PS3 rumours surrounding the BR drive

lol, yeah I can't see them drop full backwards compatibility just to get the system out a few months early.

That doesn't sound likely at all...but I have no information on this, so I couldn't really say.

Also someone over there mentioned a reason this would be impossible. Do you really think all games are going to be on Blu-Ray discs? The majority of early titles would still be released on dvd since they would be under 8/9 gigs. You can't have systems that won't play them.

Not after all the talk of BC.

Goes in the same category as:
PS3 dropping router (?) functions
PSPs screen magically downgraded

IMO of course. :)

Thats not a reason its impossible. Sony would just require all games to come on bluray.

TBH, the reason its unlikely is BC. It would be dumb of them to tout BC, engineer the machine to play PSone and PStwo games, then lose out just cause of the drive?

And anyway, aren't there already dual layer bluray machines available in Japan?

Not gonna happen. Due to the initial high manufacturing costs of Blu-ray discs, most early games have to be on DVD-ROM.

Not to mention losing DVD-Video support.

Wasn't that confirmed?

Sony never mentioned any such functions at E3.
Kutaragi said in an later interview that they had looked into for the console to have such functions, but they took it out before the final specs.

The articles posted on the internet made it sound as if these functions were promised at E3, which they weren’t.

Alright thanks, missed that one.

There's no need for them to do that and rush the Japanese launch. It's not like 360 can beat them there no matter when they launch, I don't see them feeling so threatened that they feel obligated to meet that date. They're still saying they're going to meet that date just to get people to wait on the 360. Doing something that stupid would be more detrimental to them than a delay.

I remember in 1999 ( or late 1998 ) some sources claimed that PS2 will not be compatible with DVD and the confirmation came from some developers.

and now in 2005, PS3 will not read DVD & CD ( so No BC ) just to catch up the spring release date ? excuse me ? hellooo... Sony’s isn’t that dumb to sacrifice the most important feature for many gamers... so I don’t believe this * leaked * info.

When the PS2 was released alot of the JPN gamers bought it just to movies on it. I can't see why Sony would release the PS3 without dvd support.

In order to meet launch in spring the ps3 will feature a drive that will only be able to read single layer BD disks and will not be compatible with DVD and CDROM's

You are not realizing that such system would not even be able to play CD-Audio and DVD-video discs... it goes MUCH beyond backward-compatibility with PSOne and PSTwo games.

I doubt that all the companies in the BDA group would still be so happily pushing PLAYSTATION 3 when it broke even the promises the BDA group pushed forward, i.e. compatibility with DVD movies in all BD-ROM players.

Just to entertain this, even though I don't believe it for a second, if this were true that would automatically put PS3 on the backburner for me. I'd just pick it up at the end of next-gen if true.

this is for japanese launch though.

Blu-ray drives might not be fully ready yet, or the process sucks so much right now that it's expensive making dual layer compatibility / as well as DVD and CD reading... who knows

But usually when sony launches there's ample time between their launches giving time for the technology to be more complete when it reaches american soil.

nope, never, fanciful in the extreme. They'd have to swap all those drives out when the full version ones come out.

They'd delay before they did this.

So they ship a MEGA broken product to the customers in Japan creating a HUGE disastrous PR backlash worldwide meanwhile eroding their support in Japan ?!?

Japanese consumers have a good memory when it comes to company screwing with them too much, go ask Mitsubishi Motors ;).

you forget that some USB ports on PS3 project was dropped too
the are aiming tu cut cost where they can

This smells like some retarded attempt from a viral marketer to soften the blow for X360's fucked BC rather than legit info about PS3.

Well, if you think in those terms and were in the mood of extreeme PS3 damage control, such news would promptly make you pre-order that puppy I guess ;), right ?

Well, you know Sony's going to do something to piss people off. Every company does it around launch time. Dropped features, lowered shipments, delayed games.

I had heard rumblings they were having difficulty getting a BR drive to read DVDs. Seems a bit unlikely they would launch without sorting it out though, it's not like they're in a hurry.

Wanting to launch in Spring without showing a single playable so far sounds like a hurry to me. Especially for Japan, where they could theoretically outsell the Xbox 360's 9 month sales in a week.

If the BRD won't read DVDs/CDs, they'll have to launch with a dual laser product.

If this rumor is true, Sony would have the least features on their new console compared to the competition. Why would Sony do that, when they don't have to rush?

They consider Nintendo to be a role model?

That's funny... combo units (units capable of reading and writing CD/DVD and Blu Ray) have already been demo'd.

Er, I thought the screen was downgraded from the earliest press units? Hence all the ghosting?

The real downgrade will be when the grill and boomerang hunting functions are taken out.

You can neither kill nor cook that dingo now, mate.

Theres really not much in the way of features they "can" cut now without seriously affecting the functionality of the system. I mean they could cut out the inbuilt wireless controller support and maybe lower the specs a little but not much else.
