edit: oops, can't direct link to the screens.

too bad it's not widescreen like these two images. Still really excited about it though.

they're just running the saturn version in a window? lazy bastards! screwing around with psp emulators this week has reminded me of how great the hardware is, and it's absolutely criminal the way developers are wasting or neglecting it. oh well. it's a great game, and i'll still buy it if someone localizes it.

edit: aw, you fixed it.

And of course they're being lazy fucks about this. It's the PSP! They can't be arsed to actually reprogram the game and make it take up the whole screen, because that would require a budget over five hundred yen.

Man, wait till you play Rockman Dash.

I imported this thing for the Saturn when it released...very impressive...right up there with Psychic Killer as the most impressive side-scrolling titles for the system. Too bad I couldn't understand anything that was going on in there. Hopefully, this comes Stateside.

Grizzlyjin is right.

IGN Article
The PSP version seems like it's going to be a close port of the Saturn title. The game will offer wide screen support as well as the ability to play in a framed window. The font has been redone for the PSP version to make the text readable. In addition, Atlus is including a gallery mode featuring sound and illustrations.

Actually I think you have the option to remove the window. When the PSP port was first announced, it was said it would have true widescreen in addition to being able to run the game in a window. I don't know why the latter option is even there, unless it's to keep the port as close to the Saturn version as possible?

Yeah, actually if you look on the fourth page of screens there's a setting in between those two, with the display going to the top of the PSP screen and black bars just on the sides.

But but but, Iga said you can't do 2D on PSP!

E: The question is, is it actually rendering widescreen, or scaling the original image?

No US release? Poor Lo-Volt never owned a Sega Saturn, you know. This would make the short list easy if the port is good. :)

I think the IGN article may be wrong (actually, wrong is not the correct word... Atlus announced that the game would be wide screen compatible, and it seems that by that they were refering to the inclusion of the boarders... misleading bastards). All the screens that have been shown of the game in any of the Japanese magazines that I've seen (and I've seen 'em all) show the game in a framed view. Devil Summoner is also framed, so I think this is just Atlus being lazy about all their Saturn port projects.

As far as I understood it, he meant, "It's nearly impossible to get significant financial backing for a 2D project for PSP," not "TEH PSP NO DO SPRITIES."

Porting Saturn assets is a big money saver for Atlus.

But Iga did say that Curse of Darkness was pretty much the most the PS2 could do.

Game Informer Interview with Iga said:
GI: Do you think youÂ’ve maxed out the power of the PlayStation 2 with this game?

KI: Yes, I think we have.

Come on now, does anyone honestly believe that? I don't think that can be taken out of context. But yeah, people kinda ran away with that PSP quote. I'll stop now, sometimes I get carried away when talking about Iga, and this thread really isn't about him. Back to Princess Crown.

Anyone mind explaining what made the Saturn version so damn good? It looks pretty cool, but let's talk about gameplay!

The jpegs are a bit blurry so I'm not quite certain, but it looks like the images on the 4th page are simply scaled up to fill the entire height of the screen -- the text is even blurrier on those images.

Shameless, really. On the other hand I don't think there was vertical scrolling in too many places (if any?), and letting a team of pixel artists extend the height of every location wouldn't make sense budget wise. I wish they extended the image to the entire width of the screen (without any scaling) and put the HUD contents into an ornamented border.

if this ever releases in the us, i'll definitely pick it up. always wanted to import it for saturn, but i was afraid of the language barrier

The Saturn game is pretty fun. It's not incredibly deep or anything but a fun little romp. The animation is pretty stellar even if it does have the "separate moving body parts" animation bit.

Gradriel: "Bring me to the US so that I may conquer it, peasant."
Vic Ireland: "Well...."

But seriously hows the gameplay? Looks cute and fun o.o!

I imported the Saturn version way back and absolutely loved ... in spite of the language barrier. Sure hope this game gets localized, because I'd actually consider buying a PSP if it did.

You hear developers say that a lot, and now I'm beginning to wonder if something is misconstrued there. Like, the original question was "Do you think you've gotten all you can get out of the hardware?" or "Do you think your game pushes the hardware?" It's easier for someone in development to know how system resources are allocated in the game s/he worked on and then say "Yes, this is the most we could do with the hardware." (Or, at least, they refrain from saying they can do more so that people don't feel cheated.) That very thing has been said and disproven far too often now, and this is the only conclusion I have as to why.

Princess Crown FAQS

Good lookin' out.

Princess Crown stands as my most expensive non-NeoGeo game purchase @ $90. My sweetie wanted to play it. Hell, I still need to play through it.

Now that it's out in Japan has anyone picked it up? Never played the original, so I'd like to know A. How the PSP port is (loading, controls, etc...) and B. If the game still holds up these days? Money's kinda tight so I want to hear some good remarks about it before I spend the cash.

Oh wow, those translation pages are awesome! I got through the game years ago on Saturn using trial and error and my own guesswork musings, but I might hafta buy this and enjoy it once again with Anoop's translation guide.

IGN said that at TGS it seemed like a good and bad port. Good because it seems just like the Saturn version, bad because they didn't bother making the game widescreen.

I did hear that you can choose from a bunch of different display modes (original size with/without frames, larger 4:3 with/without frames, and stretched 16:9). Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like they allowed for any true 16:9. :(

I'm planning on picking this game up, possibly tonight if I can, and I'll write impressions if no one else has by then. It's been years since I played the game, but I am one of the few that always thought Princess Crown was pretty overrated; it always seemed more like a very basic fighting game/BEU trying somewhat unsuccessfully to fuse with an RPG, but it looked great for the time, which is why everyone was all over it IMO. But I still wouldn't mind trying it again on PSP. :)

Woo, my copy should have shipped today. Should be here tomorrow, yay for express mail. I hope it's also 1.52 firmware.

Well true that the game is a little overrated, but it was a well animate 2-D game which is why it was mentioned so much. Would love to have some animated gifs from this game.
