So it's a review from a guy who don't like sims for people who also don't like sims.
Seems rather pointless.
Indeed. It is completely pointless so the review should have never came to light from such a person. It only makes the magazine/media as a whole look bad for no matter what reviewers think, they represent the publication.
What I don't like is how many of the review (not all) are also non-constructive or doesn't highlight their expectations despite saying the game doesn't meet it in certain areas. Very quick to say, "I don't like it they could have done better", but they never really to say "WHAT" exactly is the problem and what exactly could they have done better . I hope more people identify these reviewers and completely ignore them... but hey, what else is new.
There was a good comment about the UI design though from one of the mainstream medias. This element is massively important and often taken for granted; the UI that appears when you win/lose a race along with its music together with the menus within the game all affect the enjoyment and immersion factor. This is an area that arcade games like Ridge Racer, Daytona, Mario Kart, F-Zero and other racers generally got down to a T: when you win you feel good during the UI screen along with the moment you've won the race, and the same applies when you lose as well. Yes, this is a sim but crafting the UI is still an important factor that must always be remembered. Crafted sequences of screens and music all goes a long way when done with care, but when it is not cared about in production it can quickly debunk the the player's feelings of joy with staleness. All studios must remember this no matter what kind of racing game you are creating..
