PS3 will invariably have a poor launch line up

did people really think the US PS2 launch was bad?

-Tekken Tag
-RRV
-Madden 2001
-SSX
-Fantavision
-fucking Swing Away Golf- i.e. GOTY '01
-TimeSplitters
-Smuggler's Run
-Kessen
-DOA2
-Dynasty Warriors (well, if you follow MS' philosophy of 'laugh window')

Damn... I had a blast with those games within the first two or three weeks of PS2's release. It was probably the most fun I'd had, collectively, since SNES' first US Christmas in 1991. @_@

I played the shit out of the 'Capture the Bag' game. Even though it was easy and the enemy AI was hilariously bad, I'd still play that thing for hours. :D
I remember being pretty impressed by the model physics back then.

The PS2 launch was nowhere near as bad as some make it out to be. The bad part of early on in the PS2 was the short time after the long which was really slow and then it picked up mid 2001 and hasn't let up since.

The PS2 launch was crap. The few decent titles available got really old after 2 weeks tops and you were left waiting as long has march for something decent to come out in the form of onimusha and the bouncer. Both of which wound up sucking a fat wang. Then ZOE came out with its MGS2 demo and almost made the thing worth the plastic it was made of. Really though you had to wait until just about th end of 2001 for decent stuff to find its way out the door like Devil may cry 1, silent hill 2 and FFX. MGS2 as well I guess, it was eagerly anticipated even if it woundup being total garbage in the end.

The Xbox fell prey to this a little bit also, I mean the only game really worth owning was halo up until ninja gaiden and halo 2's release. I liked the DOA games as well and most people could pick out a few games t make the system worth owning, such as rallisport 2.

So yeah, the PS3 probally will have a shitty launch lineup if only becuase basically every console in the past set a precident for it.

I thought the PS2 launch was fine. Had a blast with SSX and Tekken Tag, they were truely next gen to me at the time, as I hadn't really played too many Dreamcast games up until then.

The launch will be better than the 360's only because development for 360 will have a stronger foundation, there will be more games in the 360 library so the PS3's lineup will be primarily crossports of 360 games. Almost exactly like many 360 games being cross ports of PS2, Xbox, and PC games.

The Ps2 launch itself was quite bad if I remember correctly... the only thing that really wowed me. Was... SSX and Tekken Tag... otherwise it was all mediocre or crap... everything else released had a counterpart that was looking pretty damn good on the current rival system... the PS2 didnt really pick up gaming wise till 2 or 3 months after launch..

360's launch is quite nice if you actually go to a store and see how many titles are available... I was like holy poopysex.

Fifa 06
Amped 3

KingKong
PGR
Perfect Dark
Kameo
Call of Duty
Need for speed Most wanted
Ridge Racer 6

I may have missed a few but that looks like a pretty damn solid launch... Almost as solid as the Dreamcast launch. (Dreamcast had more gems)

I still think every launch ever was shitty.

But if the hypothetically shitty PS3 and Rev launches don't at least have Warhawk and Mario PLATFORMER respectively, they're getting waited on too. Yeah, the waiting game. Price drops for all. In my hypothetical future.

And the only truly great title on that list is SSX.

Also, how could a PS2 launch game be GOTY '01?

Can't wait to be called a sonybot when I defend that system/launch against the idiots.

Just like I did for the PSP and the 360. :D

I'm pretty sure you won't be defending it, since PS3 launch is going to be horrible.

Hey guys, don't burn me at the stake. After hearing this news, I can't help but be disappointed. PS3 is just another in a long line of horrible launch lineups. What that launch lineup is, I can't say, except it's shitty. So no one will defend it.

Whatever about quality, I am reasonably confident that the PS3's US launch lineup will be the largest ever, if it arrives in the Fall.

From a quality perspective, I think at least a few of what might be considered the "early" titles could be standouts - for me, I'm quite hopeful for Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, Eyedentify & I-8, off the top of my head, and they seem like possible 06 candidates. I expect more exclusively next-gen content from the likes of EA/Activision/Ubi etc. too - throw in one of next-gen MoH/BIA perhaps, UT2007 maybe etc. etc.?

Technically, I certainly don't expect rushed titles, again for a Fall US launch. Assuming a Nov 06 launch, that'd give devs of western launch titles almost a year with final hardware, and up to 18 months or more with "beta" hardware.

so where's the proof that ps3's launch will suck? besides "ps2's launch sucked so ps3's will too" :lol

i don't see why you need any more proof than that

Jolly: no, it sucked too

Ridge Racer has always made Playstation worth it at launch.. wether it's PS1,PS2 or PSP. If PS3 dont get RR game it will at least make it easier for me to wait for a price drop.

I would have to say It's fair, I have my 360 and PDZ ang PRG3 on preorder, but besides maybe 4 or 5 games, The rest seem to be XBOX and PS2 ports which from most of the reviews I've read are only marginally better.

I agree. Sony's track record of crappy launch titles will repeat itself next year.

Yep because their 20+ games that they had at launch for the PSP which took EU by storm did suck.

?!?!?! Does that mean My Bouncer PS3 Remake petition is doomed?!?!?! it must be a launch game or NO SALE SONY

edit: Wasn't Bouncer a ps2 launch game? I remember it being the first game my dumb-ass roomate bought after gettingthe system with tekken

Damn that's a chance i clicked on this thread, it gave me some serious reality check and now i'm really aware about how the PS3 launch will be.

***orders a 360*** :lol

PS3 will probably have a good launch line up followed up by nothing that special for the next 9 months after launch.....

Year 2 and 3 of PLAYSTATION 3 is when things will *really* pick up though.....PlayStation products always start out slow, gamewise, and then get big sales boosts from great 2nd and 3rd generation games...

It happened to the PS1 and PS2....it is happing to the PSP now and it will happen to PS3...

I expect 2007 will be the first knockout year for PS3 games :)

As far as the PS2 goes it was awful, i guess the saving grace was that the machine was also a DVD player which was extremely expensive at the time.

Tekken Tag was awesome, some stuff in TimeSpliters was good, SSX etc. It wasn't a bad launch.

True. Probably best to wait until 2007 to buy a PS3. Get a pricedrop (hopefully) and second generation games!

End of 2006 should be all about second generation 360 games.

come on namco, PLEASE SHOW US SOMETHING from the ps3 tekken, even if its just character select. this wait is getting horrible. :(

But will the fact that it will be one of the first (if not the only) sub $400 HD movie players be its saving grace?
No, because it's first and foremost a gaming console, if it does not have games it has no need to exist. Sony would save themselves a lot of money by putting out standalone Blu Ray players instead (assuming your scenario of the PS3 being worthless for games potential was actually true.)

People said that all the PS2 would end up being good for is DVD playback after the XBox came along because of hardware woes and what have you. Untrue.

I'm looking at the PS2 launches (Japan and US) which were pretty sparse but the DVD playback was a big feature which got mentioned a lot in the press as a reason to buy.
Back then, not many people had DVD players (I was among them) - so it was worth mentioning from a marketing standpoint. The XBox has DVD playback too, but you have to actually buy a playback package to make it work... but at the end of the day they can both be used as DVD players. It's just that the PS2 did it out of the box.

Blu Ray is cool, and I'll probably buy a movie or two, but I'm not gonna go crazy over it. I'm not too thrilled with the extremely paranoid, privacy invasive copyprotection it's said to have, and furthermore VHS -> DVD > DVD -> Blu Ray. It's not as exciting. Just expect digital video at a higher bitrate and resolution. It'll look damn nice, but again, a lot more familiar.

Now looking at the X360 launch, there is nothing but the games to focus on (since DVD players are ubiquitous now) and there seems to be a mixed reaction in the press which I wasn't expecting for a next gen piece of hardware especially considering MS' marketing muscle.
Ooh wow. And with the PS3 launch there will be a lot of games too. You realize PS3 is at least a year away for a US and European market.

Are we going to be seeing more mentions of Blu-Ray than games when the PS3 launches? I'm beginning to think so.
No. Blu-Ray isn't going to take off like DVD did, not right away. It'll be a selling point, but not a major reason to buy the console IMO. And even if it is, so what? There's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
