PS2 RPG choices for NOV

How much surgery did the US version of Magna Carta undergo? The opening and theme song was messed around with. Anything else?

It's looking DQ and WAAF seem to be the games of choice though.

DQ8. Anything else is icing on the cake. We're picking up Magna Carta as well to avoid having a bitch of a time tracking it down later. ACF is alright, but I wasn't too impressed by my time with it, so I'll pick up that and the rest in a couple months. WAY too many games out lately.

I will end up with all four of the original post and Legend of Heros will be my first PSP purchase since launch.
Cause I'm a whore for RPGs like that.

I will be getting Suikoden Tactics, and DW8

DQ8 - Preorder.

Suiko Tactics - As soon as I have more money/time.

Wild Arms - When it hits $20.

Magna Carta - Nopers, won't pay $50, won't be able to find it for less prolly.

Damn you Magna Carta non-buyers >_< I already have or will soon have all of those mentioned. Here's to finishing them before the end of the 360/PS3 lifecycle.

I've been gradually paying off pre-orders for both DQ8 and Magna Carta. I'll be playing DQ8 first for sure, I just need to get ahold of Magna Carta before it becomes too difficult to track down. I'll have to hold off on Alter Code F for a while.

I suppose this was a bad time to start playing Dark Cloud 2 for the first time. With about an hour every couple of nights to play anything, I should be set for about a year.

Seriously, folks, the Kawazu stigma does not apply here. Tons of power-customization, tons of freedom, beautiful environments, great music, fast & fun battles, plus everything is intuitive and well-explained. This is classic RPGism.

...

NO.

DQ8 for me.

Every review i've read craps on everything you just said. It's another 'game' that is made explicitly to punish the player, it seems, just like everything else that guy has made.

DQ8/FFXII and Mario and Luigi 2 for me.

If it makes you feel any better I'll probably be buying the Japanese version. It's a really good game, though, I dunno why everyone seems to dislike it so much.

I'm interested, but I'm just now getting around to purchasing Digital Devil Saga 2 ...and I'm not even five hours into the first ...and my RPG backlog still includes Disgaea and La Pucelle...

:(

Aww shit, I forgot about Legend of Heroes. It will have to wait.

FFXII demo...oh I mean DragonQuest VIII for sure.

I see a lot of bad talk for Magna Carta but generally NOT from anyone that has played it. I hear alot of "Looks like style over substance" but I still have hope for it. I'm waiting for some reviews to come in. And hey, there's always Magna Carta PSP right?

Definetely DQVIII- I'm a long-time fan of the series and was planning on getting it release day long before the FFXII demo was announced. That's just an added bonus.

Magna Carta is a maybe- I love the art style of the game and the combat system seems intriguing, but I'm worried by the lack of good reviews/hype from the Japanese release.

Every review you've read has been laughably incorrect. Either the reviewers didn't take the time to learn the game systems (which, as I say, are all explained very well in-game) or they simply couldn't handle the idea of an RPG that doesn't have a forced path and that gives you enough rope with which to hang yourself if you do something incredibly stupid. Romancing SaGa is a game to be explored and enjoyed - maybe reviewers looking to jog through a linear RPG are dismayed at that?

This is correct.

I think a lot of RPG players (reviewers, especially?) lose all hope and sanity when they're not forced along a story path in a console RPG. Romancing SaGa lets you do what you like, but since there's a sense of 'time' in the game that's moved along by how many battles you fight and which determines when story events occur for your character, you're never left completely lost in the wild. It helps to have a good sense of adventure and a nose for trouble, but there's plenty of fun to be had in the game, as well as a unique experience with every character you play. It gives you freedom to find what fun there is to be had in the game-world without dumping you off a cliff.

The keyword with RSaGa is adventure. It has tons of it, and the sense of it is very strong. If you've been missing that in RPGs (I know I have), give it a shot. It's the game that Unlimited SaGa should have been.

And if you folks think my credibility or my perspective are suspect, here's what I had to say about USaGa.

I've spent the past ten minutes typing up a response and then backspacing over it.

It's true, Romancing SaGa isn't a horrible game ...but it's sooo not for everyone and I think the reviews show that.

Then again, I'm a bit biased.

Yeah, fair enough. I just really don't like that most people take one look at the game and think "lol kawazu" without giving it a chance, when it's actually really well-done. I mean, it's still not what most people expect in an RPG, and a lot of people probably won't be able to grok that, but it deserves way more attention than USaGa (or SaGa Frontier 1 or 2 did), IMO.

Wow, until reading this thread I didn't even know Alter Code F had golem battles. That's pretty sweet ... how come I never heard about it before? Was this publicized at all?

No, um, I mean.....the battles with golems.

Although it may have battles where you're in the golem for all I know.

Sorry :(

I agree on all counts. It'd be nice, especially on this forum, if people would look past their preconceptions and stereotypes regarding certain titles/scores and give games a fair chance, perhaps by just reading the review text.

Instead, it seems like most take a glance at the review score and toss out "lol kawazu" or the like without even bothering to read why the game might not be for everyone. True, it's their loss ....but it's sad this mindset likely results in enjoyable games being flat-out ignored by those who may otherwise enjoy them. I know I've personally read reviews of games I had little-to-no interest in, just to wind up buying and enjoying it immensely (Gitaroo Man, for starters).

Or maybe I'm just overreacting, and these folk wouldn't have bought R. Saga/whatever games anyways and they're just saying these things to be funny or to piss us off...in which case they're really not contributing to the discussion.

You can't blame people for going "lol kawazu" especially after how the titles with his name attached to them turned out for the most part. It'd be like saying you can't expect Drinky to rile up the Nintendo fanboys despite the fact he has a record of doing so =p.

Sure, it's a bit of an extreme example, but the situation isn't limited to just this game/thread/genre/etc. In this case it's a bit more justified than most, after all, most stereotypes are based on something, but still...

Bah, my idealism is shining through again.

This debate - about Kawazu and his games - makes me lament, more than ever, that we probably see a Hanjuku Hero game in English (even though Egg Monster Heroes was shown off in English, complete with a Robocopy pun), simply because it would probably bomb horribly.

Speaking of which.... *changes avatar*
