ProbablyMonsters lays off Battle Barge staff after project cancellation

Earlier this year, ProbablyMonsters added Bungie alum Chris Opdahl to lead Hidden Grove on development of an unannounced multiplayer project. In 2021, the studio raised $250 million in funding to bolster its various development teams.

At the time of that funding, one of those teams was developer Firewalk Studios, which closed down earlier this week after the failed launch of its multiplayer shooter Concord. Before PlayStation bought Firewalk in 2023, it was one of the first teams launched by ProbablyMonsters.

You almost never want to see layoffs, but then you see something like this and you think, "Maybe it is necessary..."

Their business model is raising up these Studios like they're Silicon Valley start-ups, with series rounds of funding and relying on "exits" to be profitable.

Concord was initially a success for them because they made out like bandits when Sony bought Firewalk, but the subsequent cratering of Concord may have tarnished their reputation as an incubator way too much for future buyers to take a risk on the other teams.

Add that to the high interest rates and the situation can become quite dire.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
i think after this concord fiasco, no publisher would want to deal with probablymonsters.

IMO this company is a scam. Just have a look at their website. Missing links, blank info... amateur to say the least, not the kind of guys to raise 250M.
