PS two: so how is it? (games / dvds / ps1 / etc)

OK, so PS two has been out long enough for many of you to get some good time in with it. Anyone have any thoughts or impressions? I'm thinking of replacing one of my PS2s (Japanese or US, not sure yet) with one of these. I'd be using it for all three of the above reasons -- PS2 games, movies and PS1 games. How is it in each of these areas? Any pros or cons to speak of?

Also -- does it have the "switch to standby from remote" feature that the latest old model (big size) PS2s had?

Also also -- does it support progressive scan for DVD movies?

Any feedback at all would be greatly appreciated!

It does support pro scan for DVD's but if you're serious about your movie watching you shouldn't be doing it on a PS2 anyways.

EDIT: wow that sounded bad when I re-read it. Anyway, it's a decent player, but on bigger TV's you can see some of it's flaws.

It does progressive DVD playback, it's silent and tiny and awesome. Can't remark on the remote, because I don't have one.

Also, there's no switch on the back so once you plug it in it's automatically on standby. Thought that was a little weird myself.

I'd recommend it, if you're not needing HDD support.

I have a modded one coming in like 2 days..I can give you a run down if no one else has. I know off the top of my head it does do progessive DVD playback. AFAIK it supports all the remote functions except eject (for obvious reasons). But again I dont have it yet, so I'm sure someone ese will answer.

It plays PS2/DVD/PSone games all fine. I only had one incident where I tried playing a DVD-R and it couldn't read one of the episodes on the disc. Other than that, no complaints from here.
It does load PS2 games slightly faster*

*compared to my launch model. Think like 2-4 secs faster for loading screens in some games.

Yes, the recent PS2 remotes with the power and eject button can turn off/on the PStwo. Eject button though is now worthless with the Pstwo.

Yes it does.

The PStwo lid sensor can easily be bypassed to play imports with the magic swap discs. Plus there are some new cases for sale on some sites:

To play Devil's Advocate:

-Proscan, Remote Sensor also are features on the 50001 model
-Playing MGS3 without HDloader is utter madness
-No Horizontal stand = substantially reduced style :D

That being said if you need a new PS2 and never plan on using the HDD, PStwo is probably a good way to go.

3 more questions:

1. How hot does it get? I hear it gets very hot.

2. How easy is it to swap the housing?

3. What's the status on HDDLoader for the PSTwo? Last I checked it was working and about to ship. Haven't heard anything since.

I heard that they are actually already on the second revision of the PSTwo, which addressed the heating problems.

Haven't heard much on the USB Loader front. Hopefully soon.

Modded as in a chip you can use to play all imports, and not have to use a swap trick? Where can I find out more about this? :) I was about to order a Japanese PSTwo (despite having a white PS2 I picked up in Japan over the summer that runs just as well/quiet as the PSTwo!), but I'd rather just have one system if possible.

yeah no swap tricks. GT4 put me over the edge. The modchip in my regular model PS2 died leaving me to play the Japanese games that were compatible with HDAdvance or swap tricks, and the rest sitting there collecting dust hehe. Since none of that works with my JPN GT4 disc, I can't play GT4 until I get the new machine (also sitting in that pile collecting dust)

edit i see, you need the system too. check your pm.

Just for your information, it's now possible to load your 'stored' games off a USB HDD with a different type of HDLoader.

The left side gets warm after a while, but it isn't really "hot".

And yeah, you can turn it to standby with the remote. Mine is working fine with everything since I got it.

does anyone know if the new PStwo works witht he old remote? (you know, the one with the infrared dongle thing that goes int he controller - use without that dongle, obviously). And by getting one, does it mean I can delete the crappy 2 Meg firmware upgrade I used to make the remote work?

PSTwo works fantastic. Only problems: The Logitech Wireless Action controller sensor does make the system sit at a tilt. And the DVD player menu system had some dead zones for me, until I "double-stopped" with a movie in the system. I don't know if this is a bug in the drivers, but double-stopping the movie gave me access to the parental control switch-off and DTS sound options.

The "heat" has been played up a bit too much. Yes, the system does get warm to the touch. But it will never get so hot that it could do damage to the console/media.

The One Year Warranty should be enough to convince anyone to jump on board.

One year warranty? Last I checked, Sony only gave North American PS2's 90 days, unless PStwo is different.

i know the last PS2 model before the new PSTwo came out used the old remote with no infrared dongle, and w/o the memory card drivers. So the PSTwo should work the same way.

For some reason, the PSTwo gets REALLY loud when it plays some CD-based PS2 games (blue discs). You can hear the drive spin and vibrate like no tomorrow. Case in point: Play Gradius V on it and you'll think your PS2 will have a heart attack.

*shrugs*

I've been wanting a PSTwo for some time now, but I am still hesitant after hearing all these little "complaints" and tidbits about this. Perhaps I may hang onto my old console a little while longer...
