GOOD NEWS!!!! (if you think over priced bullshit selling is good news)

From PSU.com

It's the Holiday season and it's the time for giving, yet it seems most people are shopping for themselves from the comfort of their own Home. With Sony's extremely anticipated social networking application being released to the public, it saw the release of a ton of paid for content for your virtual self to try on and impress the "ladies" of PlayStation Home. While the pricing on some of these items have been astronomically overpriced (Think Santa Suit for $10), gamers are surprisingly eating all of these items up like they're on life support.

According to Susan Panico, Senior Director of PlayStation Network, Home brought in more cash in its first four days than the entire video store did in its first week. This number is not only astonishing, but partly sad as well. With the purchase of some of these items, gamers are giving Sony the thumbs up in providing more content that costs $10 per "virtual outfit."

Considering how many of you have complained during weekly updates about measly add-on content prices, it's shocking to see the support for these add-on clothing prices almost welcomed by all.

When discussing this rush of sales, Panico contributes its success to "a classic 80/20 model, where 20 percent of your customers create 80 percent of your income."

Well looks like this pricing shit is here to stay, and we can expect home to continue to suck while sony wracks in off of stupid people who buy stupid shit!

Man they are making mad money off of HOME already!!! That's crazy, because everyone here is complaining so much.

This is some sad shit! :(

And there I am I balking at $1.99 outfits for LBP. I want to know who the fuck buys these outfits. Clearly Bethesda were onto something with their horse armour pack.

Interesting, after seeing most of the blogs and news outlets poo-poo Home, I wonder if they'll even bother reporting that despite it's "blandness", Home is actually turning out to be a financial success. I'm very happy to hear this news and hope that Home continues to generate money for Sony, which will hopefully mean better and more games (more RPGs please).

Sony has not fixed the disconnections at all. Me and ppl on my friends list all got booted yesterday and and just now with those stupid errors.
i've never been disconnected *shrug*

While Home is Beta and they're working on sorting out technical issues, I'm sure a lot of Sony execs are hitting F5 on their Excel spreadsheets checking if Home is profitable.

If Home really is making them good money, they'll invest more into it and we'll some more content and features quicker.

It's really an experiment, both from a technical and business perspective.

It's probably so bare bones right now because they don't want to sink any more money into it without proof that it'll generate profits.

I bought a Samurai Sort rack and will probably get a cactus. I don't plan on going into HOME to buy things, but when my wallet has a dollar left over in my wallet from buying a PSN game or whatnot, and I happen to be in Home, why not.

is there a way to hang that damn thing on the wall?

wish the changing room was already implemented -- i'm not going to pay money for clothes that i can't try on first.

anyone have screenshot of the 'smart trousers' or 'business suit trousers'?

So, there was a contest on the Home message boards that is in line with the 12 days of Christmas event.
It was a riddle which im too lazy to type but basically, it was solved in about 2 minutes after it being announced. So that means we all missed out on 10 dollars worth of credit in home, which since is tied into the PS Store could probably be used on other things.

Just a heads up to the rest of gaf so somebody from here may end up getting another one of the riddles/questions out of the 9 days left.

Europe Home is such a damn joke! I mean even the JP Home have a Christman theme right now in their square. And it's snowing!

Visited US Home yesterday, the Theater is showing the first 10 minutes of the Resident Evil Degeneration CG flick. It stops shortly after the movie kicking into gear. I would love to see this done for other movies.

They should do a different movie every night at a certain time.

what possible benefit is there to having the different Home regions be so different...? i mean, i can understand different aesthetics, but the fact that japan Home has Disgaea 3 and other game clothes/apartment items, but then doesn't have all the generic clothes the US Home has is just silly. I'd buy a Prinny for my Home space, but i'm not going to buy one that will be stuck in jpn Home.

But like, why does japan get Darts but not america...? i play darts in bars all the time here -- we should have darts. japan's mall has no game apparently (we have chess). i hope they're at least working on something now (Go would be great) -- otherwise, they should put chess in there anyway.

i also wish america Home had the cafe space. i'm watching a dissidia interview now and something like this for american Home would be kickass.

i'm also dissapointed they removed voice chat in public spaces, as i was considering logging into jpn Home to practice japanese (it's my minor, but i feel like i don't get enough conversation practice). are there any clubs that would benefit this? a gaijin club or something?

with Home's reported success, i'm hopeful they'll put more people on the project and we'll see rapid updates in content and features. doubt it'll ever happen, but it'd be kickass if they let you "travel" to different Home regions with the same PSN ID. maybe charge a one time passport fee to reduce the chance of organized trolling in other regions. i'm so sick of the regional exclusivity and isolation in PSN and the game industry in general. ffxi had it SO right having servers be worldwide.

The difference is some people are willing for pay for the Home items and enjoy them.

Just throwing up some random and meaningless microtransaction doesn't mean it's a bad thing altogether.

I agree with Wollan though. Better movies and presentation style is always welcomed !

There are hardly any items to buy, though. Part of what would appeal to me is the ability to build a unique environment/character with your selection of purchases but the amount of options at this time is so small that you'd still end up as the 10th twinkie in the box.

I've put aside rampant consumerism in real life, don't see much point in taking it up again in virtual life, using real dollars.

got the ps3 chat pad :)

this thing is awesome. looks funny but performs well -- not any harder to use than my 360 chatpad. i wonder how the touch pad feature works... you can hover over it and it will still detect it, similar to wacom tablets but with your finger -- maybe thermal. amyway, this will make home more enjoyable.

Sitting in front of people's crotches (especially when it's Santa) while using the agree emote is funny as hell.

It's a sight to behold.

You're just siting there waiting to bowl an BAM! Santa is giving you a blowjob.

Disagreeing works well in the same situation, as does chatting with "Mmmfph mmfph mmmmfph".

...

Part of it is licensing. Like the PS1 games on PSN, publishers need to give permission individually for each region. Also advertising and marketing materials may be different in different areas and they dont want to step on each other's toes.

So that may be why the game specific items may appear in one place but not another.

I agree on overall features like darts and the cafe, but I can see why game specific stuff is differnt.

saw some interesting ideas on Home. I thought the theater was cool, along with the rest of the video screens. it's a very unique thing.

then I saw them asking for me to pay for clothing...and I lol'd.

it has potential. but I will not be engaging Home unless I have very specific reasons in the future. it was not something I'd want to do again. seems like a very obtuse way to game.

The point is that its not just for gaming. Its also for socializing with friends. And checking out new games, trailers...

People see it too much as "I want to play a game right now, how is Home going to help me" rather than "I enjoy games, how is Home going to help me".

At least that's the feeling I am getting from a lot of people.

nah man. we understand all that. it's just that it's poorly implemented, awkward, obtuse and wholly unnecessary in its current iteration. what it NEEDS is exactly what you seem to care less about: FAST, EASY INTEGRATION INTO GAMING EXPERIENCES.

I presume it'll get those things. So we'll see how it feels when it has those critical elements. right now it's just empty and doesn't show enough vision and implementation after 2 years of development to warrant Sony's money. maybe how it is right now--were it to stay on its current trajectory--is good enough for you. but it won't be for the masses. the "new car smell" will wear off soon. hopefully, there will be some real substance to make it valuable.

but let's not pretend it's there now. and lets not apologize for its obvious weaknesses. let's instead hope for more and better. and fast.

I fully agree.

I also hope it will be there, and also expect it to be there. But what I meant is that I dont want that to be the only benchmark either. I don't want people to say, stop adding more minigames, or game spaces, or furniture or clothes, and focus only on game launching. I think it can and will expand in all directions. Its just a matter of how fast.

Even game launching would be great, but I think more minigames and gamespaces with unlockable free items also would be cool.

I personally miss the 3D Trophies museums and shareable videos. I think the loading bar between spaces are a bit annoying, too long.

It isn't empty here. I see like 40 or 50 people in every public place.

The last update fixed the connection and lag issues I had in the public beta. Now it works perfectly like in the closed beta.

Yeah. They should have fucking seen this coming from a mile away. They need to make multiple copies of each room.

They do. You don't think there's one bowling alley for all of Home do you?

It's 32 people max per "instance".

They just need to add more lanes.

If the games use up server resources, I can see why Sony wants to "trottle" access to them. Also have you requested to join an existing bowling game ?

I think at this point, Sony needs to start building some structures into the user base.

* Encourage and reward community behaviour. Those prizes for the Christmas trivia should go to successful Home Club owners.

* Encourate and reward good customers. Allowing them better access to the Home mini-games or exclusive Home items for example.

At the same time, the engineering team should work feverishly on game launching and a streamlined 2D UI for utility minded folks. The 2D UI layer should overlay on top of the 3D world asynchronously so that performance is not affected and they can instantiate there whenever they want to.

They can just charge for bowling like in a real bowling alley.

They need some better clothes in the us store. A killzone outfit would sell like crazy.

Seriously? How long has that been in place? There's no way to access each individual version of it. And I've never had trouble finding a person based on their location.

Hehe, always!
If not, there'd be thousands of people in the central plaza alone!

It usually tries to send you the instance that people you know are on.
So if I see a friend in the mall, and I go there, more than likely, I'll get sent to his mall (unless it's full at the moment).

Not having enough games/alleys for everybody in a room is quite deliberate I'm sure (especially for arcade games). Sony didn't dump all that money into Home so people could play crappy free games, Home is there for people to socialize and find new friends to play real multiplayer games with. The free games are there as an attraction, to force people to interact with each other so they can play. For crying out loud, one of the arcade games is called "Ice Breaker".

Even the more anti-social gamers who just want to play the breakout clone are stuck standing near the arcade units, near other online-recluses doing the same. Sooner or later, a conversation is likely to break out, even if just to complain about the lack of sufficient arcade units. It's one of the few design aspects of Home that I'm impressed with.

And as for things I'm not impressed with, I can't believe the facial hair icon in character setup has a mustache AND beard (commonly referred to as a goatee, but more correctly a Van Dyck), but STILL does not have a Van Dyck as an option! You can have a mustache straight from a 70's kung fu movie, you can (finally) have a beard, but god forbid you have both. argh.

You know Home is awesome when you want to change your clothes, but you end up losing your feet, hands, and legs; a walking torso. At least you can freak people out with it, and saying "What has science done to me!?" is always good for a chuckle.
