There's no confirmation it's a 2024 release though, so not going to include it. Also Suikoden 1 and 2 Remaster. Both are two of my favorite games ever, but they're merely remasters, so I'm going to leave them out. If Metroid Prime 4 comes out in 2024, it'll definitely be in my top 5 as well, but no indication it's coming out any time soon.

Paper Mario 2 - this game HOLDS up, so I just hope Nintendo doesn't go overboard with the "QOL" improvements, ruining it like Majora's Mask 3D.
Rise of the Ronin - Loved Nioh 2. I just hope this game isn't too much Assassin's Creed and Team Ninja takes more note of Elden Ring... please.
Hellblade 2 - I enjoyed the first game. Not sure they can replicate the same feel with a higher budget...
Prince of Persia - You know, the demo I played was very fun - like a more dynamic Metroid Dread.
Shinobi - I hope this comes out soon, it's been a while since Streets of Rage 4 no? I trust this team.

If Shinobi doesn't come out... giving a honorable mention to Alone in the Dark. Even though my mind knows that this will not be good, my heart still hopes for a fun quirky RE clone.

Bro, if they could remake RE1 in the 2-4 remake style, and exercise restraint to where every single indiviual zombie encounter is meaningful, that would be a dream.

RE4 Remake is probably my favorite game of 2023, but by the end, you're taking on waves of 20 enemies, and that wouldn't work for RE1.

2024 is a rough year for my tastes. Super disappointed that neither GTA 6 nor Wolverine will make it that year. All I’m left with is Avowed, Hellblade II, STALKER 2, AC Red. Those are potentially some pretty good games, but not the kind of banger list I’d hope for. I think it’s a great year for fans of Japanese games though.

• Dragon's Dogma 2: Just bought it after Thanksgiving. Haven't tried it. Seemed a little underwhelming and needed some optimization so I just waited.
• Prince of Persia Lost Crown: Bought it day 1. Actually haven't played it yet, but I will try ASAP. Been waiting all year. So many other metroidvanias are always popping up that I have to try and space them out. It's a struggle. I suspect I will love the game, but maybe not quite top 5. We'll see.
• Banishers Ghosts of New Eden: Didn't buy it. Looks okay, but I lost interest the more I saw. Will get on sale and probably enjoy it.
• Ghostbike: Delayed
• Rise of the Ronin: Was kind of a bland disappointment. Played about 25 hours then dropped it. Combat is fun, like a simplified and arcadey Nioh. Open world design is largely a giant chore with nothing remarkable. Some areas look nice, but nothing in the actual gameplay or navigation is worth even engaging with. I literally just put the horse on auto-pilot to go from fight to fight. Story was nothing worth noting.

I still have tons to play but off the top of my head my top 5 would likely include some of these.

2/5 again: FFVIIRB and Metaphor.
Silksong didn't come out in the end. Pretty disappointed with Unicorn Overlord. I don't know, maybe my expectations were too high after 13 Sentinels. In the end, I didn't even play DD2 because the more I saw of the game, the less I liked it.

I'm kinda struggling past that as I don't know what is releasing especially VR wise. Hellblade 2 will be up there if it has VR else I'm not that interested and will just give it a quick whirl just to admire the graphics. I accurately predicted my interaction with Hellblade 2. I was off on the Sony releases, Stalker 2 I haven't really had a chance to play, FS2024 was accurate.

Yeah, they ruined Paper Mario with new handholding-mechanics for me. Sad.
Rise of the Ronin felt lame and cheap sadly.
Hellblade 2 felt like a step backwards compared to the original and didn't improve where it needed to improve.

Total miscalculation on my part, except Prince of Persia was really good.

Kinda wild how Dragon's Dogma 2 was on most people's lists last year and was quickly forgotten about.

It got a huge amount of buzz and there were some murmurs of it being the next Elden Ring, and then within about a week or two most of the gaming community basically forgot about it and moved on. It's still a unique experience but that game needed another year of development to work on the 2nd half of the game, and then 6 more months of optimization for the terrible launch performance.
