PS3 2.0 firmware details posted [confirmed?]

He made it seem like it was coming soon. He did say psp firmware update is coming next week.

What was missing from the list of 2.0 updates? PS2 and DVD upscaling. 720p support... that can't be a coincedence. I say 2.0 is true.

Hopefully we'll get what was demoed at GDC 2006 with FW 2.0.

Come on, Sony.

Better not have been one big lie.

My New FW wishlist:

* XMB Access in Games (To message/invite friends and listen to music)
* Ability to leave voice messages to friends
* Support for more video/audio codecs
* Custom Wallpaper (why the hell is this taking so long)
* Completly revamped PSN Store. The site needs to be user customizable with preferred titles appearing at the top. I've got the screen space so give me a big list of titles on one page please. Back and forward buttons should work as well.

Do this and I'll cancel my XBL account.

Why do you need this with the advent of DLNA streaming? I can stream any codec and any video (even ones from iTunes) to my PS3 now, I have practically no need for more codec support

I think I'd have a better experience watching HD material if TVersity didn't have to transcode it. You're right though it's not too important. I just don't see why not.

Yes good one I agree as well. We need a lot more avatars.

The PSP update was also confirmed to be this week via the SCEA PR for the update last week.

PS3 updates have come once every month since Feb. 2.0 is likely to be the June update.

I love how people exaggerate (see Dan Shu - EGM live) that the PS3 updates come every other week. :)

While that is true, you can't do things like FF and RW, etc. for transcoded files. I don't see a reason to go nuts and add everything that's out there, but it would be good to add some of the more commonly used ones on the internet ... divx, etc.

WMV would be nice too, but I don't see Sony paying for the licensing (then again, they added WMA).

Certainly, I'd love for it to directly handle VOBs (without changing the container) or even better yet ... mount a DVD ISO ...

... but yeah, I don't see Sony adding that anytime soon :p

I am surprised that even now, none of the systems play DIVX. The DIVX company has been in negociations with game companies for a while now, I know that even Cube had it as a ported format (for professional video compression in-game only, no user playback of course), and there was a unlicensed 2nd Party player for PS2. But no PS3 or PSP support (and it'd be such an easy thing to add there too, just have a downloadable DIVX Player on the store if you can't work it into the firmware codecs), no 360 support (but the 360's such a wuss video player since MS won't allow vids to run, except if you can get a WMP network and then it's awesome), and no Wii support (J-MPEG? Thanks...) I hope that the talks are still on and that somebody gets a license on soon, because I really like my home DIVX player and would enjoy having one elsewhere in the house as well.

It seems about time, I don't know why it's not happening. Licensed DIVX DVD players are all over the place from a number of name manufacturers (Sony might even have one by now?), and while the codec is most often used for illegit purposes, you can say that about every codec.

Maybe because nobody cares about DivX ? The De Facto standard is the H.264 and I can't even remember the last I watched to a DivX video.

Yeah I can't wait until the PS3 UI actually starts looking more and more like the UI at all the game shows in the past. But I'm content with everything they've given us so far, especially 1.8.

I wonder why they didn't include all the features he presented that day to begin with... I mean the system came out 9 months after the 2006 GDC. If they had the features coded in then...why not in the final product?

I wish I knew.

That's a big difference. Features like this need to be tested heavily. Just because Sony has it running on a devkit somewhere doesn't mean its anywhere near stable/secure enough for public release.

But i'm talking about a different background image for the notifications.

i'd like it if the notifications didn't impair gameplay, for sure. but i guess that's why you gotta keep your buddy list to a minimum or fill it with people who dont sign on/off a lot.

you know, I'd laugh and say there is no way Sony or MS would build in Divx support. But then Sony do DVD players that play Divx, so it isn't that far fetched. It'd certainly win them some friends.

Although I'm not sure whether DNLA supports that as an extended codec?

Saying that nobody cares about DivX is like saying nobody cares about MP3. Let's be realistic, native divx / xvid support would be a pretty big perk.

Man, you should see what happens if someone comes online when you're playing Project 8...

I think we will end up seeing it. Initially, companies probably shied away from it because there really wasn’t all that much ‘legal’ content available for it. It was predominately movies and TV shows.

Now that more legal content providers are using it, the picture is a bit different.

Let's not forget that there's also some strategic advantage to staggering firmware releases like this. Should security ever be compromised, it gives them some new options that people will have to dload a firmware update for. Now, so long as it's not a friggin sieve like the PSP's firmware (Dark_Alex cracks 'em very fast) then it gives them an opportunity to patch holes. I'm not certain that's what they're doing right now, but I could certainly envision this being the case. PEACE.

Argh ... good point.

http://www.dlna.org/en/consumer/learn/technology/

If you look at the optional set, MPEG-4* is listed ... but of course, the * isn't defined on the bottom of the page :\

To my knowledge however, MPEG-4 level 2 is the decoder type for divx and xvid ... and MPEG-4 level 10 is AVC. These are the two most commonly used MPEG-4 variants ... and if you like at the optional set I linked, AVC is listed separately.

Given that MPEG-4 level 2 is the most popular form of MPEG-4 besides AVC, I would hope that it is what the * refers to in the optional set.

5/25/07 episode of 1UP Yours ~1:41:00 give or take 30 seconds.

And the quote, specifically, was:

"And 2.0 firmware's like soon apparently, so, and that's the one where XMB over a game, um, like no, no two different states, it's gonna be more like the Live blade."

because apple said so ??

No, because the movie industry, cable and satellite industry, IPTV, DNLA, etc. are all using it.

http://www.dlna.org/en/consumer/learn/roadmap/

If you notice, the next mandatory codec for DNLA is AVC. The only other mandatory codec is MPEG2.

BTW - I'm sure MS is not very happy that most telecons are going with AVC instead of Windows Media 9 / VC-1.

It will be interesting if that has any effect on HD-DVD using VC-1 as their primary codec. Obviously it is easier to compress an AVC file for broadcast rather than transcoding it from VC-1 and then comrpessing it.

So yeah, just for idle speculation and fun - now that we've got 1.8 and the 2.0 details posted are looking pretty likely - what else is there to add to the PS3 firmware?

Right now all i can think of, apart from more emulation fixes and improvements (no more upscaled psx fmv skipping plz), is more codec support, a better store, and the P2P stuff that will apparently be arriving with Home.

Vsync option for BC games.

just give me a ****in wallpaper option. How hard can it be?!?!?!?!

Seriously, the PS3 at this point should be doing ANIMATED WALLPAPERS...and it doesnt even have a regular wallpaper feature. Assinine.

Oh come on.

I don't need people to put more crap on the list, stuff that can possibly get in the way of my XMB in-game text-messaging.

Maybe they're saving it for an otherwise lack-luster update so at least there'll be something interesting to install.

how long will it take before sony runs out of ideas to add to firmware updates..

If the PS3 is going to be supported for the next 10 years as i believe sony has said...There only so many things that can be added.

As it stands now...we get atleast 1 firmware update per month...so 12 updates year..and so on..

That's in the 2.0 list already. We're talking about stuff not on the list.

Here's another: XMB chat support expanded to 9-10 users
