Why do you need this with the advent of DLNA streaming? I can stream any codec and any video (even ones from iTunes) to my PS3 now, I have practically no need for more codec supportOni Jazar said:* Support for more video/audio codecs

Grey boxes are not very pleasing or high-tech looking.

Onix said:While that is true, you can't do things like FF and RW, etc. for transcoded files. I don't see a reason to go nuts and add everything that's out there, but it would be good to add some of the more commonly used ones on the internet ... divx, etc.

I wish I knew.
CamHostage said:I am surprised that even now, none of the systems play DIVX. The DIVX company has been in negociations with game companies for a while now, I know that even Cube had it as a ported format (for professional video compression in-game only, no user playback of course), and there was a unlicensed 2nd Party player for PS2. But no PS3 or PSP support (and it'd be such an easy thing to add there too, just have a downloadable DIVX Player on the store if you can't work it into the firmware codecs), no 360 support (but the 360's such a wuss video player since MS won't allow vids to run, except if you can get a WMP network and then it's awesome), and no Wii support (J-MPEG? Thanks...) I hope that the talks are still on and that somebody gets a license on soon, because I really like my home DIVX player and would enjoy having one elsewhere in the house as well.
It seems about time, I don't know why it's not happening. Licensed DIVX DVD players are all over the place from a number of name manufacturers (Sony might even have one by now?), and while the codec is most often used for illegit purposes, you can say that about every codec.
Saying that nobody cares about DivX is like saying nobody cares about MP3. Let's be realistic, native divx / xvid support would be a pretty big perk.bluheim said:Maybe because nobody cares about DivX ?

Let's not forget that there's also some strategic advantage to staggering firmware releases like this. Should security ever be compromised, it gives them some new options that people will have to dload a firmware update for. Now, so long as it's not a friggin sieve like the PSP's firmware (Dark_Alex cracks 'em very fast) then it gives them an opportunity to patch holes. I'm not certain that's what they're doing right now, but I could certainly envision this being the case. I hate you.badcrumble said:So yeah, just for idle speculation and fun - now that we've got 1.8 and the 2.0 details posted are looking pretty likely - what else is there to add to the PS3 firmware?
Right now all i can think of, apart from more emulation fixes and improvements (no more upscaled psx fmv skipping plz), is more codec support, a better store, and the P2P stuff that will apparently be arriving with Home.

Seriously, the PS3 at this point should be doing ANIMATED WALLPAPERS...and it doesnt even have a regular wallpaper feature. Assinine.
