if Shiny can do on the PlayStation 2 what it accomplished so effectively in it's Pre-E3 event tech demo, you'll change your mind in an instant.

What the shit?!

Shiny wants the gameplay to mirror the movies more so than any other motion picture-inspired videogame has before. To accomplish this, Perry claims that anything that Neo could do in the movies you'll be able to do in the game as well. Not only will Neo be a master of seven different fighting arts (learned and enhanced through the brainjack training programs only hinted at in the films), but he'll also be able to view the world in code vision, slow down the enemies and objects around him, and eventually even fly. Players will even be able to recreate the end of the first movie by gaining the ability to jump into their opponents and burst them from the inside. It sounds awesome, but it's just too bad we didn't get to see it.

Before showing it, he explained that he was a bit worried about recreating the Neo/Multiple-Smith showdown from the second and third films. His team wanted to ensure that it would be both fun and fast without looking too limited or without having to sacrifice the visuals established elsewhere in the game. Originally the team's main goal was to put 50 animated Agent Smiths onscreen at the same time, but one of their star programmers seemed to think he could best that by leaps and bounds. Needless to say, for my demo Perry ended up showing off a parking lot filled with 750 animated Agent Smiths at once -- all of which were running at a smooth framerate and without any of the cool special effects taking a major hit to do so. What really put his demonstration over the top, though, was that he then added a second layer of Smith's to the existing 750 for 1500 total Smiths in all. The framerate still didn't take a hit, each and every one of them were animated, and all of it was running on a PS2 dev kit. I think it's safe to assume that people are going to get the epic Neo vs. Agent Smith battles that they've been waiting for.

Hopefully Shiny actually delivers this time, because this sounds like it will be freaking awesome.

didnt warner brothers say they were gonna start suing development companies for making shitty games based off their licenses? or was that another movie studio.

Yeah, it's Warner Interactive and they'll fine the developer if the game doesn't meet a certain score on Gamerankings.

The head of Warner Interactive was also the head of Monolith and it was funny seeing G4 confront him about the bad reviews for Monolith's Matrix Online and how he backpedaled on the whole thing.

They had an interview with them in EGM, and they admitted the first was complete shit. The only fault is on WB for forcing them to push it out so fast. They said they went from Alpha testing to Beta in 24 HOURS. A task that normally takes, you know, a few months? Thank the pressure from movie studios to control what storyline goes into the game (yeah the Wachowski's bright idea to have the game different characters than the movie), and push out an unfinished product. They got the $$$ they wanted, so don't go bitching about quality when they are the ones who set them up for failure.

This game looks really good, and the Wachowski's said since Neo 'died' at the end of the triology and that ending sucked, they will change it for the game. I've never seen a better blueprint for producers to blow the most promising movie franchise ever into the ground, but they sure did it.

Hey, miracles can happen.

Seriously, if you can't tell the difference between "its" and "it's", you're a god damn fucking retard.

I loved the Matrix trilogy and have faith that Shiny have learned from their mistakes and will deliver something cool for us fans.

KEEP HOPE ALIVE!

If their standard is that Enter the Matrix was "fun but obviously rushed", then I have no reason to listen to them about Path of Neo, since I found EtM anything but "fun". I think maybe "complete and utter dogshit" might be closer. :lol

That preview means absolutely zip to me.. tech demo's on development hardware? Fill clips of what they want to be in the game?

Why not just get some crayons and draw some shit on a piece of paper while you're at it?

I'll believe it when I see it (and judging by the first screens available, I am *quite* sceptical). Enter the Matrix's engine was said to deliver hundreds of sentinels on screen at the same time, and all it showed was "square-wheels" level.

I slaved through Enter The Matrix. It was buggy, at times very stiff but yet being a HUGE Matrix fan i found alot of enjoyment out of the game and loved how it took place during the events of Re-Loaded yet played from a diffferent perspective. This new game really is the game everyone has been waiting for. This could possibly be the greatest hyped game this side of God of War.

Bah, Wild 9 was awesome and vastly underrated.

Hype? I didn't know anything about this game until a couple of weeks ago, and just from a two paged article from EGm. Can't see the hype anywhere.

On a side note: I am reaaaally looking forward this game, I hope they manage to pull it right this time.

Was Earth Worm Jim released after MDK?

Well, the IGN scored is now locked at 9+ regardless of quality.
He said it has the potential... He didn't say it did accomplish God of War quality. Still, the possiblity of that being true does tickle my fancy.

Sacrifice is one the greatest and most unique PC games of all time. It came out well after Earthworm Jim.

This might be the first game character that can use one facial expression and have it look perfectly alright.

Well, you don't have to record that many. It's Keanu Reeves after all.

Such an awesome game. The best hybrid out of the RTS genre to ever occur. I might reinstall the game now and play it!

Shiny can make a good game if they have the time to do so. I got faith in NEO. :D

I'm getting high hopes for this one....just like I did with EtM..... I'm so confused.

This would be a shitload better if it was on next gen console.Hopefully it gets ported.

IGN's pre-e3 has sucked so far. Where the hell are the big good games? This game will suck and they know it.

There will probably be some solid things revealed in the next couple days. Obviously most of the really big guns are being held until E3, but the days leading up to the show will be for revealing those games that you know are coming but haven't seen yet.
