PS4 Hardware Troubleshooting / Q&A Thread

Only good thing about the rest of the world waiting is finding out all these problems and see how severe things are. As far as I can tell its the hdmi cable that comes in the box causing problems

I got to safe mode, but don't know what to do from there. Do I need to call Sony?

Have you updated yet? If not, do that. Are you getting any picture in safe mode? If not, try a different port or cable. If even that doesn't work, check to see if you have the metal in the HDMI port Kotaku issue. If that isn't true, take the hard drive out, boot it without the HDD, put the HDD back in and boot it back up again.

I don't understand how a HDMI not showing video makes my console end up getting the blue light of death. It's so fucking stupid.

I've spent all day on the phone waiting for Sony support. Console is completely dead and have to send it in. Amazon it's trying their best to find me a replacement to avoid the month wait.

Just got one earlier today from BB. :)
Don't really understand the complaints about the wobble. The system is sturdy to me and the feet looks to be designed that way on purpose; it is 100% flat if you don't press on it.
Love the physical design of the system.

It's not. They're unrelated issues, trust me. They just happened at the same time and make it look like they're related. Your system failed inside. We don't know what.

Not really tons there...that link has 22 posts and most are about amazon refund policies.

I wanted to have a thread where people could report issues and get help with problems...not argue over failure rates and such. Nobody knows the latter so let's just try and see what we can find out.

I posted a 1 star review, but I didn't mention Amazon at all. I don't blame them, Sony just send them a bad batch of console. I'll probably update my review once I can actually get a system that works.

Is there a special way to get the second screen stuff to work on ac4? My vita just keeps saying"this screen is not in use"

Remote play works though

This wasn't the case for me. I actually used my old PS3 HDMI cable the first time I tried to boot the system because I had read that the PS4 one might have issues.

How to connect remote play via wifi, not the direct connection? I can't reach the bedroom via direct without losing signal, so I need to run through the router. Can I force it to use wifi?

So if I have everything set up correctly by the manual standards and it is pulsating blue with no picture it is faulty inside? I tried the HDMI cable it came with and a different one I own that I know works and still no picture.

Moving the ps4 around. I hear something moving in the section with the disc. Is this normal? Sounds like something shifts back and forth when I tilt.

I just got the PS4 it bricked with the update installed while playing Madden. It cut off and was just the blue pulsing light. My brother got this fix for me from from the user comment section on this http://www.ign.com/wikis/playstation-4/PS4_Blue_Light_Problem IGN article. It worked great and I am back playing. I will post it below if it's ok if not I will delete.

1. Hold down power button until the unit powers off and the light goes out. This took about 10 seconds.
2. Enter Safe Mode by holding down the power button until you hear 2 beeps. Release power button after the second beep. The Safe Mode menu will appear with a list of options.
3. Select Option 4 to restore PS4 to factory defaults. Once it's done, the system will restart.
4. In our case, after the reboot, the PS4 automatically entered Safe Mode. This time, they had us select Option 6 to Initialize the PS4. Note that by doing this, you will lose profiles and settings so just be aware that you are basically starting over. Once it's done, the system will restart.
5. When the PS4 comes back up, it will take you through the initial setup again as if it's being booted for the first time.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! Was freaking out that nothing was outputting and this worked.

So the facts as of now:

- If you have a pulsating blue light and no signal = Possible Dead PS4

What to do?
Try to get to safe mode and update from USB, if you can't get into safe mode, then you have a dead PS4.

-If you have a pulsating blue light, then white light but no signal = HDMI issue

What to do?
Try a different cable or port in your TV.

That's what I can gather from this thread.

What trouble are you having? I'm using optical out and dolby with no issues.

After a while the audio just gets turned into scrambled garbage. Only way to reset it back to normal is fiddle with the settings. I think my receiver might just be too old for some of this stuff but not sure since others had a similar issue.

I usually just use the TV speakers but since this was a new console I wanted to blast my surround sound.

Got my console today after work and everything booted up and is running fine. Reading this thread scared the crap out of me on my lunch break. Anyway, the resolution setting is set to 1080p and i'm using the same hdmi cable i used for my ps3, but i find that the font in the UI menu, game menu, and psn id avatar are a little low res/pixely?

I was at the part of the setup where you enable sharing video watches / trophies with friends or not, I clicked OK and now it is stuck at "please wait". I tried going back but it doesn't work. . . Should I just restart it manuallY?

I held down the PS button and did a manual shutdown, it's just the network experiencing issues.

Someone else had this problem and updating their tv firmware fixed it.

If it beeps and shuts down or gets a red light, listen to see if the fan is actually working or not.

No fan = not 'bricked' but will only run for a minute or two

HELP. My PS4 has been in the preparing to install state for 1.5 for a few minutes now and hasn't started, is this normal? Also, the light on my PS4 has been white this entire time?

Help me, Gaf. I'm getting scared.

Well, count me among the frustrated. Everything was working fine, I successfully updated to 1.5, logged into PSN, jumped in/out of a bunch of streams, and then I decided to download Resogun.

It started to download then the screen flickered to black and after 3 minutes it came back completely frozen. I let it sit there for 10minutes waiting for something to happen. Power button did nothing so I had to unplug it from the back.

It boots back up, finishes the safe mode check, but as soon as it asks me to "press the PS button", it flickers to black and thats it.

I don't really know what the issue is and I'm not about to comb the internet or sit through hours of phones calls to figure it out. Just gonna get my money back.

I had mine freeze-up when I tried to launch Warframe, I just held the power button until it rebooted. :

I tried and ended up unplugging the AC adapter. Had it happen twice.

All seems to be fine. I think it's more related to all these damn notifications I keep getting about PSN maintenance.

I just ended up signing out of PSN for the night. Too annoying.

what firmware? Not sure, to be honest. Never even got a signal.
purchased from where? Amazon.
what is your A/V set up like? I tried two different setups, but both involved a direct HDMI connection between the TV and the console and the power plugged into a surge protector.
what resolution do you want to output in? Would have been 1080p.
were you able to get any video signal or none at all? None at all.
can you hear audio? No.

When I talked to Sony support, he asked me to hold down the power button until it beeped twice, presumably to get it to into safe mode. When it wouldn't beep twice, he immediately moved on to getting my address so that he could send the coffin.

Ok. Now the system finished installing, but the screen is flickering white. I'm assuming this is a HDMI problem, but I'm not using the cable that came in the box, I'm using the one I used for my PS3. Is there any way to fix this?

are you using a av receiver? mine did this and I had to turn my receiver off and back on. fixed the issue. must have got the HDMI handshake out of whack or something

Just researching the various sites on bricked PS4 consoles. Yes, its probably a firmware issue. I guess the one I got was already bricked...

Nope, the cord is going straight from the PS4 to the TV. I also looked into the HDMI port, and I couldn't see any pins out of shape. But I'm not really sure what I'm looking for, if that is even the problem.

Did anyone else get their e-mail are whatever from Sony customer support about when you're getting your box shipped? I'm worried I'm gonna have to call them back because the lady didn't write my email down correctly..

Pulsing blue means dead. Gotta send it in/return it/repair it.

Ugh. Just rushed out to Costco, Best Buy, and Gamestop to see if I can buy another one but nobody has any. Guess I'll try contacting Amazon or Sony and waiting for them to send me a new unit. There goes my plan of playing PS4 all weekend...

Hold up before you start pushing anything.

Isn't this what it's supposed to look like? I don't see either pin being raised higher than the other or are you talking about the thing in the middle? Because that isn't whats causing the problem according to most other posters.

That looks like a 100% normal HDMI port. Those prongs are so the cable stays in place.

Ok wasn't sure, it just looked a little weird to me. Sorta wish it was an HDMI issue cause at least then I'd have a chance of fixing it. My console was DOA and doesn't seem like there's anything I can do.

I didn't get an email from them (not yet, at least). Ultimately, I decided to return the console with Amazon after first deciding to go through Sony support.

Thought it was the port causing the issue with bit of metal sticking out? I'm using the included cable and it works fine.

Yeah I'm thinking they'll send the e-mails maybe Monday since today is Friday. It would be amazing if I got a new working system before the end of this month...Highly unlikely.

This sounds exactly like what happened to me, I'll give this a try from the start.

Yeah, we have a confirmed pattern. And, according to John Harker, Sony is aware of the issue. So now the question becomes...what is the issue...

Bricked PS4 owners post the location your PS4 was manufactured and the month. I want to see if we could pin this down to just a bad batch. You could find the information on the back.

I don't get it , where are the codes? Are they suppose to be that white place because they're are not there?

WTF

Nitpicky OCD complaint, but my status light gets slightly brighter on the dim edge, right before the edge of the console (near the PS logo). Pretty minor, but annoying.

Fortunately, it has been fully functional.

Try reseating the HDMI cable and make sure it is connected snuggly and securely. if not, remove the HDMI cable and look for a piece of metal obstructing the pins.

Unfortunately it sounds like I was one of the extra unlucky ones.

My PS4 was stuck on the blue pulsating light, and I couldn't get it to go into safe mode. Ah well, thankfully Amazon can give me a speedy refund.
