Have I posted my beautiful face before? Or at least that picture? I think it is my most recent MIDDLE-FINGER picture...

I disagree. When people know how to hit properly it does help the table. Again in the initial example the fatass screwed himself Ninja had nothing to do with it.

If I have a 13 and the guy next to me is showing an 11 and the dealer is showing a 6. What good is it for me to hit? Me staying possibly helps me and the guy next to me. In the long run the odds are the odds and we are both out. But, when you know how to hit correctly that can help others.

You can't look at the results of individual hands to determine odds. Let's just say I'll believe what I think is correct, backed up by the guy that ran millions of poker hands simulating the odds with both good and bad players at various spots, and his result that your individual odds are equal whether you are playing at a table with great blackjack tables, or horrible players.

Let me clarify I'm not debating if the odds are better or not. The odds are the same if you have 1 or 5 people playing or if they are of good or horrible quality. However I feel better playing with a group of people that know the basic rules. My individual experience is that I have fared better when I have a table of people that know what they are doing over a table that has a nimrod on it hitting everytime. Of course I usually stop playing if I lose three hands in a row so....

Cool, sorry if I mistook what you were saying. I agree, much rather play with people that play the right way. Although then again, last time I played blackjack I got my butt kicked, and haven't played since. Poker for me from now on.

Did the original poster, or anyone figure out what the dealer was showing? This could make a little bit of a difference.

No, I don't think I clarified it as well as I should have. But, I think we agree. I'm kinda amblivent about poker. I like it but, now it seems to be TOO over hyped.

Re-read the original post again carefully. The dealer busted off of a 10 that means that the dealer had a 2-6. It's possible that the dealer could have been showing a 10.

Uh, Boj, may I suggest that in the future you refrain from proudly displaying your nosehair along with an unwarranted flip off to the forum community? Yeah, if you could.

When people don't play toward the recommended rules on when to hit... they cause me to lose money.

I've seen plenty of people suggesting the opposite. Could you please explain how it causes you to lose money?

You answered it in your first statement. I'm not at the blackjack table to help someone else win some cash.

How about, everyone at the table plays right and EVERYONE wins? You can throw anecdotal "evidence" in every direction, but the pros know what's up. Like my man Ken Uston - the master at Blackjack AND Video Games *salute*

I underestand he had a 12-16, i just wanted to know what was showing. I assume a 10 though.

I had never been offended by a finger until I saw that photo. The wrongness of it.....

I really want to have a go at black jack at a casino, but I'm always scared I will screw up and look stupid learning. Or piss off some fat guy now too I guess.

Catfish, if you go to a $5 (or less!) table, chances are you're going to be playing with noobies anyways. Don't be discouraged. Get one of those little plastic wallet cards that show you how to play - casinos don't mind if you read it while you play.

Holy crap...there's a lot of bad blackjack advice in this thread.

A decent introductory book -- if you're interested in learning basic strategy, and also interested in why you really don't want to play anything else in the casino except craps -- is Andrew Brisman's American Mensa Guide To Casino Gambling. Despite the name, it's a very readable, thorough look at the math behind the various games, and the best strategies (if any) to employ.

The principle behind basic strategy is that -- in the absence of any other information about the deck -- there is only one correct way to play every situation, based solely on the composition of your hand and the dealer's upcard. If you learn how to count cards, then you can make some different choices and win. If you play by your gut...you might as well give me your money now, since I'll put it to better use than the casinos will.

Is it true that someone else's play affects "your" cards? Well, technically, sure -- the order of the deck is fixed after the shuffle. But since you DON'T KNOW THE ORDER OF THE CARDS, you have to treat every situation as "random," and play according to basic strategy. There is no such thing as a "bad play" by another player -- make your own choices, drink your tasty adult beverage, and shut up. If someone starts harassing you, move on.

You can ask the dealer what they would suggest. They will suggest how to play in any situation.
Most dealers mean well, but many times, they will offer the wrong advice. Study on your own until you master basic strategy!
