PS2 shipments at 96M.

Sales for the Playstation division were up 79.1% for the quarter.

2005/09/30 96.01 million units (Japan: 21.70 million/ USA: 38.78 million/ Europe: 35.53 million)

Jesus fucking christ. That means, what, after Christmas it'll definitely be around 100 million already?

Holy shit.

GO GO PS2!

I didn't know so many units were moved in Europe. In terms of absolute size is Europe now the 2nd largest video game market? Is it now 1. USA 2. Europe 3. Japan?

96M unit shipped was... that pretty damn good, how long did it take the PS1 to reach those numbers? Anyone know how many have actually been sold?

96 million+ already and it has several pricedrops pending! Here in Japan and Europe it's still pretty expensive and has several pricedrops to go, in the US it's a little cheaper but still has quite a few more pricedrops to go to. Who knows how high it's gonna go...It could well shatter psOne total sales.

Q2 FY05 financial performance of the Game Division:

Sales: 214.2B Yen (compared to 119.6B Yen in Q2 FY04)

Operating Income: 8.2B Yen (compared to a very small loss in Q2 FY04)

Worldwide hardware production shipments:

PS2: 5.01M units (an increase of 3.02M units)
PSP: 3.75M units

Worldwide software production shipments:

PS2: 50M units (a decrease of 6M units)
PSP: 9M units

In case further evidence was needed that next-gen consoles are overdue:

PS2 software sales are down more than 10% over last year. Even if you take the absence of GTA:SA into account, that's still a lousy result given the increased user base. New console buyers late in the cycle don't buy much software, while previous owners buy less over time.

congrats sony.

anyways, i knew europe was sonyland, but i had no idea that their market there was bigger than the one in japan. i don't really keep up with europe much, but having almost twice as many PS2s in europe than in japan definitely came out of nowhere for me.

but yeah, keep doing what you're doing sony. with numbers like that, im almost expecting them to take the risk of launching the PS3 at $300 in the states. seems like a pretty safe bet.

man, im really interested in finding out exactly who it is that Microsoft is using as their motivation speaker. that guy must have a hell of a hard job.

you lie, golfers vs pornstars is best :lol

but this is still a good one. neither beat the playstation 1 ad, the one with all the people with the boy who says something like "we've conquered worlds" can anybody post it to download?

"Operating Income: 8.2B Yen (compared to a very small loss in Q2 FY04)"
yup - the PSP launch, PS2 reaching 100 million unit sales, and 73 million USD$ in profits? Sonys sales are amazing, but god damn, they HAVE to do something about margins. :(

And another 150+ billion yen earmarked for "reorganization" - this is the 6th year of reorg!

It'll be interesting to see how the market reacts tomorrow.

A safe bet for high penetration for sure. For financial success? I can't see it.

oh - one thing i found interesting - increasing shipments of PS2 hardware at the same rate of the PSP. Interesting.

I like both of the commercials posted, but I prefer the Double Life one... it speaks to me.

Xbox 360 will sell ten times that!

On a more.. err. realistic note. That's pretty incredible. Sony deserves it, PS2 had amazing titles.

so is there any more thoughts on todays release or is the shipped figures for the PS2 the only thing worth commenting on?

Seems to be very quiet, is today a holiday or something?

Oh, sure, Sony is always talking about SHIPPED numbers, but what about the SALES numbers? They might have shipped 96 million, but I bet they only sold, like, 40 million and the rest are sitting on shelves.

People only buy PS2s to watch DVDs, anyway -- it's not like there are any good games out for it. The Gamecube is cheaper and its games are more fun, but most important, it's INNOVATIVE! Nintendo had the vision to give gamers a handle on the top to open new dimensions in gameplay and pull in the casuals -- I mean, everyone intuitively knows how to hold a handle, right?

Don't forget about:

Man, PS2z crap out every 6 monthz so out of thoze 96M 77M are re-buyz, lolz. Suck it down sfagz!

remember how we scoffed when sony claimed they'd sell a hundred million of these? well, i scoffed -- i thought sega and nintendo would regain ground this gen. :/

Just for the record. The original PlayStation was released in December 1994 and hit the 100 million unit shipment in May 2004.

PlayStation 2 was released in March 2000 and it hit the 100 million unit shipment in October 2005.

Well, if Sony will release the PS3 for $300, they'll probably get 100 million units shipped before 2010. Good job and congrats, Sony.

Holy crap!!! That's insane. It'ill reach 100 million long before PS3 even comes out!! It took PS1 like 10 years to reach that much!!

And they have to lower the price to 99 $/€ yet.

heh, I am on my 2nd PS2. (actually I just bought a used JPN one so 3^^) I wonder if we took a survey here how many people would say they rebought one? I might actually buy a 4th one when they drop to $99 cause the slim would be so super sexy under my TV (and give me enough room for the JPN one!)

I'm still on my launch unit. Been through many controllers though.

My xbox is about to crap out on me I think (takes several on/off presses to get the sucker to boot up). Gamecube is in fine, almost NEW, condition. :D

Well I smoke like a chimney and left my 1st one on for 24 hour periods many times, so I am not blaming sony for its demise or anything... actually I think it could of been repaired rather easily had I not gotten a little angry trying to pry the GT3 disc out of it :lol

What were the last shipment numbers for the Xbox and Cube? Have they passed 20M yet?
As of June 30th
Xbox - 21.90
GCN - 18.76

We get the updated numbers for MS in a few hours and for Nintendo in a few days (according to sonycowboy).

They *could* launch PS3 at $299 in the US ... because they've sold the PS2 at $149 for a lot longer period and have probably racked up extra profit because of it.

I don't think it'd be a bad idea to go with PS3 at about $400 in Japan/Europe and then $300 in the US (and no that's not dumping if anyone's going to bring that tired arguement up).
