"PS3 & Xbox360 in the Real World"

this is the true story of 3 systems, picked to live in a forum, and have their lives endlessly bickered about, to find out what happens when people stop being sensible, and start being fanboys. The Real World: GAF.

I'm so tired of all these articles and the armchair analysts. All the "oh PS2 is so hard to program for, developers hate it" comments turned out to mean shit this generation and anyone trying to predict anything about next generation is just jumping on the same bandwagon. I mean come on, does anyone even have complete hard final specs on whats in the PS3 or 360 yet and the capabilities of each? At this point those making a hard choice of one or the other is doing so on Favoritism or Hype.

Now that was a LONG read.

Now that I read it I know nothing more than I did before.

STOP THE POINTLESS NEXT GEN TALKING

So we've only been here a week, and '360 is already all up in my face about how I'm lying about Cell! I mean, what the <bleep>? And I hear that jackass is going after some of my asian hos. <Bleep>, I found that bastard in bed with *Square* last night! That bitch and me are gonna have WORDS.

360.jpg

PS3's totally overreacting. Square and I were both drunk. And to be honest, it didn't mean anything. Not that I wouldn't take things further if she'd just break up with that arrogant <bleep>. And it's not like I don't have my own problems, know what I'm sayin'? Tecmo was ALL OVER PS3 during the first night's party. Babe, it's not the size that matters! I know I told you different when we first met, but it's not the size of your disk, it's how you use it! Just ask my older brother, Gamecube!

You know, before taping - when we were all getting to know each other - everyone said they didn't have a problem experimenting. Well, that was total horse<bleep>, wasn't it?

(*partially inspired by that thingy on doublefine.com*)

you know about at the point he starts talking about tools and refers to visual studio failing. That's the dev environment, it's not a tool. =p

Because they were obviously BS.

The important thing to know about console developement is virtually no one with any real world console development experience posts on the Net. And if if they do post, it is most likely on more general console market topics. Console engineers have gotten fired for posting on the Net - I've seen it happen to someone personally a few years ago. Posting concrete hardware or development info on the Net is something that can get your dev house in serious trouble with the console makers.

With the unfortunate entry of Microsoft into the console world a whole class of people are commenting on topics they have absolutely no competence in. These new people fall into two categories, peecee game developers and casual peecee graphics programmers. What you can and can't talk about at peecee dev houses is significantly more lax that console dev houses. So you end up with a massive influx of people who's entire life revolves around DirectX and Visual Studio and big fat expensive x86 video cards suddenly confronted with and dealing with hardware designed to be the most efficient to manufacture in both cost and performance. Both cost and performance.

That influx of peecee game developers however is dwarfed by the masses of casual x86 programmers and gamers who don't work for peecee game companies but their info solely comes from that world. Beyond3d,anandtech,arstechica,nvidia's developer site, statements from peecee developes like John Carmack and others.

I can think of only three or four posters on the Net over the past five years that were actual console developers who had a clue what real world console development was like. Every article that has been written about console tech in recent years is completely worthless. Anyone that would have the knowledge to write a useful summary or description of console hardware and development is not going to be in a position where they can openly share their knowledge.

It seems like he doesn't like either system all that much to me. Especially bandwidth constraints and lack of cache.

I enjoyed that comment about in a given case both CPUs could be less powerful than Dreamcast's :lol
